Just to add to the conversation; the lady on keys was the 2nd musician that played keys for the legendary Fusion Jazz band Cassiopeia. If you haven't heard of them, you've probably heard some of their compositions on the 8bit nintendo and Sega game system. Senri is by far the most recognized drummer currently active in the Jazz world overall. She was compared to the late great Buddy Rich at the age of 15 and has performed with some of the most prominent artists such as Guthrie Govan. Remember; they ask HER to perform. But that is little surprise considering her mentor was Kozo Suganuma. Check him out; then you know why her talent has developed her skills so quickly.

Something that feels to me to be overlooked is the simplicity of those snare rolls at the end of those 4-bar phrases. The opportunity is there to do more in terms of fills but by doing those half note rolls, especially in more of a jam session feel, the rolls make the start of the next 4-bar phrase feel more open. It can't be overstated how underrated the feel it creates by such a simple technique to fill the end of the phrase

Senri Kawaguchi learned drumming from Kozo Suganuma since 8 years old. Kozo Suganuma is famous drummer in japan and he is called "King of too many strokes". So, Senri Kawaguchi is called "Princess of too many strokes" :-) Suganuma and the guitarist, Koichi Yabori are working together in a Jazz/Rock band called "Fragile". kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJaWpYhpad6aZrc Yabori plays with both the master and the disciple. The keyboardist, Kiyomi Otaka is also famous among japanese jazz fans also. She is Yabori's wife. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHuUd5aqdrSeZsU

Kio*Sen is named for the Kiyomi Ohtani (keys) and Senri (of course), but the band members are just top tier all-around. They produced at least 4 albums from 2014 (when Senri was just 17) to 2020-ish of progressive jazz/funk/rock and yes, it's just 'really tasty' all through. There's a little bit of rotating players in and out but the guitarist performing here is the "usual" guitarist.

Senri is the most distinguished female drummer of Japan who has also shared a stage with some of the greatest drummers in music history like Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd and Akira Jimbo. She is also one of the youngest (at 13) to be added into the Drummerworld’s list of the Top 500 drummers in the world and has also been featured as the cover artist on an issue of Drumhead magazine. I do like the Kiyo-Sen music. This was obviously more pure jazz but they have a fair amount of songs that are old school prog rock. Think: Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Their newest CD is awesome prog/fusion. Watch her video 'Drumatica' from that album to see her being as she describes herself, "a very busy drummer". BTW, her nickname in the Japanese music circles is "Princess of many strokes". Senri's other band, which is also jazz, has some very fine stuff. I really like her older Buena Vista CD Which I think she put out at age 16 or 17. Here is better example of Senri doing prog with 25/16 timing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXzJe56ihrStbc0. There are other commenters that have mention Haruna of Lovebites. Haruna was founder of that band. She is really worth watching. Check out the video "Liar" (studio live). Good visibility of her drumming compared to other youtube videos and good mixup. A good friend of Senri's is Tamu Murata. A young session drummer in Japan. She has new project called Nemophila. It is a bit of a Japanese supergroup of metal/hard rock godesses. Check out the song she just released she did at home during quarantine last month. She plays both the drums and keyboards. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3jSYqCDpJ2ro9U. A good Nemophila, metal song with her is Oiran, kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6rFY4GqhdyWrsU. Here is very cool Jfusion song in a very Liquid Tension Experiment style that features Tamu's drumming: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oajWlJyOosRqqaM. So you are right-- there is something in the water there.. My conjecture is it comes from the middle earth via the onsen waters.

If you can find the time good sir: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnmUXpiYq9F1itk The quality is not ideal, but this is Guthrie Govan's Japan tour that Senri was asked to perform live together for the first time. The composition 'Erotic Cakes' was based almost entirely on 'bad notes' (apart from rhythm of course) An absolute joy to watch. There is another video out there where he commissioned Senri and the incredibly talented bass player Mohini Dey. Well worth checking out even if only in private.

to perpetuate a stereotype: Asians can do anything, literally anything. Senri is one of the examples of that. I bet if you would put her on a guitar, she would play that without spoofs as well. JK, but for real, I am a big anime fan and the soundtracks of a lot of them are incredible and when you begin to look up the musicians behind them, you realize how much great musicians that country has. Yoko Kanno is probably my forever love... I mean how can you not listen to something like "Tank!" and not be at least bobbing your head or tapping your foot! Might be a great reaction to drums of that as well. That said: Someone up for some DnB videos? I love the Noisia cover from Ben Anderson but there are also a lot of other great drummers out there who occasionally or only play that style... ANdreas Meinhardt, Jojo Mayer also dabbled in it...

Senri is a great drummer arguably the best female in the world. This clip is far from the best. You really see how good she is in solos. Most of the time here it's just keyboards and guitar solos. Really watch the individual clips which highlight her skill to the max. This isnt a great recording either. To get a true idea of her talent, look at her clips when she was only 12,one duelling with Kanade Sato who was only 8 at the time. She is better now of course but was incredible as a pre teen. Unlike Yoyoka and Kanade, she really didnt show her class until aged 10. Both Yoyoka and Kanade were outstanding prodigies at 5 and 6. There is a clip of Kanade barely able to reach the bass pedal playing in a band. Quite astonishing performance. She has great 'feel'. Not as powerful as Yoyoka and Senri but she really is a fine 'touch' jazz specialist. Yes Senri does some nice fills here and her speed in the female field is unsurpassed. She does get erratic at times and loses it on the inverted cymbals but the rest of the time she is outstanding as seen here. Just needs to broaden her repoiotiore to other genres to gain greater recognition.

As long as you know the structure of the piece played, for me jazz improve is fun and easy. That said to do it well it does take a bit of skill. I find this type of drumming more fun because it is less structured than rock. Playing rock for me is too strait forward and gets a bit boring to play. Jazz, funk, and r&b,.
