We continue our journey though "Secret Treaties" thanks to our patron Gary C! So far, side 2 sounds so different then the side 1. I enjoyed "Harvester of Eyes" A lot....

It's 1982, I'm 12 years old, and my friend's older brother is blasting the live version of "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" off of Extraterrestrial Live. I was done, game over.

The Piano interlude at the end is actually the intro for "Flaming Telepaths ", something they found from the 1930's, and placed between the 2 songs. There are no interruptions on Side 2,so you can get the full effect by letting FT and Astronomy play through. And both tunes are Cult Classics, along with Harvester of Eyes..

Yeah, that transition between Flaming Telepaths and Astronomy still does it for me, 50 years later.

Thanks Lee for this walk down memory lane. This album was the soundtrack for 2 of the best years of my life, when my brother and I rented a house together in our early 20s. We had a group of friends, all “cult heads”. BOC was a staple along with Hendrix, Zep, Floyd and Allman Bros Live @ The Fillmore. BOC was under appreciated in general, but not by the hard rockers. We looked at this album as their most “sophisticated”. You looked good when friends appeared at the door with Treaties blaring. If you like their sound, all their albums have something to offer. Notable are Spectres (most melodic), Cultosaurus Erectus (most progressive) and Fire of Unknown Origin (most popish). But Lee, Buck was the heart and main course of the band. There were times I saw him at concerts when he just went into a zone where he seemed to shimmer as his whole body was buffeted by the force of his playing. So fast, without repetition and always on key. Amazing, amazing guitar rides!! Again, thx for the sweet memories and sorry for the ramble. God bless.

The non-band songwriting personnel were, by and large, part of an entire group of friends and musical colleagues, along with the band and Sandy. Patti Smith, Allen Lanier's longtime girlfriend and flatmate, was also part of that scene. The band, over time, increasingly wrote their own lyrics, with more occasional guest-writing appearances from time to time.

On Cagey Cretins Eric Bloom sings the verse and Albert Bouchard sings the chorus. On a side note, it's almost as if they invented the soft verse, loud chorus aka LOUD quiet LOUD formula before the Pixies.

Albert Bouchard had said that’s because they put bits of past songs together to make it all one in Cagey Cretins. And damn if it don’t work amazingly. The main riff can be heard in a Soft White Underbelly tune in the band’s first incarnation in a totally different song.

Alright Lee! Continuing your dive into Blue Oyster Cult waters. Man, BOC is one of my most favorite 70s bands. I've been getting off on them since the 70s actually. From the subject matter of their songs to the music itself, they are the coolest, most unique band. Protometal, progressive, and yes esoteric. It could be the soundtrack of your descent into madness, or just bizarreness. Dig it yeah!!

BOC is one of my all time favorite band and Buck Dharma one of the most underrated guitarists. You can check out so many different songs from them like "The Vigil", "Joan Crawford", "The Alchemist" , "Monsters" or "Nosferatu"! For me they are not really esoteric, but more scary, creepy or dealing with horror.

"Harvester of Eyes". CLASSIC Eric-vocals, and about as far from Reaper as they can get. Maybe "7 Screaming Diz-Busters" is further, but..... Look to the lyrics for Eric's closing, menacing words. 😬 You almost carried onto "Flaming Telepaths", then "Astronomy", and you should. IMO, BOC's best one-two punch. BTW, Albert Bouchard, their original drummer is on vocals, Cagey Cretins.

B O'Cult presented themselves as dark and EVIL. They weren't, that was just their schtick. Buck Dharma (Don Roeser) was a little schmuck from Long Island although a fiery and inventive guitarist. They rocked. I guess they still do. Some of their concepts though..I mean Harvester of Eyes? They were as one critic said "super-knowing". And predictive - Tyranny and Mutation (I played it continuously) is a neat summary of This Modern World. Don't Fear the Reaper valorized suicide. That's pretty sick. But also predictive - suicide is now - what's the word? - oh yeah, "Trending"
