My old band used to open for his old band Martyr. Pat is honest to goodness a super amazing guy. Very chill and always wanting to talk drums. Still one of my favorite drummers of all time. Truly an amazing choice. The amount of incredible bands this guy has been in is astonishing. Obviously Gorguts but also Martyr and Cephalic Carnage. Technical marvels all. That being said you need to listen to Gorguts beyond the drumming. Pat deserves all the credit he gets for this video but a lot of people call Luc Lemay a musical genius and I wouldn't fight them. Miles beyond most metal

I love this album. I was only just starting to get into progressive extreme metal from ProgArchives highly rated albums and found Obscura by them, which was so meticulously dissonant throughout that I had to look up the band to see what they were up to. Turns out they hadn't released an album in 12 years. So I looked up Luc Lemay and... he was working on an album with a few other musicians that I'd come to enjoy. Colored Sands was definitely worth it.

ok, Pat actually not only switches to traditional grip, I think for some performances he even had two different bass drums, maybe even pedals, to get different tones and feels for the metal versus the more laid back styles in the songs... that is somewhat very over the top and unnecessary but shows the dedication to the music. probably same reason here: to have different dynamics and feel. Really necessary? No, but if that helps him somewhat in acheving what he wants to achieve musically, all the more power to him.

Regarding triggers. A lot of the bands do use triggers mainly on their bass drum. You could do a deep dive at some point with them. Triggers are to me like guitar pedals....just a way of changing the sound. They won't change when the beat happens. Quantizing, during editing is what would fix the off time hits that people get angry about.
@AndrewRooneyDrums
@AndrewRooneyDrums Жыл бұрын
Yes well said! I'm self confessed ignorant of triggers. And I worry anytime I bring them up it sounds like a diss
@TheTrveMothlord
@TheTrveMothlord Жыл бұрын
This is all very true EXCEPT that while the faster you get the softer you'll hit. There are drummers who do use triggers as a shortcut to getting louder sounding hits live when they actually haven't trained their legs to do most of the work in producing hard velocities. Not all of course but some do take the path of least resistance. On the other hand there are drummers who have worked hard but need the longevity when touring for long runs and to preserve their ability.

"Pat Hamelin" sounds like an actor to me. Of course, anything French tends to be pretentious beyond belief. I love his strokes (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID) My drum teacher taught me that left hand traditional grip some 50 plus years ago. Anymore I can do either grip, but I like you don't generally see the need for it. But some great ones use it such as Neil Peart. Good drummer but the music is god-awful. IMO.
