Thank you to our patron Scott for another great pick! This was one of the catchiest damn songs I've ever heard.. And the video was so good! I love these early 80s videos, man. It's so cool to see where the art started (music videos) and such... I think

Funny story: About 12-14 years after this album came out, my friends and I heard that Flock of Seagulls was playing at a local bar, so we went to see them. The band spent nearly the whole night playing new music nobody had heard of. And it didn't even have the same 80's pop synth style. We kept looking at each other and going, "WTF?" Then, near the end, the lead singer said in a clearly bored voice, "Okay, we know why you're all here. You want us to play those hits, right?" And the crowd, which had kind been beat down by the band's lack of excitement, responded with a low-energy "yeah." So then they played "I Ran" and "Space Age Love Song." And the energy was good and it sounded like what we wanted to hear. If the whole show had been like that, we'd have been raving about the experience, but as it worked out, we all just kinda joked about how sad it was that they just seemed more focused on trying to escape their past than anything else.

My bias against 80's synth pop made me hate this song for a long time. Then one day I noticed the drummer, bass player, and guitarist kicked ass in the end.

His hair in the video is not the iconic "flock of seagulls hairstyle" that article was referring to. Look it up to see how wild it was. It came about by accident: the singer was going for a David Bowie inspired 'do and one of his bandmates put his hand on the guy's head and shoved, resulting in the "winged" look that became associated with them. Seriously, words don't do it justice; you have to see it.

Close! Modern music videos kinda came about with MTV with The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star. I Ran was '82. Although, the Beatles did one (April 1965 ) with Help! and Bob Dylan did one called Subterranean Homesick Blues (January 1965).

man, loved this song and so much adjacent new wave stuff from this era, I was probably 13-14 when this came out and it was all I listened to ... until 1983 when I heard Iron Maiden 'Piece of Mind', lol. Then I became a hard core metal head for years and didn't listen to Flock of Seagulls etc. anymore. But it's definitely a genre and era that I've come back to over time as my music dogma started to ease. So much great stuff from the early 80s, but that's the case with music back to the 60s or beyond. You can find a ton of great stuff, this included. Thanks as always for the reaction, Lee.

This song sounded like aliens had landed, back in the day. It was such a new sound for top-10 radio music. And it's funny how people then - and still - refer to it as a synth song. But really, the guitar and bass are the primary instruments throughout. I think it holds up pretty well.

Saw them live. They played 10 songs and song 2 & 10 were this song. The #2 song was a different version of it. My friends & I would make fun (out if respect) of the extremely odd guitar part. The #10 song had various people jump upstage. That was where I saw a grown man with Jerry Garcia hair & beard wearing a faded rainbow onesie and a top hat. This was 2000.

For me with the beginning of New Wave in the late 70's with The Police, Devo, The Cars and others it was an interesting time. I am a rocker, I'm 61, and was into the rock of the 70's, but I didn't close my mind to other music. With the 80's I found a lot of music like this enjoyable and got into it. My music has always been eclectic, the only thing I've never been a fan of is Rap, just not my style.

While you're hitting '80s bands, try Chameleons UK. I recommend the songs "In Shreds", "Second Skin", or "Monkeyland". Probably one of the '80s more underrated bands. They're more of a guitar band, but if you want more true UK new wave synth try anything off the Thomas Dolby album "Golden Age Of Wireless" or OMD's album "Orchestral Maneuvers In The dark". And you should probably hit the Gary Numan song "Cars", I guess it's iconic at this point.

Paul's guitar tone tended to be the standout Flock Of Seagulls sound. You're right. They were so young. Paul ended up having to leave the band pretty after they became popular and extensive touring. Too much wear and tear on one so young.

This is not a bad song, but there are much better synthwave songs. Vienna by Ultravox, Fade To Gray by Visage, Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics, Are Friends Electric? and Cars by Gary Numan, West End Girls and It's A Sin by Pet Shop Boys, Mad World by Tears For Fears, lots of songs by Depeche Mode, Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, ... to name but a few.
