Ace uses the toggle switch as a kill switch. Of his 3 pickups, only the bridge is wired up. Ace is one of a kind.

This was the first song Ace wrote for KISS. He wrote it on the subway on the way home from rehearsal. He was so insecure about his voice compared to Paul, Gene and Peter that he refused to sing it, even though they tried to talk him into it. So ironically, the only member of the band that didn't drink, Gene, sang the song.

The toggle switch is turning the pick up off and on, or toggling between the 2. You can use it to switch between two pickups and if he turns the volume off one then it is silent when he switches.🎸

Actually the switch is not on and off in and of itself but he has the other pickups turned off, just the bridge pickup is on. That’s what gives the effekt.

This is the 96'-97' Reunion Tour & Peter has a slightly different drum set up more jazz etc. etc.& not a giant kit as in the 70's....this was a very proud moment for KISS ARMY , it had been 15 years since the original KISS had toured...right after KISS UNPLUGGED...God bless KISS 1973 - 2023

This was my favorite KISS song way back when. My cousins had a great band back in the 70’s and covered this song. I saw them live in 1983 at El Paso, Texas on their 10th Anniversary Tour. The Plasmatics opened for them. Wendy O. Williams the lead singer of The Plasmatics passed away on April 6, 1998 at 48 years of age by a self inflicted gunshot wound. 😢 R.I.P. Wendy. 😢🤘🏻📺

This was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. And to be completely fair most kiss songs aren’t very challenging to play. Not to say it doesn’t rock because it does. That’s why I’ve always loved jamming to kiss. It’s simple. It’s easy. But it’s perfect and it rocks.

Think you’re fired up now for KISS. Can you imagine what it was like for us kids in the 70’ and just trying to see what was up with the band through magazine articles, pics and posters to rip out of magazines to put up on our walls! The excitement of when they were on a TV show and checking the TV Guide looking for KISS to be on TV. That was the only way you could get new images or info on what was our lives back then! Today everything is on the internet and takes two seconds to find and watch. I’m seeing stuff I’ve never seen as a kid. What a time to be alive. Ace wrote Cold Gin for the first Kiss album. Gene wrote the pre-solo instrumental break, although he didn't get songwriting credit. Ace was a reluctant singer so didn't take a lead vocal until the 6th studio album, Love Gun. Gene sang Cold Gin originally but then on the 1980 tour Ace started singing the 2nd verse as he does here from the 1996 reunion tour.

Peter Criss was never a double bass drum player. He always played a single bass drum kit. Eric Carr, when he replaced Peter, started the double bass kit and Eric Singer also had a double bass kit. AS a guitarist, I always like paying Cold Gin, it's not really too difficult to play, but it's catchy.

The toggle switch is switching from one pickup to the other. He has the volume off on one of his pickups so that the toggle basically acts as an on/off switch for his volume. I did the exact same thing when my band played this song. It's an easier song and a lot of fun to play

What he's doing is turning the volume of his neck pickup to zero, and his bridge pickup to 10, and just switching back and forth like a kill switch. These days, they use a kill switch. It did not exist back then. Speaking of Killswitch unless you've already done him I would definitely recommend that you do Buckethead - Soothsayer. This guitar skills will blow your mind 😮. Cheers!

This is the 1996-97 reunion tour of the all four original members. Kicked off with its first full (and fully filmed) show in Detroit Tiger Stadium which they sold out in about 45 minutes. It was absolutely epic. Hard to go wrong with video from any show on this tour. But if you want to watch the best Detroit rock city version of 19 96-2000 era, I would definitely check out “New Jersey Meadowlands 2000 Detroit Rock City”. It was perfection IMO. Ps: little trivia though… By that time Ace and Peter were back to their antics and you can even see Paul get frustrated at one point just before the main guitar solo of the song where Ace was moving too slowly to get In his position and Paul pretty assertively points him forward as if to say open “move your ass”. But, of course, and typically fashion he moved like a sloth, and then killed the guitar solo!

If I'm not mistaken, this looks like a show during the reunion tours mid to late 90's. Peter had a condensed offset kit(single kick) I think. My last time seeing them live Boston Garden "99". Ace was hammered(no kidding) and it was close to New years so he yelled out a "Happy F#$%in New Year" halfway into the show. My best frnd and I pushing 40's, started laughing......."Oh Ace.....never change".

I got into the scene when I moved in with a friend who had a radio show on the local university campus and started working for his band then got picked up by a local sound company,as NZ is such a small country my name got passed around and went freelance working for other places doing international stage work and doing lighting stage setting...worked for big acts like motorhead,anthrax Megadeth, MC Hammer, AC/DC, midnight oil, Shihad/ pacifier plus many more but the money was enough to pay the bills...so now I trap fur for a living as my age prevents me getting a full time job despite all my qualifications in many types of work. Cold Gin was written by Ace Frehley actually but he didn't want to sing at the time so Gene sang it. I always found it ironic how someone so against alcohol sung about alcohol so when i found out this was actually ace's song, it made a whole lot of sense. similar to Deuce, this is a banger of a song. Absolutely love this song.

He has double humbucker pickups with two volume knobs. You just turn down the volume knob on your neck pickup and then you just hit a chord and flip your toggle to get the echo effect. He made this his trademark. The Toggle switch just flips from Rhythm/neck pickups to downward/lead pickups in which that's where he always keeps it all the time anyway.

On a Les Paul you can turn the neck pickup volume all the way down and use the Pick up selector as a kill switch! I think Ace was one of the first player’s that did this. Ace was doing it in the 70s

Peter never used double bass that's just a configuration people use where you got your two main Tom's on a rack to the left of your bass drum which is just a floating bass drum and that way he had the ability to add more symbols to that area and bring in those big tomtom's above his floor toms

My favorite Kiss Song... finally :) So regarding Aces playing... he was self taught, so his style is not very technical, and all originally his.. The hammer ons/offs are not super hard, but it is difficult to make them sound good and fit the play. Again, historically he is not as technical as say... Eddie, Rhodes etc who were classically trained and music students. He did all his playing by ear and feel. As far as the toggle... it was toggling between pickups. I don't know the configuration of that particular guitar, but he often had a setup wtih 3 showing, but one was a blank with one or two other active pickups. His solos were done with a specially designed one he did himself that had the smoke pack built into the pickup bay that he would trigger with the toggle to start the smoke effect. If you watch a lot of his live stuff, he also did quite a bit of feedback and harmonic play live. Some on the recordings but much more live. While not considered one of the great talents at Lead, he was original and inspired a ton of youngsters to pick it up. He even held his picks oddly :) I can't count the number of people doing breakdowns of his play that have pointed that out. Anyway, another good vid. See if you can find Parasite or 2000 Man... those are also great Ace songs.

I guess I say this with all the KISS songs you've covered, but this is definitely one of my favorites. This was from the reunion tour and they all just sounded so great. You could tell they'd been rehearsing a lot and were pretty tight. Wish they could have all kept it together longer with the original four. Nothing against the others who've played in the band over the years. They have all been great in their own ways but my favorite KISS memories will always be from the original KISS fab four.

The toggle switch is to toggle between the pick ups. But Ace disconnects two of the three pick ups because he only ever uses one of them. So he can quickly shut off his guitar by pushing the toggle switch up, to select a dead pick up. He can get that effect by turning on and off the pick up while playing a sustained note or chord, like flipping a light switch on and off.

Peter was known for these style tom fills, and many of their early songs had little solo drum parts written in them. They were masters of short memorable guitar riffs. This song is pretty easy on guitar, but is just so catchy and memorable! As you like Kiss so much - you should check out their main competition in the early days - the New York Dolls. Very much the same style of music. Early 70s NY rock & roll! edit**Be sure to listen to original 70s New York Dolls not the reformed version with different band members

I would reallllly dig it if you did World Without Heroes, It is s Simmons song and so different from anything you have played here when he sings. It is from Music From the Elder, which was supposed to have been a concept album for a film that never happened. While a lot of KISS fans dis the album, is has some solid songs on it. This is one.

If you turn the volume on one pickup down to zero (in Ace's case the Neck) then in the middle position it cuts out both pickups. So Ace is flicking the toggle between middle (both off) and the Bridge pickup (on) Ace also has one of his three pickup guitars here, but the idea works the same. I've also heard various statements on how the smoking guitar was set up, one being where the neck pickup is a halogen light, and the middle was a disguised smoke bomb, these operated one each by the neck volume and tone controls. If this is the case Ace is literally disconnecting the bridge p'up from the circuit. As some are reporting here, it's a simple on off. You just don't get the same effect with both pickups still turned up.

Peter Criss at this point is just a shell of his former playing self........Same with Ace......While I love Ace, love everything about him, his playing quit progressing in the late 70's early 80's. I think the serious car crash he was in had something to do with his playing ability.....as well as his "Lifestyle"........but he's still here, the one and only Space Ace.

Not to take away from the greatness of KISS, but you need to check out some of Queensryche unplugged. Della Brown I Will Remember The Killing Words. You being a drummer, Scott Rockenfield was amazing for them. Very overlooked but great. Just watch the 1st 60 seconds of Della Brown an decide. You wont be dissapointed.

That middle riff that you (and everyone else) loves so much, that Gene wrote (which has already been pointed out) isn’t hard or difficult. Very little in the Kiss catalogue is. It sounds really cool though. And yeah, those faster parts are hammer ons and pull-offs.

It was sad to see Peter go from Pearl Drums to DW after the worldwide tour but those Pearl Drums that he used on the reunion tour when they first started out 9697 did not sound good to me at all it was a smart move going to DW drums and he sounded a lot better on them too I mean the Psycho Circus tour he was on fire I remember seeing them in Nashville in 99 and he did a drum solo that just blew my mind
