All respect to Matt. Dig his work in Soundgarden but I genuinely hate how he plays classic era PJ songs. Based on what I understand is that PJ wanted someone to play more in the style of The Ramones - basic, very straight forward (no disrespect to Richie). Dave Krusen's work on Ten was brilliant in the true sense of the word. Then Dave Abbruzzese took it to another level. He was the best drummer PJ ever had. He had the groove, funk, swing, character, dynamics, sexy cymbal work and power in spades. He was a ball of energy on stage. Both him and Krusen were very influential in my drumming.

I was in love with Matt Cameron’s solo album “Cavedweller” a few years ago, and someone told me he didn’t play drums on it and I was crestfallen. He DID play some tunes on the (forgotten?) magnum opus of the band Our Lady Peace from Y2K, “Spiritual Machines”. If you’ve never heard those records, go right now and do that.

Wow, obviously playing for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam is impressive, but somehow being asked to play on an OLP album is even more so. More than any other 90's alternative band, with the possible exceptions of RHCP and Blink 182, the drums were such a huge part of OLP's whole sound. I'd imagine they wouldnt take that choice lightly at all.

As much as I love Matt Cameron with Soundgarden, he is right about the energy factor. He doesn't have any when he plays with Pearl Jam. If you want energy, you get Dave Abbruzzese. He's just as old but has plenty of gas left. Make no mistake, Matt's style with Soundgarden is seamless. But after Vitalogy, PJ has never been the same. I still respect Matt heaps, but he is just not the right guy for the gig.

Actually, while I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, I've always thought that even before Cameron joined the band they tended to speed songs up. They are one of the most energetic rock bands out there, but at the same time, they sometimes ruin some songs for me when they do it live, for example "off he goes", but that just me. He's awesome though.

I think it's the band's choice to play like this. After seeing them play with Dave Krusen, when Matt had to leave the kit because of covid, even though he wasn't playing Even Flow at 120 BPM, like Matt, he was closer to 115 BPM instead of the 100 bpm on the official recording.
@arjunapartha
@arjunapartha Жыл бұрын
Allow me to clear this up; singers choose the tempo in discussion and rehearsal with their drummer, (inside rock n roll baseball) based on how difficult the vocals will be ; live, in what position of the set list, and recording or not, tv or not plus whether it’s a hit (they have to play it) or if the band hates (sick of) the song….all of this to say, when the drummer speeds it up, it becomes much easier to sing the full breath (or breadth) of said popular song.

Pearl Jam plays lots of their songs faster than original. That is a BIG luxury to have as a drummer. Worst case, you have to slow down to album speeds which is something people won't be complaining about compared to having to slow down way beyond studio records which is what you often see with aging Metal bands.

One thing that really seems to separate musicians with this level of success from the rest is intelligence. Hearing Matt talk you can imagine him as a very competent engineer. I don't think "dumb" guys can sustain this type of creative output, or do it with this level of sophistication. Not that you have to be Beethoven, but I would assume the average member of a "tier-one" rock band is much more intelligent and thoughtful than the average person.
