This took me back. I think I may have seen Humble Pie rehearsing for this tour. I was out walking with my cousin and her dog and heard a band playing in a barn near Magdalen Lever in Essex, England. We stuck our heads around the door expecting to be told to 'eff off' but someone, which to this day I believe was Stevie Marriott, said come in man. Zero and I were just warming up when they finished.
@cindyfalstrom72316 ай бұрын
Wow, that's a great story. The Pie did originally rehearse at Magdalen Lever. Although they say he could be a stinker sometimes, I have heard that Steve was usually very kind to the fans. He was a humble, charming man, but didn't like phonies or ass lickers - lol😆

Steve Marriott, lead singer extraordinaire and guitar virtuoso moved from Small Faces (Itchy Coo Park) to Humble Pie and the rest is history! Paired with a young Peter Frampton, they made history as one of the greatest live bands EVER!! This album is solid from start to finish. Steve died way too young in 1991. I was just out of high school in 71 in So. Cal when this came out and I have loved it ever since!!! Check out some of Steve’s later videos from the 80’s after Humble Pie.. extraordinary artist!!!

Although many request this song, you are the only reactor I have seen actually play it. This song is looseley based on a New Oleans blues song by Dr John. This was a highlight of live Pie concerts, never exactly the same since it was a jam. Humble Pie was a fabulous blues/rock band in the early 70's whom too many have never heard. My favorite Pie song is the wonderful "I Wonder", a phenominal blues song with Clem's weeping guitar and Steve's scorching vocals.

Wow Humble Pie. A group that I don't really listen to Anymore. This was the album that they recorded live at the Fillmore East in Greenwich village, New York City.. I lived in Greenwich village from 1969 to 1972 and I ultimately went to the Fillmore East every Friday night for $8.50 per ticket to see some of the greatest groups of all time. It was living there in the village for those 3 years. That was the reason I was able to see so so many groups in such a short period of time and a great period of time.

Thanks for reacting to this. A track that rarely gets an airing and it is shame beacuse it well worth a listen. This version of HP was a band in it's absolute pomp and one of the best of it's time. Steve Marriott grew up a few roads along from me. Our fathers were good friends and went to the same club. One of my best weekends was watching West Ham play and then going to see Humble Pie (with Clem Clemson in for Peter Frampton) down the road from the ground that evening play a gig at the Bingo Hall in the Barking Road. Next day my old man told me to come with him to the 'club', without saying why. I soon found out why as Bill Marriott turned up with his son. Steve didn't stay too long, but long enough for a drink and a few pleasantries. To me he was the ultimate superstar. Saw him years later solo at the Canning Town Tavern, downing a bottle a bottle of Courvoisier Brandy and still killing it on guitar and keys. Even in those reduced concert circumstances a superstar to the end.

One of the better live albums of its kind, imo; before "arena rock" became more a self-parody. And while I really do like the material Humble Pie continued to put out, I think they were diminished by their loss of Frampton. His playing was very idiosyncratic and instantly recognizable. It was a nice contrast to Marriott's more straight-up blues style. I think the creative tension between the two is part of what made the band interesting.

Steve Marriot is a man with a lot of rock history! A great voice (one the the best to emerge from the early 60's) - and was inspiration for Robert Plant.......he was with the Small Faces before humble pie (there are some great songs to listen to from that band) - and when he left they needed both a lead guitarist and a singer - so they ended up getting Ron Wood and Rod Stewart - and you just listened to them - since they became the faces. After Humble Pie his career waned, but live performances by his band Packet of Three is also well worth watching.

New suscriber here. A friend sent me this link as he knew I am a HUGE Humble Pie fan. Love what I heard here and i enjoy your very real style. Look forward to looking at your back catalog and of course hearing more Pie! A few words regarding questions you asked during the video. Although Peter and Greg both sang some verses, the main singer with the incredible voice and range is the legendary Steve Marriott. Steve is regarded by his peers (Plant, Daltry, Bowie, and MANY more) to be the greatest soul/blues/rock singer to come out of Great Britain. Although I love both Humble Pie and Faces, the "mother" group Small Faces were brilliant, creative and way ahead of their times (1965-69). When Steve quit to form Humble Pie w/Frampton, the remaining 3 Sf's took on Ron Wood for guitar and Rod Stewart for vocals to replace Steve. They then changed their name from Small Faces (because they were all 5'6" or less) to Faces as they weren't small anymore!! ROCK ON as Steve would say !!

There are 2 YT videos of the Pie playing this song live in case anyone wants to see who's playing/singing what parts. IMO , neither are as good as the live albums. The first is posted by "Reeling In the Years" and though live, it is is recorded in a studio, so doesn't have the wonderful audience feel. The other one is much different though, shorter and a bit different than that shown here. It is a B&W 1969 live concert video from the Bilsen (Belgium) jazz festival. I LOVE this video, it is priceless at this is the earliest Humble Pie on their first tour. OMG!!! Steve is sooosoulful it gives me goosebumps - Check it out, you won't regret it.

"Gris Gris" is pronounced "gree gree". It's a Cajun French term that means using voodoo or black magic on someone, particularly with charms or amulets. Dr. John was a fantastic piano player, his one big hit was "Right Place, Wrong Time" which I highly recommend if you haven't heard before. ☮️

One of the best live album performances on record from that era. When you are done with this you should look at Live at the Whisky-a-Go-Go from 1969. This album is a downtempo unplugged performance (just as good) and offers "Guilded Splinters in that relaxed format. It works rally well because of the bands ability to interact with the crowd. Frampton left the band a few months later (Sep '71) and was replaced by another great guitarist and well suited vocalist Dave (Clem) Clempson from Colosseum. Clem's efforts shine on the Colosseum Live album, also from 1971, favorites of mine being "Lost Angeles" and" Skelington". FYI.

According to Jerry Shirley's memoir, Steve was VERY upset when Peter left, then he became angry and spoke some unkind words towards Peter. However, a little later, they made up and on one of Peter's solo albums - "Frampton" I think - the cover features Peter wearing a tee shirt with Steve's face on it - sweet....
