Here in Atlanta there is a loooong history of the black bourgeoisie. When I was younger, I participated in debutante balls and stuff like that. There were certain friends I never let my mom meet because I knew how she would think about them.

Devon was the Willie Beaman of the Drumline... Couldn't read music just like Willie couldn't read football plays! Both shared a love for what they did but lack of integrity and sportsmanship. Both VERY talented but also very ego driven/fueled to where in their storylines both of them needed that character arc of things turning sour for them in order to be humbled and realize what they had in front of them so that they wouldn't self destruct even more.

What also would’ve been dope for Miles character and to add more backstory with his father is the real reason why Miles went to A&T was because his dad actually went there all 4 years and knew his history of him being this the best drummer there and he knew Dr.Lee but it’s never mentioned til like the ending of the film . I think that would’ve cool to see

Another 1:22:34 fun fact. Morris Brown was supposed to be FAMU, but They don’t lose, so they weren’t in the movie. Story told by an Alum who was a student in the band of FAMU at the time. Said Devon’s drummer hands close up was an actual FAMU drummer.

Since we pre scoring movies, I can honestly say that stomp the yard is barely 3 1/2 black fist. The only reason It got that half from me is cause it's only a few movies about black fraternities/sororities. You take that away, I can't see how anybody would rate it more than ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿.

Its interesting hearing Tone’s take on Devin not learning how to read music and how it contributes to his character. When I watched this movie from the first time to now, I believe Devin (off screen) tried to read music in High School and he just couldn’t get it so he then coaches/disciplines himself to be able to hear the beat and replicate it to compensate. That is talent personified to even master that. It falls into his character arc because when he hits that moment where he must read music, he gets defiant and leaves to find a way out. Unfortunately for him, there is no escape this time. Dr. Lee becomes the consequences he has been trying to find a loophole around all his life and it solves a very important character flaw in Devin by the end of it.

Jah and Tone just a point of interest I think you guys my like. Both ATL and Drumline are Dallas Austin bio pics. Remember Dallas Austin was one of the biggest producers in the world by the age of 20. ATL was originally called Jellybean. And is about Cascades. Drumline is about him going to college and learning to read music.

This movie was the first time i saw Nick Cannon & Zoe Saldana. I first saw it when i was on deployment. Myself & my homies from South could relate to this movie due to being from the south & attending HBCU football games. When Devin told his dad that he didn’t have a bunch of children running around that line didn’t age well. Fun Facts: Memphis Bleek was supposed to play Devin & T.I. was offered the role of Devin but couldn’t commit to the drum lessons. We can please get reviews on the following movies: School Daze Stomp The Yard

Love the podcast. Preciate the effort and the energy. That said, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with this film based on the fact that I went to the REAL A&T #NCAT #GHOE and this film created a shabby facsimile. Also, I think if you lived in a state with an HBCU, your appreciation for the black marching band would be VERY different. West coast can’t really speak on this credibly…
@briancobbs9454 Жыл бұрын
I feel you. I’m a LIVINGSTONE grad and played football there as well. I loved ‘Drumline’ because it focused on HBCU culture & put HBCU bands in the forefront. Plus it was the #1 movie in America right behind Barbershop. So, you had 2 Black movies there were the #1 @ the box office, which was the 1st time that happened, I believe. Remember ‘Drumline’ came out in ‘02 around the the time of GHOE. I remember watching this movie in a whole entire theater full NCAT alumni. So, the movie has always been kind of special to me.

I majored in Mass Communication and I remember Jason Weaver coming to one of my classes and telling us Atlanta will become black Hollywood in 2001. Also I took a music class for an elective and I remember walking into class and Andre 3000 was in there chilling with the band director bc the song on idlewild soundtrack “Morris Brown” was suppose to been on Drumlime soundtrack.

Devin whether you see him as cool or not is that dude that was a star in high school. He’s the dude that doesn’t have to practice to be great. So he’s arrogant he’s like I’ma come in and turn this band around. Dr. Lee was to young to be sticking to the music his mentor’s mentor’s mentor introduced. Shawn was bought into what Dr. Lee had taught him but at the same time was the typical upper class-man that wasn’t trying to see a freshman be the man.
