Well, in a way they were fought like that. The marching snare drum was originated during the Revolutionary War. It was required to make sure everyone on the battle field can hear the snare drum (or trumpet). Different rudiments or notes are used for tactical and non tactical movements, also marching their Soldiers. I guess a good example of the trumpet one is from the movie "We Were Soldiers", where he dude got shot in the neck while giving a retreat command. Both attacking sides usually had some sort of drum or instrument.

Also, the fact that the army line had more people would be a big factor. It will always sound more crisp when you have less people, especially when they are playing 2 different styles.

Wow! 8 years later and I'm completely stoked!! Well, even though I'm AF enthusiast by heart, I think the Army performed better with the artistry and personality. The AF were just tidy and clean, especially with the snares. But the Army were more listenable and the periodic gesticulations was it, for me. Who's the Army lady flipping the cymbals tho?? I've had the privilege to see about a few drum line battles between USAFA and an other military academy, usually after a football game, and being there in person is a real treat! Often there was a dancer going at it on both side, so much fun to watch. At the very end of this video, did you hear "Oh, money!". During warmups, before a game at USAFA, the band would be playing in the tunnel and people above would be hanging over the rail and dropping money down to the band.

At one time musical education was considered vital and the forces wanted to show ppl that they weren't just creating fighting men but well rounded, well educated men as well- shows a softer, more cultured side of the armed forces to the ppl. This way they're more wiling to let their children join, to want them to join in fact- at one time it was about the only way poorer ppl had to hopefully move up in the world. Things are drastically different now but- once something becomes a tradition in the armed forces- it never goes away.

Ex Center Snare here! Wow, Air Force snares really love simple sixteenth patterns. Don’t be fooled by double stops, their hands are almost always going “one-ee-and-a-two-ee-and-a etc”. The reason I’m giving it to the Army is because they deviate from this pattern more. Air Force bass drums were also off a few good times and I heard some not-so-clean snare rolls. The one thing the Air Force did that I liked was incorporating triplets impressively into a few of their rolls.

This is one of my new favorite videos. Army won with more flare, but I think Air Force was a little more tight and precise. Those last couple grooves are two that our high school uses, and it was awesome seeing people way more talented than me rocking them. "Jungle Love" and, what I have been recommending our school does, "Jungle Swing"

I'm from South Africa....and I must say both where extraordinary.....the navy was classic drumline and the army was contemporary drumline. Army looked like bruts and they made it BEAT......navy was more skilled and kept it tight..........I'm so glad we have America as our protector's of earth......big up

Partial to army, because I was a volunteer for Garlstedt Army Music and Theatre Division, in the late 80s. Great that they played together at the end.
