The way this album was divided up, sides 1 & 2 were acoustic, and sides 3 & 4 were electric. It made it very easy to listen to all the way through, as it continued to build energy as it went.

Also this was about the Chicago 7 trial (1969) related to the anti-war demonstrations at the '68 convention, when the judge had one of the 7 on trial--the only black defendant, Bobby Seale, bound and gagged and chained to a chair because he would not keep quiet in his own defense from the defendant's box. There is a very good movie recently about this--The Trial of the Chicago 7 directed by Aaron Sorkin. I remember when it was happening.
@gregcable32507 ай бұрын
There was a police riot when at the orders of Mayor Daley, they beat the protesters while the protesters then chanted, "the whole world is watching!, the whole world is watching!"--have heard that chant recently by some young people who I am sure don't know its origins. The mayhem at the convention outside and the fights inside turned the tide for Nixon and we got 5 more years of the War followed by Watergate.

Chicago is about the very turbulent 1968 Dem Convention in Chicago. The harmonies of David & Graham were so beautiful. David has a freaking gorgeous voice. He could sound like an angel in some heavenly choir or he could rock it out. U may want to consider listening to the suite: 'To the Last Whale-Critical Mass-Wind on the Water' from the great Crosby/Nash album Wind on the Water. 🎵🌊🐳 Glad others have mentioned Songs for Beginners. I heard at a friend's house and was totally captivated by it. I was 13 and went out and bought it w/my allowance $$. (I still have it ) It opened up a whole new musical world for me. I got my hands on every CSNY album I could borrow or buy. I listened to 4 Way Street all the time. What a great live album.

I was in 8th grade in a large Chicago elementary school (north side, not the suburbs) during the Chicago 8 trial. We were following it daily for current events/social studies. All up in it. Mayor Daley was a total SOB. Lots of angry young people. CSN and Y memorialized it for us. The next summer, I had the pleasure of being at Grant Park for a Sly and the Family Stone concert that exploded into full blown riot.... Crazy times.

graham seems awfully good at writing songs like "chicago" and "cathedral". he is a hell of a writer. this year, chicago is gonna get crazier too. DNC is being held there this year just like 68 apparently!

@@L33Reacts we'll see what happens. I don't live back there anymore, but make it back at least once a year. The city has changed immensely since I left. Some really good stuff, some not so good. My area was changing drastically when I was still there. And not for the better. I have no family who stayed in the city anymore. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. History has a habit of repeating.

@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN If you want to make a critical or argumentative point about something, do it on a post of your own - or better yet, stop commenting altogether. You constantly comment on these videos like there are absolute truths about music - and that anyone who likes something you don't is "wrong", instead of having different taste than you (there's about a 99.9% probability you're some MAGAt asshole, considering how binary/dull-witted your comments are).
