David is an exceptional musician, a precision master technician in technique, and he has an amazing "clock" which is quite apparent every time he throws down. He is quite easily near the top of my list for amazing metal drummers. My favorite video he has done is Nile's The Inevitable Degradation of Flesh. I've watched that video probably more than 20 or 30 times. I've never seen anyone do a Kollias song better than George himself, until David put that amazing video out. Thank you very much for having David on. These interviews are fantastic and I look forward to more of my top drummers coming onto your show. Maybe someday you can get Emil Wiksten on for some banana blasting?

Thanks for sharing your work Martyn, let me tell you that I was some of those haters mean guys, I was being rude with other musicians as well, even I didn't like your reacting videos... As time goes by I have been learning how wrong and stupid I was, being mean to other musicians for no reason is just stupid, there are a lot of great musicians and human beings like you and David, it was the best thing that you never quit even though there were stupid people like I was. Thanks for teaching me a life lesson. Now all I do is watch your videos to learn from great drummers and also enjoy listening to awesome guys like you both

Love love love this podcast!! Was amazing to hear David talk actually since he rarely gets in front of the camera to speak. It was a huge honor for me to have him play drums on my album and his technique is immaculate and he's such a nice and down to earth guy. I learnt a lot from this podcast. It's upsetting to hear Diepold saying he probably will not tour again, to hear one of the most precise drummers in the genre say that means not too many people will get to see him live...at least he's doing what makes him happy and that's what matters. Thanks for this Martin.

28:58 I was just listening to this while doing the laundry, but had to pause for a second while David was speaking about being a teacher. Unbelievable! I teach high school in Germany (Gymnasium) and definitely know times in a school year when you can’t find the time to practice for weeks. Unfortunately, the most stressful time of year is exam season from late March to early June, which is also when the first festival gigs are coming up. It is so hard to get in shape for the amount of gigs in summer when you also have to grade exams throughout spring. Just hearing that David is also teaching has provided me with more optimism than all of the interviews with drummers I’ve watched over the last month combined. Obviously I will never reach David’s level of proficiency, but knowing that you can become that good while not making drumming your full time job was really uplifting. Thanks for that!

OMG!! David is an inspiration to me, he is a beast on the drums and plays so well with an excellent technique. It's nice to see drummers of technicians and professionals, playing a style of music criticized by many. No doubt David is among my favorites as Sebastian Lanser, Alex Rudinger, James Stewart, Krimh, Romain Goulon, Hannes Grossman, etc. etc. They are all incredible playing at an almost impossible level and so technical and pro. Excellent note, thank you very much for that! greetings from Argentina!!!!

Great video as always ! Thanks for inviting him :) Regarding pedal settings related stuff, some pedals offer more complex options than let's say Axis. CK for example offers 3 or 4 settings just on the drive (much like Trick), but also 4 on the rotating part where the drive is attached (I forgot the name), maybe I'm just being picky but I think it would be cool to have the details of such settings, with the standard spring tension, beater angle, etc... Would love to see some guys like Hellhammer, Frost, Kevin Paradis, Dan Presland, John Longstreth, etc...for the future ones ;)

Thank you Martin and David! I usually don't comment much in drumming videos unless they really impact and inspire me to say something good. That is because I know how much work it takes from developing your skills, recording, editing and presenting it. Great video showing David's outlook about his drumming. I've been following David's videos for a couple of years now and it has helped me immensely to see and apply some of his foot techniques into my drumming. I don't consider myself an extreme drummer. I am more of a progressive drummer in the sense of innovation and exploring and developing new ideas. I classify myself as an outcast drummer. But all these ideas about foot and hand technique apply to any drumming style or genre of music. I believe it is up to the musician to take them, use them, and develop them further in order to facilitate their performance and pass them to others. Great work David! Amazing job Martin! Keep it Up!!! You got a new subscriber!!! Thank you!

Well, with your approach - a great drummer interviewing great drummers! - I think you could turn an interview with any drummer into a gem and get insights we wouldn't usually get from standard interviews and instructional videos. Off the top of my head I'd say Kollias, Hoglan, Roddy, Reinert, Mounier, Longstreth, Alex Micklewright, Dylan Elise, Trey Williams, Dave McGraw, Ed Warby, Federico Paulovich... oh, and Doug Bohn! Not the most extreme drummer out there but his work on Pierced from Within was so tasteful and innovative at the time.

I've been playing the Vic X5B's for years too. Used to be X5A's way back before I finally quit being a casual drummer and started educating myself. David's remarks on his foot technique relying crucially on his posture eventually led me to a feet breakthrough, where in combination w my throne height and distance I can now shred on a whole new plane of speed and consistency and most important ease and efficiency starting to replace stamina and muscle burn... I know I've finally got somewhere decent w my ankle tech; that is a deceptively hard journey because it's counterintuitive how much more is being done with so much less range and intensity of movement...nowadays I remind myself to chill out and not do too much above the knee...the upright lower back posture allows me to employ what Eugene explained so well about being able to lift a foot all the way off the pedal at a moments notice and maintain perfect balance- the posture and throne setup and relaxing hip flexors(for me at least) were the keys to finally feeling how these mofo's like Martin et al are shredding seemingly effortlessly at high tempos. It's a whole new world, thanks guys. That's my courageous story.
