I stumbled upon this video because I've been reviewing drum kits, I live in the north and I thought it would be a great hobby to pick up in the winter for those days I don't feel like going to the gym or doing anything, I can go play for an hour for cardio and learn a new skill! So obviously all of this is WAY above my head but I still watched the entire video, it was that good!

I also use triggers to open the gates. Heres how it works. When you go into the channel for each drum, you can choose what the mixer is using to determine when the gate opens and closes. Typically the default option is "self", aka the mic that the channel itself is using. Variations of this include self pre eq, and self post eq. Another option entirely is sidechain to another channel. This is what's happening with the trigger. The gate on the tom channel is completely ignoring the mic, and only listening to the trigger instead. This way, even if the snare is wicked loud, it doesnt open up the gate and get bleed into the toms mics.

Coming from largely acoustic settings, it's amazing how many mics go onto a kit like this. But it makes sense: in an arena situation playing metal, mic bleed is flat-out unavoidable, so to deal with it... you trigger the mics!

For anyone wondering what the heck a “gate” does (and why a trigger is being used for this task) it basically shuts off the microphone until the sound from that microphone gets to a certain volume, in which case it turns “on” the mic for whatever amount of time that the sound guy decides (usually one second or less) only to turn off again when that sound isn’t loud. A piezo trigger can do this task more immediately than a microphone can, and when it’s attached the drum itself it’s way less susceptible to a different loud drum or cymbal hit making the microphone think that the volume level set to open the gate (aka “threshold”) has been hit. Great video Matt!

I am not a drummer (my son is), but I’ve played guitar for ~30 years. I find the process of setting up, checking, and tuning the drums before each show mesmerizing. The tear down was also pretty rad. I have a ton of respect for the professionalism and consistency to your approach. I’ve always wanted to be a guitar tech and have zero delusions about how much work it is for every show for you. Made it all the way to the end would love to see another one of these at another arena somewhere down the road. Great stuff!

Really cool to see the behind-the-scenes, especially since this particular venue is where I saw some of my first shows, and because at one point in my life, I aspired to be in this business. Something important for us civilians to understand is that there is a whole invisible crew of people behind the ticket purchase that allow our concert experience to be optimal. I think the keys to being a premiere drum tech are processes and procedures. You have both. Doing the same thing every time, whether it’s tuning, retuning immediately before, following the FOH instructions or placing your bungees in the same spot so that you always know where they are, you have to do these things so that your customer (drummer) receives the same experience every night. And then so can the paying crowd. Being so careful and meticulous is an art form unto itself. And you’re a kick ass drummer in your own right. Congrats on a terrific video!
