@@sebg2086 dude brooks wackerman is technically one of the best drummers in modern metal/rock, doesn't matter if he was playing pop or punk or jazz gigs before. His brother literally drummed for Zappa and his dad was a drum teacher, the guy is from a family of drummers. He was one of The Rev's main inspirations as a drummer. He's still a technical asf drummer, better than the rev purely talking technique

I get it it's your opinion but there are more drummers like Rev who are as dedicated and talented as he is. Brooks, Eloy or any other working professional drummers that you know today have been doing the same thing that Rev did. They were probably in a different situation and place but the dedication and hard work from practicing and creative brainstorming is mutual to them and also to other drummers that you probably haven't heard of yet.

I have friends that are elitists about metal and our drummers themselves, but they still say he was one of the craziest ones to do it. His style will never be replicated hearing that from Cannibal Corpse elitists made me happy because they understood how much work was put in to his skill, my other friend, who is also a drummer has a theory that heart related problems happen more often to drummers due to their high usage of their bodies on continuous amounts of time which hearing about Jimmy consistently practicing nonstop, kind of makes sense to why he was the way he was and how he sadly passed

Absolutely, as a drummer myself, I think he was a one of a kind. There are better technical drummers, and faster drummers today, but he had a creative style that gave him a sound I don't think will ever be topped. He also looked great playing, the energy he gave off and the flashy way that he played.

I remember when I was getting more serious about drumming around the time A7X was becoming more mainstream. I remember being around 15 and listening everything A7X that I could get my hands on. I was listening to Waking The Fallen, Seventh Trumpet, City of Evil and trying to mimic everything I could hear (I couldn't read the music at the time) and I couldn't do it. Hearing the Rev do his thing was something special and taken away from us way too early.

I think the true reason avenged sevenfold has been and will probably always be my favourite band/artist of all is because each member of the band has their own highly complex and unique way of performing. The more i learn of each member and their instrument/vocal technique, the more i can go back to each song/album and pick out very specific moments of a song that i haven’t really picked up on before. It just never gets boring. They are truly the only artist i dont get sick of.

love the video, always glad to see this band and drummer being talked about. I honestly think some of the reasons people think he played the way he did and his commitment and tenacity towards drumming seemed thought out and driven towards being the best, but the Rev seemed almost animalistic about it, like it was his nature, he wasn't drumming to be the best or most popular, but it's because he was doing what he genuinely loved. Also knowing that he was born with an enlarged heart that most likely wouldn't let him live past 30 was probably what drove him to the depths that he went. I cried when I found out he passed because he embodied doing what you love the most with your life, and I strive to be even an ounce of that, as both a drummer and person.

That overnight success point you made is relevant for so much more than drumming or music and hits home for me. I practiced and studied programming 7 days a week for 7 years straight before landing my first professional software engineering position. I didn't apply to any companies during the first 5 years of practice and study time because I thought I wasn't good enough. I also didn't learn more than 1 programming language until after that 7 years was up because I wanted to make sure I was proficient with one programming language before moving to others. The practicing the boring basics also hit home for me because I was doing the same thing with programming, creating that muscle memory and fully understanding what those basics did, why they work the way they did and how they work under the hood. Fantastic video and thank you for putting the advice out there for others to learn from and maybe even apply them to different things.

That's insane doing an entire album in 1 take. As a Producer, Studio Engineer I understand exactly what that would take if true. That's a Ton, a $h!t Ton of Practice to nail it. And certainly I'm sure some of it had to be edited after, but so what. Often when I've recorded great Drummers who were very prepared, they still usually play several takes and we still then usually need at least some minimal edits.

I absolutely love the way that you explained that last point. I constantly argue with drummers and musicians that talent is nothing more than an excellent excuse, successful drummers are so good because they're just "talented" and you're not, they're so much better because they actually put in that hard work. They slaved away hours of their lives practicing very basic, simple, and boring rudiments so that they could boost themselves to an upper echelon of skill, even when everyone was telling them that it was a waste of time, even if they ever started believing that it might be a waste of time. They never gave up and they never stopped working hard on their craft. But people say it's talent, I feel like that's an insult to their dedication. Here, you use the word "luck", and I could not agree more, it's the same idea. Because to say "Oh, The Rev was just so talented, I could never do what he did", you're blaming his success on an idea that he just won some genetic lottery and got luckier than you. But to admire his passion and dedication is to understand all of the hard work that came with it.

holy mother of all that is glory. i always loved avenged sevenfold for the drumming. the Rev was iconic to me as a kid and i didn’t know the bands name as my mom didn’t let me listen to them so i would have to sneak their cds at my friend’s house. drums was the first instrument i learned when i wanted to start playing music, and by then i had wanted to learn to play afterlife on the drums because the fills are so satisfying. shortly thereafter i realized i would have to play a lot more drums to get there. then i learned about the story of this drummer and i was always awestruck. keep in mind my friend group and a lot of people i was around would have probably thought A7X was cringe, i don’t have a better word. but i fucking loved the Rev’s work. i never even fucking knew he recorded an entire fucking album in one fucking take. i don’t know why i didn’t look further into the band or into the music parts themselves. but im so happy to know that there’s yet another reason to sing the praises of the Rev’s drumming. god tier barely scratches the surface. Edit: and yeah i didn’t say RIP because i don’t respect the artist because they died. the Rev is still alive and commands respect via the music.

All of these bands that we cut their teeth through live shows and a hard life doing it from nowhere. When people talk about some of the greatest drummers of all time they always talk about the drummers that have been in the game for 20+ years, but Rev was just a kid and cemented himself as one of the greats

The Reverend died on my birthday. I am a drummer as well. I used to play a lot of metal songs and the Rev was a pretty big influence on my style. Thanks for the video 👌

Have you seen the drums from Mars Volta? They are insane (Like the intro of Tettragramaton, or In Absentia live (easier to hear drums), The Whip Hand, Cassandra Gemini)

The Rev did more than just drum for the band, he contributed a lot to the music, ever since he passed the bands direction completely changed, their music doesn't even sound the same since the self titled album.

New to your videos, but I've been loving them and I'm not even a drummer (guitar). Also... super off topic, but where did you get that oversized shirt lol. I really dig the look.

the rev and brooks are the embodiment of "don't practice it until you play it right, practice it until you can't play it wrong"

As a late starter to music it was such a light of inspiration to know that Bird was practicing 6 or more hours a day to get great and come back and knock everyone’s socks off …. And so that was the game plan to play catch up and actually get to a place where I could express myself on a kit …. And that’s what it takes and that’s who it’s for

My favourite song from them(from what i know) instrumentally speaking, and overall, is blinded in chains. The song wasn’t just a masterpiece in itself, but also placed in a masterpiece game that got me interested in metal to begin with: Need for speed most wanted 2005. The song goes crazy hard to this day and is really incredible as a whole, and i thank it very much for getting me into metal, along with some other tracks in most wanted, such as hand of blood by bullet for my valentine, and the rap-metal song, nine thou, and i thank shawn white snowboarding for getting me into heavy rock bands like three days grace. I also became a huge fan of linkin park around 2011, but in not sure what introduced me to them

I'm 62 years old I started playing at 9 years old in school on a wood frame with a thick rubber circle on it, at times I can play like a pro, other times it'd pure crap, but I love playing and play just for me, good bad or indifferent I Love playing
