S.O.D. - Hell Yeah! Back in the day when you had to buy an album based on its album art, because you couldn't hear it first... my drummer bought this album - and so many of our friends loved it so much! One time we were on a HS band trip, and someone started playing Madonna's "Lucky Star" against objections... and so they were met with my friends performing a sing-along of SOD's "Pussy Whipped" (and others)- which was absolutely hilarious... but did draw some ire from the band director... lol

That SOD record is really unsurpassed in thrash. Crossover bands had just begun taking the best from hardcore punk and metal and welding it together. Punk no longer had to be played on tinny snares, strats and combo amps. It could be heavy. Some purists disagreed and still do. They were wrong and still are. United Forces.

I knew about S.O.D b4 Anthrax because of headbangers ball. The song that was used in the opening was March of the S.O.D. It was years and years later after being an Anthrax fan, I learned of the connection. I can't remember exactly, but I think on one of Anthrax's tapes they had a live version of MILK.

No way is this the first example of a blast beat. It was prevalent in the Hardcore Punk scene, which SOD was apeing, merging it with Thrash Metal. It was used in the Asocial demo in 1982, DRI in 1983 and even the Beastie Boys on "Riot FIght" in 1982. It was Napalm Death who coined the phrase "Blast Beat" back in 1985.
@MyCoolboy17
@MyCoolboy17 10 ай бұрын
That’s my understanding of it as well, napalm death said blast beat in the line of the song with the first known gravity blast in a song, so I always thought they were the first to popularize the blast beat but maybe it was just the gravity blast

Obviously everyone has their own individual criteria and metrics for determining things like this, but as far as I'm concerned, Benante and Bello is one of the top three tightest rhythm sections in the history of metal (The other two being McBrain / Harris from Maiden and Menza / Ellefson from Megadeth's "golden era" lineup).

March of the S.O.D, off that album was the official theme song for the also important MTV show Headbangers Ball. That album was just a combination of lightning fast playing and aggression and humor! I don't think Charlie has ever claimed to have invented the blast beat, and as others have pointed out it was already being used on the recordings of other hardcore bands. What Charlie and SOD did do, however, was introduce blast beats to a wider audience who wouldn't have heard them before since a lot of metal fans checked out SOD because of the Anthrax connection.

S.O.D was one of those bands that I never really got into. There was Celtic Frost, Venom, Black Flag, etc. and all of them were a notch above my threshold. I saw Metallica, WASP, Megadeath, and dozens of other 80's and early 90's heavy metal heroes. S.O.D was more hilarious than anything else. I grew up in Ventura, CA where plenty of punk bands played locally all the time, and heading to those shows we're less about getting rowdy and more about "enjoying the killer tunes and talking about gnarly surf stories."

I grew up with SOD, MOD, DRI and Anthrax. Charlie was one of my favorite drummers in the mid-80’s and definitely one of the fastest drummers from that era. I always thought DRI originated it, though. Back then we thought of alternating 16th notes as cheating! If a speed metal/thrash band drummer could not hit the ride or hi hats at the same time they hit the snare, they were not seen as talented. Obviously everyone knows what Charlie was capable of from Gung-Ho, Deathrider, etc. Boy how times have changed.

I admit, I was kinda hoping youd attempt to break down the drumming, but YE GODS, I dont know how anyone could haha though I was surprised there’s a guy who did it, albeit (Im pretty sure) a simplified version. No way all that noise was actually 1/8th or even 1/16th beats lol but then again, at around 180-200bpm I suppose an 1/8th beat could be pretty fast

🤘I bought this in '85 🤣 thrash was just taking off and Anthrax and Slayer were my goto - so S.O.D. being Anthrax members made it an instant must have. Billy Milano started M.O.D. shortly after with different band members and Anthrax rolled on. This old thrash stuff from NYC was so influenced by punk and small obscure, never heard of local bands. Hearing some of the OG's talk about that time is so cool. 🤘

benante is not the 1st to record a blast beat throughout most of a song---that would most likely be javier madriaga when he played with Heart Attack (1980-1984). specifically, the song "From What I See". also, bands like Heresy (UK) were already experimenting with this style of drumming as early as 1983-85. here's Heart Attack doing it on their EP: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZOteJ2niN1sgcksi=k1P-AfmGHLIWpgX9

Anthrax did re-record a couple of S.O.D. songs ("Milk" and "Chromatic Death") for their "Attack Of The Killer B's" EP (Scott figured since he and Charlie wrote 'em they could do 'em); the Anthrax versions are a lot cleaner sounding than the originals, there's a fair few good covers on that EP as well. As far as the origins of Blast Beats, one could cite Bellson or Rich as those guys were fairly fast going back (it's pretty much up in the air); there's probably more information about that on KZbin, sounds a little similar to Eddie VH "inventing" tapping on the guitar. The techniques can be honed and further developed as time passes.

@@jorgechavezhartley8785 I found a handful of hardcore punk bands doing it in 1982. Also, DRI 1982 demo featured the same blast beat in song No Sense, a year earlier then LP. Blast beats were originally a punk/hardcore thing, but after 1986 metalheads appropriated it and did a whole new science on it.

Not a drummer so I don't know what "blast beat" really means. Double kicks? I know Accept was doing fast double kicks around '79. The song "Fast As A Shark" was one that featured it.

Fast as a shark is way too slow to be considered blast beat. Listen to the whole song Andrew plays and you will know when you hear the fastest part.

@@peter2359 welll, we can also talk about when a blastbeat is a blastbeat in terms of playing it 5 seconds or 10 seconds or a whole song? I mean the thing about blastbeat is also the ability of the drummer to hold the speed for certain time period. Therefore my blastbeat beginning in metal music would be Morbid Angel, cause Pete Sandoval did the job in inventing high speed drumming.
