This was cool - something about the bad recording combined with the discovery of an amazing performance that takes me back to my youth. When bootlegs were sought after. This was a diamond literally in the rough.

So envious of that 'Bursting Out' box set! I bought the double LP in the late 70's for a dollar at a yard sale. There was some kind of "chip" or other debris stuck to one of the album sides, which caused the needle to jump right off the record. I took a pointy hobby knife and a magnifying glass and did some surgery. I gently pried up with the tip of the blade, 'till the "chip" popped free and flew up off the vinyl. The seperation was clean, and I had a perfect record after that. Still in my collection.

I've never heard John's bass that far upfront before, loved it

indeed. very deep, rough cut. been listening to the who for 45 years... never heard that version. wow. kind of thing where i imagine them blowing the doors off a little venue, everyone's jaw agape.

Primitive recording. Very interesting Who lore. It’s nice that you have Beatles fans at home, Lee!

I still dare to put my opinion. I really like the Who and it's a treat to be on Wednesday. However, many do not dare to go see the Who Live after Keith's death and yet, they were excellent afterwards and are still excellent recently. Trust me, it's worth watching. For example: the exceptional version of "Magic bus" recorded at the RAH in London in 2000 or the Tommy Overture live in 1989 or the Quadrophenia tour in 2013 and live 2015 Hyde park and the last Tour with Orchestra... To limit the Who to the Keith Moon period, even if it was gigantic, is to forget a beautiful side of the Who who never stopped performing.

Such an interesting version. Always great to hear stuff from ‘68. Not much of it out there. I concur the sound is abysmal, yet the energy is definitely clear. I wish there was more video footage from ‘67-‘68.

The story is that John hated Magic Bus. The bass line was basically a drone of a couple of notes.

Cool thank you! I always forget that my generation came out in 65 and they were popular by the time this show happened. Sucks the audio wasn’t better but it’s a bootleg what can you do
@brianwacker91113 ай бұрын
That was probably an audience recording, most soundboard tapes sound a lot clearer.

Good bootleg, I enjoyed it, I have a couple of Hendrix bootlegs, its interesting to hear it how it was in the audience.

One o' my biggest regrets is I passed on the opportunity to see The Who live in 1968. I made up for that bad decision by seein' The Jimi Hendrix Experience the same year.

When Pete wrote Magic Bus he managed to capture the whole essence of when we were teens, sitting up front on a red double dekker on the way to a girlfriends house. It's just bloody amazing like a time machine, it's how friends and I thought and felt, and yes, I would willingly have paid 100 English pounds even if it meant saving up for 6 months and going without smokes.

Not all bootleg’s are bad. Some are unlistenable, some are merely ‘ok’…, but some are perfection. What we heard here was definitely ‘ok-listenable’. If u wanna hear a Who boot that is aural, mind blowing, ear melting perfection….? I would choose any song from ‘Philadelphia 1973’…, recorded during the North American “Quadrophenia-Fallout Shelter” tour of ‘73. I would start with “(Can You See) The Real Me” from this show….., Full Tilt right off the bat…, you’ll immediately see (hear) what I mean. It can be found on KZbin. I’m not a patreon, just a huge Who fan/historian. Just tryna to help.., my two cents. ✌️

Cool Bro, check out their live performance from Tanglewood 1970, decent footage with great sound. there are so many great album deep cuts as well, the Odds and Sodds record has Pure And Easy, The Naked Eye, Put The Money Down, among others that are most excellent.

If you had a good tape recorder, they weren't too bad, but until the days of smart phone recording came around, they used to search you for recording devices when you went in and a good recorder was hard to conceal.
@TheHogsEarReport3 ай бұрын
Plain and simple, the Who were always better live. If you really listen to the "performance" given here, rather than focusing on the bad sound quality, you will hear Who gold! A big difference between this live version of Magic Bus and the studio version.

It's funny, when this was new I didn't care for it compared to other Who songs. Somewhere along the way it's moved up to the top over the years (The Live at Leeds version is best in my opinion though!) Edit: Most bootlegs that I heard weren't great sound quality. Many were recorded on small cassette recorders. Some were done through sound boards so they sounded fine. The grateful Dead always let their fans tap into the soundboard. I was able to look up my very first Dead concert online and found a recording of it. It was pretty crappy though, haha!

It was 1968 and I was in my parent's car and adjusted the radio dial until this song came up. They hated it. I mean REALLY hated it. So, it must be good I thought. (of course the radio was playing the actual record)
