same. first time i heard "take off your pants and jacket" i was amazed at how creative his beats were. unlike anything i've heard in the pop punk scene. most people always focus on how 'technically' good some drummers are but what they fail to respect is how big a role creativity plays in music. it's not just about turning every song into a drum solo, it's about finding the perfect way to express something. the way travis drums always fits the song he's doing, whether it's blink, BCR, hiphop, or something else.

Thanks for breaking down BOTH what's awesome and what isn't the best way. That thumb photo was pretty gruesome. It's good to teach people how to avoid that. Lol. I know I may sound like a broken record, but Clyde Stubblefield is still at the top of my request list. The man is self taught and legendary, and I really genuinely feel like there's a lot of drummers that don't know who he is. Especially younger ones. I agree alot with you on his technique, but I also like how you highlight his creativity, wich in my opinion is the thing that makes Barker a really great drummer. If you listen to alot of pop-punk acts now, you can see alot of influence from him. They way he goes from half-time to double-time and uses cymbals like an extension of the drum set inspired alot of drummers, including me. The bad thing is that I kinda lose my technique everytime that i play blink songs. It's probably because of watching videos of him alot when I was a kid.

You already mentioned it but in his book he talks about how he played on Conan O'Brien's show, and Max Weinberg told him that he could seriously hurt himself playing the way he does when he's older. Travis was already aware of this, and says that he purposely sets his drums up flat and cymbals very high to make himself uncomfortable, that is why any time he plays someone else's kit he can do so with ease because it's set up normally compared to his. As for his style, he mentions in an old modern drummer magazine interview that he's not a punk-rock drummer just because he plays in Blink-182. Travis is actually well versed in most styles of music, even jazz. He's actually a great drummer that elitists like to look down on because he trades off more of the traditional ways of drumming for flashiness and showmanship.
