Thank you to our Alpha patron Joel for ANOTHER banger... damn. This was heavy as hell. For whatever year it was recorded. The original song was 1967 but apparently this performance was from 1974? I dont know. But it was amazing. Stills is one of the best songwriters from this era... every track he's involved with has been a winner in my book. And damn can he shred... him and Neil are lightning together.

This was recorded in 1967. The first part is identical to the studio version on the album, only near the end, whoever created it tacked on a jam that the band had done in some live performance of Bluebird. This version also leaves out the banjo at the tail end that was always a really nice touch on the studio version which they always used to play out on the "Underground" FM radio stations in 1968 or so.

The banjo interlude on Bluebird was iconic. He also put Bluebird Revisited on his second solo album which features horns, a blistering organ from Billy Preston and a powerful vocal from Stills with Crosby singing backing vocals. Awesome in it's own way...

The banjo was played by Charlie Chin, who was a friend of Stills from his days on the folk circuit in NYC. Chin was later in a band produced by Jimi Hendrix and had a Top 40 hit in "Good Old Rock 'n' Roll" in 1969: Cat Mother & The All Night News Boys.

Stephen Stills is an under-rated guitarist. His bootlegged jam with Jimi Hendrix from his basement studio in 1968 shows Stephen keeping up with Jimi amid some loose jams and great back-and-forth playing.

For anyone who wants to delve into the maturity and greatness of Stills as an artist (beyond just CSNY and BS) you need to check out Manassas, particularly the debut double album. I saw them live as a junior in High School and they played the entire album (which I knew by heart) cover to cover. An unbelievably brilliant demonstration of creativity from a single songwriter. I've seen one reaction on you tube, and the creator was literally blown away...

I gotta tell you. This was the music. I was listening to when I was a kid but it just seemed like every band was like this. They were all great. They're all exploring new things. That's weird, incredible. You can just imagine hearing Jethro Tull for the first time. How different they were. The same with C.S.N. C.C.R. Grand Funk, King Crimson, Man the music and the talent was just Pouring out of everywhere. I think Iron Butterfly was really responsible for the drum solos, because after they did theirs it seemed like everybody had to put a drum solo into their act. Sometimes to prove you were a good drummer, to be in a band, you would have to do part of the In-a-gada-da-vita drum solo Just to prove you were a good drummer.

One of my favorite concerts ever. Started with Stills on stage by himself doing solo acoustic stuff. Each member came out, one at a time, and did their solo stuff. Once they were all on stage they did acoustic CSNY stuff. They took a break and came back and did an electric set.

As often happens on these, most of what I would say has already been said by others. So I'll just say ' great f-ing song'. Neil kills it on the electric guitar leads, and Stephen really kills it on the acoustic. And of course great vocals. The jam part they added on is cool, but... :) What a ridiculously incredible year 1967 was for music. Mind boggling, really. As much as I loved music back then, I was 6-7 years old, so there was a lot I didn't appreciate, and I only heard what was on the radio or on the albums my older siblings had. But it gave me a lot of 'new' stuff to discover just a few years later.

So glad you finally got around to listening to Bluebird, one of Stephen Stills special songs he wrote while with Buffalo Springfield. The *other* must listen Stephen Stills Buffalo Springfield song is his tribute to *Grace Slick* of the Jefferson Airplane entitled *Rock & Roll Woman.* His songs about his encounters with women while with Buffalo Springfield are the best. One of them *Questions* was the early version precursor of *Carry On* that CSN recorded & *_it is really excellent_* (great bass line)

In the early part of this, it's Stills on acoustic lead, Neil on electric. Occasionally, you can hear a little sitar-y guitar way back in the mix. That's Doug Hastings, who briefly replaced Neil when he left the band (for the first time). That's the studio section of the recording. Then the live jam kicks in.

It’s not your generation, it’s the oligopolies that control America since the ‘80’s. Back in the ‘60’s you had some small studios run by individuals who allowed artists much more freedom in the studio. This allowed for the wide diversity of music that was produced. The movie industry is much the same. How many “franchises” do we now have, with endless sequels? All because corporations are risk averse. I don’t mean to get political, but monopolistic control destroys competition & creativity. It’s not your generation’s fault.✌️❤️🎶

A big influence on Neil's guitar playing was a guy named Hank Marvin with his band, the Shadows. Jangly guitar, lot of whammy bar, jagged slashing kind of rhythm. Stills grew up in Florida and Costa Rica and spent time in New Orleans. Started out playing acoustic blues and then adding latin styles. His playing is fluid and melodic for the most part. Bigger jazz influence. The other thing is that Stills is always syncopated and Neil is never syncopated. Neil slashes, Stephen bounces. The best Buffalo Springfield album, in some ways, is the first one. Stills was not yet at his peak as a writer and the recording itself was for shit (their managers stupidly decided they were producers), but the arrangements and interplay between the band members is wonderful.

Just listened to the song again on my system 33 1/3 sounds like stills was playing a guild electric guitar. One of many he used. They have a bit of a trouble sound Which adds harmonic, richness, He’s very lyrical on electric guitar, precise and dynamic on acoustic guitar. Neil Young is very precise and amazing on acoustic guitar, they both play in open tunings however, Neil Young is rather erratic in a wonderful way on electric guitar quite different than he approaches acoustic guitar. It’s quite unusual and beautiful.

You should check out the original LP version. I find this longer version interesting, but the original took more thought and creativity. And Stephen's vocal at the end is wonderful. The whole thing was recoded in '67, not '74. It just wasn't released with the long jam section until '74, on a compilation album. Buffalo Springfield had broken up long before '74.

The band was completely finished by the end of 1968...every member was in another band or was a solo artist. They tried a reunion in 1984 but that's it...BS made 3 records with their last one...Last Time Around being mostly cobbled together. Btw...I know you're able to hear the multiple gtr overdubs (like 3-4) in the first 4 minutes are not "live"...the tacked on live section is completely different sounding (levels of instruments, mix of vocals, etc) than the first part.

Great reaction kiddo. Can I suggest a band called "Love." "Gather Round" is a good place to start.

I've never heard this version before. To me it sounds exactly like the 1967 album cut-until the 6 minute mark of your video. It diverges from it the moment Stephen starts yelling and the instrumental jam takes off. The album version has a really cool ending too, but it's completely different. The jam section is great, but I wish there were a version which incorporated both it and the album ending. I love when Stephen starts yelling lyrics from "Leave," one of my favorite songs from their first album, where he does a blazing guitar solo. I'm guessing that this is a 1967 live in the studio take which they neatened up for the album.

This version wasn't on the Again lp in '67. Saw them do Bluebird live three or four times in the 60s and this studio version was rejected because it didn't come close to the excitement of their live performances. It turned up on a compilation lp years after the fact.

Now listen to the studio version, as others have said, to catch the bluegrass-style ending with banjo.... it's really beautiful. This version shows off Stills and Young's electric jam capabilities, but it really takes away from the song as originally presented. BTW, Richey Furay, who you mentioned, later went on to form Poco, another great country-rock band.

I would describe Neil's electric guitar style as primitive. And Stills acoustic style was somewhat primitive and pummeling, but Stills electric style is more smooth. In my humble opinion. I saw CSNY once and they rocked. But Neil and Crazy Horse have a rare magic🔥 The times I saw them were very monumental. Watch their film Year Of The Horse! 🐴

The “wrong” version, since the band themselves thought it so overblown and rambling they refused to release it. Their record company put it out as a lure to get fans to buy their anthology long after the group splintered. You owe it to yourself to do the official one with its beautiful banjo coda.

Bizarre cover for that album. I'm sure Delaney And Bonnie, and Van Morrison, were surprise to find out they were heavy metal. Bizarre version of that song too.
