Dillinger Escape Plan was one of the hardest bands for me to come to listen to due to its chaotic nature. Yet, here I am, proud to have seen them live twice and find emotional attachment to several songs a couple years later. And just like this video clearly shows, they are super intricate and it's so much to be learned from each instrument when dissected. It can seem daunting and harrowing, but wooooh the reward down the line! Andrew! Not necessary for a reaction video, but I recommend you check out this song again with the studio version or even a live performance and just hearing the whole jam with the vocals too. It's a trip!

As someone who has been drumming for a few years I have been listening to extreme music for a while and had heard the name a bit back in the day. One day playing clone hero with my step brother and Panasonic youth came up on random. I was stunned. I didn't know what to make of it. Never heard ANYTHING like them before. instantly listened to everything they ever released. Did not like them much at first but liked the style and liked a few gems like Prancer, Farewell Mona Lisa, and more. Now I can just throw on their discography and know the words to any song that comes up and understand it musically somewhat...but I still notice little things in songs I never noticed before even after years of listening, and thats why I love them SO MUCH. Years later and they still sound unique, I find I need to take breaks from them though and listen to more normal stuff or everything that isnt Dillinger starts to sound plain and boring...

That was amazing. His dynamics, musicality and precision were all first rate. As a drummer and a pianist myself I appreciate the shout out to the importance of playing other instruments. Let's not forget that technically piano is a percussion instrument -- but with colour -- and its by being sensitive the tonal colours of sound, and not just the rhythmic elements, that we become better drummers

@@alexfreakdaxer927 I agree Option is an amazing record and my favourite by them. To be from the era it is, it is a little 90's sounding production wise. Totally agreed with the points made at the beginning there. Being somebody whose first instrument was and always will be drums/percussion, I'm eternally grateful that I decided to learn other instruments. Being able to interpret music in a pragmatic, mathematical sense helps a lot with composition. I primarily play guitar now, but I'm a solo musician and producer and my percussive compositions have definitely changed the more I've taken influence from elsewhere. Percussive counterpoint in composition really stands out when it's utilized effectively, and understanding how that works from a melodic standpoint is definitely something every drummer should strive to learn. My favourite mainstream example of really effective percussive counterpoint is Stewart Copeland from the Police, what an absolute unit of a drummer. TDEP is fantastic as well, had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in the late 2000s, awesome live group.

Firstly it's really hard to listen to their music as it is really fast and chaotic, time signatures are changing every 5 seconds, it's like a really fast paced and agressive jazz but that's the price you pay for getting into one of the most technically perfect bands in the world right now.

It's always funny having the uninitiated experienced musician hearing Dillinger. They almost always say "I can't even begin to describe this." Rymer is very good, and he does things a little differently than Chris Penne did. But Penne and Weinman developed the sound that is Dillinger Esc Plan, and Penne definitely leaned into jazz roots more. Both of them play on a somewhat minimal kit though, and make a lot of drummers look silly with their elaborate kits.

Andrew , I'm glad you enjoyed it, and finally got to check this out. The execution of his accents and assault of time changing ostinato sections are the heart of the way Dillinger writes their music. I recommend starting with their most recent release and working backwards, because they are a very hard band to explain but the music is very ... erm...harsh mixture of jazz and .....grindcore/hardcore/mathcore...ish? Nobody else sounds like them really. As a whole they are an extremely talented group of musicians. Billy was not always with them, another linear drummer with a similar style named Chris Pennie was their original drummer. The dynamics this dude gets out of a china cymbal......

Dillinger was an amazing bang, esp when you break down the music. People who don't know music call it noise...that's right when I know they don't know anything about music.

I always thought that if Yes had grown up listening to New York City Hardcore in 1980s Dillinger would have been the outcome. Still sad these guys split up.

Hello Andrew. Love your videos. What do you recommend for a bigger drummer? I'm looking to get a electric drum set, seeing as I live in a condo and I don't want my neighbors to kill me, lol.

Pennie,Sharone, and Rymer are all monster drummers! Seems to me like Ben Weinman has a bit to do with how awesome Dillinger was rhythmically. Lucky I got to see them before they split. Killer band!

Billy is a friggin beast. There is a video of him slaughtering Mike portney. Absolutely crushes him. Honestly, this isn’t even Billy at his most complex. Not even close to his skill level.

Wow, i think the same than you. Billy kills Portnoy, but was sweet compared with the true Billy. I know things so much amazing of Billy Rymer. LOL...Mike Portnoy was killed by Billy using a 43% of his hability.

It also took me a couple of years to slowly get into Dillinger - since then they've been one of my all time favorites. Saw them live once and will probably never experience better live band in my life ^^ There's not enough Billy on KZbin - But there is a playtrough on Tama's FB page m.facebook.com/tamadrums/videos/1870481039632445/ Limerenth Death from Dillinger's last album (with vocals too!) It's ridiculously chaotic and skillful ^^
