why even compare? You know that the awards for "best drummer" naturally tend to favour career and not "skill", since the latter is kinda immeasurable
@AcidEnemaBand6 жыл бұрын
I never compare a drummer to another,because I know it's pointless.It's just as you said that the latter is emmeasurable.Every day we discover the "best" drummer who is better than the previous who was the "best" in the world yesterday.I'm just saying that Alex can do better than Beyond Oblivion :)
@almadaestudios6 жыл бұрын
I did understand what u ment. Thing is, what is better? Faster? more dynamics? more "chops"? It´s hard to know. If u drum too much outside a shuffle, most blues guys will kick u out of the "gig". You´re suposed to keep ur place. But again, I know what you mean, and am not disagreeing with you. You mean a more creative performance, from the same artist, yes I agree
@almadaestudios6 жыл бұрын
But to answer the first comparison, IF comparison would be possible, no, Marthus does not destroy Alex in any way, come on. Marthus is great, but he´s not even the best drummer in cradle of filth
@claygo1266 жыл бұрын
@8:55 Sure, this could be played on one ride... but with two, it allows each to be mic'd separately and panned. This results in an incredible sound on the album and makes the drumming sound more complex than it actually is.

I've said it before, and it needs to be said again: Other Reaction-video-creators should be obligated to watch Marthyn's videos before they're allowed to upload any video of any kind. Marthyn's videos are always jam packed with useful information and insights on drumming techniques. It's actual content, rather than focusing on the vlogger himself. I'm not saying it has to be about drumming, but this approach to making reaction videos is absolutely essential. What I usually hear from other reaction videos is "wow", "insane", or just silence while the music video is playing in the background. For most reaction vloggers, the video is about themselves, not the actual music. Marthyn takes the music, expands it and makes it even more interesting. It's never about him, it's about what takes place in the video he's reacting to.

Couple things I thought of that I felt like sharing: About his pedal settings: Using lower spring tension and heavier beaters allows him to use the weight in motion has a pendulum effect, and the rebound just like we do with sticks at the fulcrum. About two rides, what I like in the mix is that even if you could technically play the pattern on one ride cymbal. It wouldn't sound like it does in this mix, because there are two sound sources (And a tiny variance in pitch because no two cymbals are perfectly matched). One on the right of the overheads, and one on the left. Giving a cool effect. I have used two rides in the past for a similar thing, but I actually use two different sounding rides usually. Another thing I really liked about his playing was his hand technique. He's using his fingers for almost equally hard hits as his wrists does (During the double ride part at 8:55 for example) and his switching between arm, wrist and fingers is hard to even notice.

9:30, there are many benefits from having 2 ride cymbals, first it feels way more natural to be doing fast singles/double strokes or even paradiddle and any kind of rudiments on 2 rides if these are set on the left and right side, doing it on 1 ride, (usually on the right for right handed drummers and left for lefty) means you have to bring one side of your body/other limb closer to your leading side which is actually harder and makes hitting on the upbeat trickier as you have to either use your left side or cross arms by having your right arm go over your left arm while playing which is not very practical, then it is good for working your independence, i used to only have 1 ride, since i am using 2 rides and 2 hi hats, i tend to play 16th notes more often on the left side as it leave my right side which is stronger on the snare, and gives me a stronger attack naturally, you can even work on reverse traditionnal blast beat which is quite tricky aswell ! Having 2 ride cymbals made me progress quite a lot especially when it comes to power and accuracy with my left side, then another benefit is that you can have 2 different ride sound, my right side is a Meinl Raker, which is made in B8 alloy, with a hi pitch long sustain, pretty nice for blasting or just have a big cutting bell during rock parts etc.. Left side is a Black metal ride by Stagg, which is an half raw B20 cymbal, darker with less sustain and more swing/splash to it, really better when it comes to softer parts playing shuffle and swing which s actually nice aswell ! Overall you have to get used to it, but it makes everything easier! Which is what drumming should be about no ? Like using the free hand technique by Dom Famularo, or working with ankle weights like you do, which makes following the speed of the pedal easier aswell !

9:33 If you use 2 ride with 2 hands it's more comfortable than 1 one ride. But you lose more free area on the left because the ride is big and you can't take an extra tom or a cymbal before the hihat or up the hihat. He use 2 because he needn't more tom or cymbal but there are many Trivium song where he play with 2 ride
@dougarnold79556 жыл бұрын
That's neat how he rests the stick on the snare between beats. I've noticed some drummers do this (I guess it's just personal choice) but it does seem like the timing would be easier to keep this way, a bit like stopping strings on guitar. Also the low tension on the pedals is intriguing, the ability to rest the beater against the head...it's like consistency of approach with hands and feet.

@randysterbentz55994 жыл бұрын
Just an amateur thought, but another reason he might have two ride cymbals is on the sound design side of things. If the rides are mic'd separately and panned to opposite sides during playback, it gives a neat ringing-in-your-ears feeling. I thought about that just because immediately afterwards he swaps between the two chinas and you hear a difference in the panning (or maybe they're just pitched differently)

9:05 If you don't want to carry second ride for 16 note accents on ride bell, would it be easier to carry some percussion 12'' bell, or even 2 exact same bells on the right&left for the same effect?

I would just play as much as possible on the bell of the 1 ride I bring with me

I'm here just to suggest some solutions for playing stuff like Alex did without hurting your back. Cheers!

Very insightful analysis - thank you for that! Also, it would be really interesting if you react to Matt Halpern or Mike Mangini. Cheers from Klagenfurt

Great video. I read when Trivium made their last album ( and debut with Alex Bent) Alex often did his drums in the studio in 1 take, and rest of the band were blew away by his drumming skills. I hate the fact I sold my pearl export kit now lol
