Back when I was in High School (in the 70s) I was into Rock because of John Bonham, and then I hear Buddy Rich's drum solo on cassette -that converted me to Jazz.

I first heard Buddy Rich on the album Rich vs. Roach from 1959. Since then, I have spent a lifetime in drums, drummers & drumming. Yes, there was Morello, Jones, Williams, Gadd, Weckl and more; but in my humble option...Buddy Rich was The Greatest Natural Drummer in The History of The World.

I saw him live in a small town (Aberdeen about 80,000 people) in Scotland in 1986. He toured with his band 9 months per year every year. He toured EVERYWHERE not just the big venues, all the smaller towns and cities too. He got a standing ovation and gave an encore! The first second you entered and heard him play it was astounding. The closest anyone has got to describing it is he was like a 'one man orchestra'! You may think with all the tapes you have seen his 'repertoire'. True he did things live as on tape but he did a few dazzling moves I have never seen since! He did this stunt where like a gunshot out of the blue, without warning, he whipped, twisted around to the right in playing a roll/ fill across the tom's and finishing on the floor tom. It was too fast to see! It was a blur. The only reason you knew he had reached the floor tom was the evidence of the sound of it!

No less a figure than Buddy Rich considered her to be a superior player. “I remember one time when Karen and I went to see Buddy’s band,” says Cubby O’Brien. “I knew Buddy fairly well, so before the show I took her backstage to meet him. I said ‘Buddy, this is Karen Carpenter.’ He said, ‘Karen Carpenter, do you know that you’re one of my favorite drummers?” As tough as Buddy could be on drummers sometimes, he always respected someone who played the instrument well.”

it should be noted the reason that this is an "impossible" drum solo is not due to that this performance stands out among his other drum solos or some technique that stands out particularly in comparison with the other greats of today or yesterday, but the fact that he had a heart attack and continued to the amazing crescendo of the piece. it was the alignment of his massive work ethic and innate aptitude that made him so great.

Buddy was in terrible health here. I believe he was 63 here and wearing a tux in scorching hot weather in the Dominican Republic..makes it even more amazing..and this is not even his best solo in my opinion... stunning..this is West Side Story suite..always amazing..what about his control of the kick drum where he switched his right hand roll with the kick rolling. I think you called it the split..how'd he do that with the kick so precise and fast!?

You had mentioned his pour health and I'm not sure if this was the one, but I had read in one of the videos he had actually had a heart attack in the middle of the performance and didn't stop playing. He was truly the best!

This was the solo where he had the heart attack - you can see the point where he is breathing heavily near the end. And he still does things that shouldn't be possible lol. Incredible.

In a tux! Technically very clean. Self taught. Fastest snare rolls. Doesn’t read music, just rehearses and gets the feel for the chart and the band. Also a perfectionist, he wants his band to be as clean with the technique as he is. Buddy Rich is also a black belt in karate. This time of his career this solo is more colorful and arranged beautifully than when he was younger just showing off his technique.

People have no idea how insanely hard it is to pull off that super soft (quiet) but super fast drum roll and then raise the volume to a masterpiece of a loud drum roll, same exact high speed roll, just so gradual from soft to loud? Crazy control. They should call him Buddy Chops.

Buddy Rich was #1 then and will always be #1! I can't imagine anyone ever taking that away from him. I have a suggestion for a reaction video. I would like to see you listen to an ENTIRE rock album from like 1972. It is about 38 minutes long. The band is Captain Beyond. KZbin search Captain Beyond full album. The cover is an image of some fantasy space captain. Bobby Caldwell (still alive today) is the drummer who came out of the band Johnny Winter And. Guitar and bass player came out of Iron Butterly and the singer was the original Deep Purple singer who sang Hush on the first Deep Purple album. It's a concept album where each song flows into the next. So it really is like one song for 38 minutes. When you watch it try qand count the number of time changes throughout. Rock bands rarely do this many time changes especially back then. I consider this album the best studio rock drumming ever recorded. I think you will be overwhelmed. I bought that Captain Beyond album when it first came out. The first time I played it the drumming throughout the album just blew me away. I also bought the second album, Sufficiently Breathless, but by then Bobby Caldwell had left the band. Caldwell returned for their third album but I never got around to buying it. Caldwell has reformed the band in a few variations over the years but I just have never kept up.

As with all of Buddy's playing, this solo is great. But, I don't know why it was labeled "impossible", when so many other performances are available today online. What's most remarkable about this one is that it was extremely hot at the performance, and Buddy nearly had a (another) heart attack, by the time he got backstage... and yet he still gave it 110%, which was his trademark. I sat in front of this man and his band many nights from 1968 until his passing, and EVERY ONE was "impossible". Check out (on KZbin) the "Buddy Rich live at the 1982 Montreal Jazz Festival", "Buddy Rich live at the Hague", and "Buddy Rich live in Cologne", for just a few examples. :)

Yes he hits the base drum with his stick. Plays a solo on the cymbal stands. Hits them upside down . golfed the record for the fastest 1 handed high hat riff. And 1 handed snare drum riff. Uses every part of his kit. Cymbal solos. And uses the old school left handed way of holding the drum stick ! And still does it over 70 years old ! Touched by the hand of God ! Period ! No other explanations ! FLAT OUT !

Most drummers who play a solo just beat the hell out of the drums. Buddy’s solo here has tonality and musicality. Buddy’s drum playing is impossible to emulate. I have been drumming for 40 years and I haven’t seen anyone even get close to this. Not John Bonham or others. The only one I’ve seen is Louis Belsen but even Louis lacks the musicality of Buddy. Buddy is the King. The grand master R.I.P

Where did you go? You have to keep making videos to become a KZbin SuperStar... Some suggestions for you. I like Japanese females. Junna- Through the Fire and Flames Kanade Sato- look for "Sensational girl drummer fools crowd at Japanese shopping mall" Senri Kawaguchi (anything by her). Drummer world made her a top 500 drummer at 14 I think. Yoyoka- Kill the King She passed Senri's record and became a top 500 drummer at 11. Okay... How about some male drummers. Caleb H- Eyeless by Slipknot He is like 6 and plays Slipknot perfectly. Alex Rudinger- Xenochrist (we think Alex is an alien) Greyson Nekrutman- pick a track... this 19 year old is on the path of becoming the next Buddy Rich. I shit you not.

Seriously, what is up with people like you? I’ve already addressed this. In all of my classical training, we never referred to each other as “drummers,” for reasons I’ll explain in just a bit. Suffice to say because it was seen as disrespectful. For your convenience, I’ll copy my original response to this mind numbing take so you don’t have to search. These are semantics at best. BUT, Since you brought it up. In my musical circles (not that it matters really), “drummer” was actually a derogatory word to describe a percussionist, which is ideally what you wanted to be if you were serious about music. To me (and all of my instructors and fellow students), drummer evokes visions of someone banging away on a single tub with no regard for time, tempo or musicality. I would take being called a drum set player over drummer any day. And nobody is criticizing here. What is happening here is celebratory. My videos are more like long winded appreciation posts. Which, if you really are a fan of Buddy, you should appreciate.

Its just his over exposure that's elevated him to this mythological status, i think Louie Belson was better but you didn't see Belson on Carson a hundred times or a plethora of solo videos. All this solo is to me is fast noise, this doesn't sound like music to me and any top-shelf percussionist can move just as fast, but they dont because it doesn't equal good😮

@@terrychristian9580 drum set was the first percussive instrument that I ever played, but I came up classically trained. I, and even people in this comment section, who came up playing in symphony orchestras, jazz bands and marching bands strived to be percussionists (a lot of my drum set playing is jazz based). So when someone referred to us as drummers (meaning we could only play one drum I.e. skill-less vs. the wide range of percussive instruments to include mallet playing) they were likely saying it in a derogatory way, because it meant you weren’t a percussionist.

In the rock music of the 70s/80s/90s that I play, it’s not as complicated so drummer is the go-to term. But referring back to the original post, I would admit that Buddy Rich was so much more than just a drummer. But the OP of that video kept referring to him as a “drum set player”, and that is a term over never heard in my life, so it was kind of annoying to me. 🤣
