Most people don't realize how good he is.. and no double bass drum .. just a fast foot!

IAN PAICE = The very BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@seabud64082 ай бұрын
Saw him during his week long residency with the Buddy Rich Big Band just before Covid struck .. Ronnie Scott’s Club. I don’t think any other rock drummer could have pulled off what he did that night. Amazing. So many great moments. Fav was .. Pick up the pieces by The Average White Band. He smashed a stick, shouted out , grabbed a new one then immediately pulled off one of the best fills I’ve ever heard. Before one of the big band standards he got out a piece of paper with some notes on it .. reminders. He held it up and said .. “This stuff’s complicated you know” .. at which point a guy in the audience sang out the riff to Smoke on the Water. Ian led the laughter from the whole room. 😀 Saw him with Purple in 1972. Still the best gig of my life .. and with Paice Ashton Lord in 1978 .. Glasgow Apollo. At that gig after his solo the crowd stood up cheering and wouldn’t stop . Eventually Tony shouted “Shut the fuck up and sit down”

just a little point - it was a single bass drum, not double in this solo. He used double only for the track Fireball.

@@JasonSayersDrums I thought you would say so :) To me there are a few drummers who deserve to be on the drummers Mt. Rushmore, but Ian will always be the best of them in my opinion.

@@JasonSayersDrumsActually, on this same gig they played Fireball as an encore, and for that the roadies carried an extra bass drum on the stage to be used on that song. Otherwise, just one. Amazing!

Not sure he was playing a double bass drum in the middle of the solo, in the same concert a extra bass drum was added for Fireball.

I've been told this a few times regarding the double bass. I'm now a believer it's a single pedal.

Jason, I recently ran across your page and I appreciate your hearing ability......I was a machinist for 39yrs and I have played drums since 1975. My hearing isn't what it used to be! I have been blessed enough to get to see Buddy Rich up close and personal and Ian Paice twice. They both are almost completely jazz influenced drummers. B.R. obviously! Listen to Deep Purple closely and focus on Ian's stick handling..... He does an amazing 1 handed roll! I still have my 1976 Ludwig 9pc set...
@miikasuominen38453 жыл бұрын
Somebody already mentioned it, but I think Paice really haven't used double bass drums... Well, don't know about anything about drumming, but remember Ian saying about the technique, which he invented, that made it possible to his playing sound like using double bass drums. Beside it, I love him on drums. And he is one of the rare drummers, that you really can recognize, when he is on drums....

Ian is playing a single bass pedal and the buzz rolls are doubles, the drums were recorded on tape which sounds better than digital.

Rather than calling it a Bonham influence... I'd say Gene Krupa and Elvin Jones.... He and Bonham were contemporaries and both very young at the time and I've always heard that Jones influence in both their styles

Should check out Barriemore Barlow; John bonham was a big fan of his even saying "the greatest rock drummer England ever produced" and was even considered by Plant and Page to replace bonham after his death before deciding to end the band!

He played better solo than this one... anyway that was not a double kick...he was that fast with single kick. I don't understand the links with Bonham, Paice was not influenced by him, they started playing the same years... Of the recent years I love the solo on " Speed King (Paice view) " you can find here on KZbin.

My take on the Paice/Bonham comparison is simple. Ian Paice could do everything that Bonham did, but I don’t think Bonham could do everything Ian did. Paice plays like a jazz drummer, using doubles more so than Bonham, and has great SWING !!

You’re obviously kidding talking about a ‘double bass drum’ here on this vid when it’s obvious there is only one bass drum involved..do your homework, please it’s disrespectful to a genius who never used a double bass or double pedals.

Single bas drum, no double bass drum or double pedal, just a very fast foot! Bonzo gets the majority of the plaudits but Paicey is easily as good, possibly even more technical, and could be very funky as well.
