The shoes to fill in Wintersun were gigantic: Kai Hahto is so insanely good, the best drummer in the world in the metal genre. I am so happy that Rolf took the job and pushed himself to learn what Kai had done for Wintersun albums. Rolfs skills and work ethic are awe-inspiring, and that is what Wintersun needs (so Jari doesn't use a damn drum machine again on an album :( ).

Very helpful podcast, lots of good information to learn from each drummer! One question I would add is how do they write the drum parts and fills for the new songs? Do they just play until they find the perfect beat that fits good with the guitars or they first draw it in drum editor software and then learn to play them?

Thanks Martyn... i'm not a drummer but a stratovarius fan only... can i ask you why Rolf with Wintersun use 2 single pedal for 2 bass drums and for Stratovarius he use a double pedal on only bass drum? it is due to lack of time to set the drum before the gig or these different settings are required fro these extreme different music types or other? Thanks in advance, Giuly

Rolf is my former drumteacher and back in 2004 or 2005 the reasoning to use two singles or one double pedal is down to couple of things: with singles you have more stuff to carry, using 2 bassdrums and 2 bassdrum triggers removes a lot of false triggering and 2 bassdrums gives a more grand visual impression. Double pedals are so good and adjustable nowadays that there is no change in the feel of pedals changing from singles to a double. Or at least the change is so minor that it doesn't matter.
