@duttdits Please tell me how Primus was, I beg you. I took my 13 year old daughter because Coheed is her favorite band (thanks to me playing them incessantly), and she didn't want to stay for Primus. I snagged the Les Claypool box set on vinyl a few months ago, and I fell in love all over again. His live cover of Pink Floyd's Animals album is insane. Also, did Puddles Pity Party open at your show? I was legit impressed with his set.
@duttdits3 ай бұрын
@@imperfectious Primus was freaking incredible. It was definitely a Primus crowd and not a Coheed crowd. Les is freaking godlike on bass. It's easily the most technically impressive bassist I've ever seen live. Played a standard bass, 6 string bass, fretless bass, and standup bass with a violin bow throughout the night. He put on a latex pig mask for the stand up bass. Came out and did an epically long encore too. Too Many Zooz opened for us. They were a Trumpet, Sax, and Percussion band with no singer. The brass instruments did the lyrical melodies. They were actually really impressive. The guy on the sax was insanely talented. I'm jealous you got Puddles! He's so good!

There's actually somewhat of a drummer nerd easter egg in this song. In the main riff (beginning, choruses and ending) Eppard subtly adds these crazy hi hat pedal patterns where he alternates between fourths and eight notes in between the kicks, pausing every other bar. I don't know if he does this live, but I vividly remember my friends and I totally geeking out over it when we first got this record over twenty years ago. I've never really heard anyone do that, neither before nor since, and it adds a layer of complexity (or quirkiness as he might call it) to the song. Fantastic drummer.

I've been a fan since around '02 when I first heard this album. Josh had left and Chris from Dillinger Escape Plan was drumming then(fantastic as well) but the thing I've always loved and still do about Josh aside from his skill is how much joy and feeling he expresses when he plays. It's interesting that you mention technicality vs. musicianship because for the brief time Josh wasn't in the band and Chris Pennie from The Dillinger Escape Plan joined, it was an obvious shift because Pennie's playing was pretty much 100% technical and it drastically changed the bands sound. Not in a bad way necessarily but very noticeably.
