what is amazing is when most of those top guitarists of all time Alex is either left off the list or not in the top 20 yet Neil is at the top of every list for drummers and Geddy at or near the top for Bass players did they not listen to Alex ?

Alex is CRIMINALLY underrated. Any other guitarist would probably be swallowed up within Neil and Geddy's musicianship. But he more than holds his own within the Triad. Three brilliant artists in perfect symmetry.

The REAL COOLEST thing about this version is that it was so ahead of their technology laden days and ALL THAT SOUND and effects were 95% THEM and their playing ability. I’ll give 5% to the amplification and couple of pedals Alex had back then but no stacks of keyboards, computers, midi, samples and mixing machines for adding special effects and such. Truly remarkable stuff.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎸🥇🇨🇦🎼

They’ve always put on outstanding live performances . Their showmanship matched their musical prowess! The crowd was so into it, and the closest thing to an asshole was some happy drunk dude screaming out the name of his favourite song. 😂

Btw, when it may not seem like Alex is doing as much like in the ambient section, what he's doing though is quite and just beautifully expressive, he is so good at those volume swells on the electric guitar. I think it's the first of the two main guitar solos in La Villa Strangiato that also starts off with the volume swells. He really is a master at it.

Alex doing soundscapes in the middle of this also reminds me of something like Ash Ra Tempel. Very krautrockish. I suppose, this kinda informed the intro of Xanadu. Too bad, he never got the chance to do this more often.

First Rush I ever heard my buddy Dave Ludwig said to me one morning at the bus stop, I've got to play you something after school. One listen and I was all in on being a RUSH fan and still am at 60. Long live Rush. P.S in the 70's they were one of the loudest bands I've ever heard.

No kidding about the loud, I saw Rush many times, and I attribute some of my hearing loss to having been at those concerts (OK, being in the field artillery didn't help either). You would walk out of the arena shouting at your friends at the top of your lungs so they could understand you, and passersby would look at you like you were crazy people.

there is a band that toured with them back in the day, Max Webster with Kim Mitchell from Toronto. Pye Dubois collaborated with Neil on song writing for both bands, and they put out a lot of great radio hits back then. Max had a monster hit in 1980 called Battle Scar. It has a surprise that you, yes YOU, will really like. Don' research it that'll totally spoil it

Back in the day Lee this was our "favorite" Rush song to see and hear Live and just like this Live album with "In The End" after it !! 👍🎶 They were just amazing concert songs, so Atmospheric with all playing at their musical height during this early period and just like the photos with this album they had that great large White carpet laid out and that moody Purple stage lighting it set that mood so great with this song ! ✌🎸🥁🎸🎼

You mentioned that there was so much "bite" in the 70s. As a teenager during that time, and Western Canadian, Rush was a "thing" and I was into them, as was my younger brother. The thing about that time was that there were no worries, other than what was immediately in front of you. Sure, I was aware of what was going on in Vietnam, watching the news and seeing how many Americans had died that day, but other than those kinds of things, and the death of someone you knew, stuff like that, life was mostly a cycle of activities and living, which included, dances, sports, etc., activities which were as regular as the seasons. This freedom and continuity in life, plus other factors which are more complicated, allowed artists to express themselves like at no other time. There was little censorship but also good manners, for the most part. We have too many worries these days, So many are unnecessary and which get in the way of living and creating. Thanks for your, always, interesting perspective.

Lee, fee free to listen to the whole ATWAS live album! The songs are all improvements on the original studio versions, certainly in terms of energy and volume! But, the "Working Man/Finding My Way/Drum Solo" track on the album is a MONSTER! Neil's 1976 solo is fierce and thunderous!! Do it, brother!

I didn't notice all that on the record." after seeing them in Jersey 2x. 😂 Its all there of course, but live, its a whole new level. 🤔 Necromancer, The Cygnus Books.... 😍 all sounded amazing Live and made me love those songs even more. 😏 I never listened to Necro on the Album or sang along if it played at a friends house while doing Homework. 😊🐰

The thing with Neil even at his prime he was humble enough to to still seek out lessons, With Freddy Grubber and Peter Erskine , He talked about how he walked to Peters house like a thirteen year old with his sticks in his hand and full of excitement , He talked about how he learnt from Some tribal African drummers as he toured around Africa ,

Time flies is so right. It's hard to believe it is almost 50 years since I walked into my local record store and used my 16th birthday record token to buy this album based purely on the cover. From the opening riff of Bastille Day I was a Rush fan. A few weeks later I used my Christmas record token to buy "2112". Where did the years go? It seems like yesterday.

This song is a transition from the early, Led Zep knock off days to the proto-prog metal later 70's. Alex's solo bit is directly inspired by Jimmy Page's space-y features with the bow and delay unit during LZ's concerts. Stoner rock lives, maaaaaan! 😆

Yes, Rush definitely had more energy and edge to their music in the early years, in more songs, but they do have more energy and edge and more metal again in their later albums starting in the mid 90's through to the last album in 2012. Like in the 70's, they use keyboards/synths more sparingly and once again have much more lead guitar from Alex and much more bass guitar from Geddy. Both mad scientists of guitars again. Of course Neil is always the hyper-mad master drummer through it all.
