Peter is a fantastic artist in his own right. His songwriting developed massively over the years, since he began his solo career in 1977. Don't Give Up is an absolutely beautiful tune. Even his old bandmate Phil loves it, so much so that he wished he'd written it. 😁 All his former bandmates support him. Tony Banks loves his third and fourth solo albums. 🙂 Mike wished he'd been able to come up with the riff for Solsbury Hill. 😁 Which he eventually played, once at a Steve Hackett charity gig with Peter and once at the 1982 Milton Keynes Genesis reunion gig, where in turn Peter played drums alongside Chester Thompson for Turn It On Again. 🙂

I love these - an artist who’s been dear to me for 40 years. That said, Don’t Give Up was so overplayed and on the TV all the time back then, I’m a little over it. The bass is always a treat, though. Saw him do Mercy Street live in 1986. The very end of that song really gets me ❤❤

That's true. He started off as a drummer in a couple of school bands, but then he graduated more and more into singing, writing and creating soundscapes. 🙂 When Phil came to audition for Genesis, Peter knew that as soon as he sat down on the stool, he was the one. And both of them have been close friends and each other's supporters ever since. He even came to the very last Genesis show in London as part of the audience. 🙂

Gabriel wrote Digging in the Dirt during a period of personal introspection and therapy, following a divorce and a breakup with actress Rosanna Arquette. The lyrics talk about digging into the past to uncover and address emotional wounds (makes sense to show him "screaming" later in the song). Gabriel was also inspired by his research into the psychological makeup of murderers to better understand his own behaviors.

Great reactions Lee!! The video for Don't Give Up, is the perfect example of 'less is more' - it didn't need a big production - why? Because the visual of the eclipse perfectly portrays the lyrics! His world is getting darker and darker - light is being extinguished, all the while she's telling him not to give up, he's loved, he's needed...then the eclipse ends, and there is light again! Brilliant in it's simplicity! The album 'So' has a great balance of up and down beat songs! Sledgehammer, Red Rain (which you should check), That Voice Again, In Your Eyes, Big Time are definitely on the up. Don't Give Up, Mercy Street are opposite. Digging In The Dirt is a fantastic tune! The video for that is bonkers! HIGHLY suggest Blood Of Eden from that same album (duet with Sinead O'Conner (RIP)). One thing that cannot be said of Gabriel - he's no one-trick pony! Always pushing the envelope in sound & composition. Embraces all the world music sounds! Cheers.

"Mercy Street" is the best song on "So". The way that Peter Gabriel integrates Ann Sexton's poetry into his own is stunning, and where else will you find a Triangle solo instead of a guitar solo? (Umm, well, actually in Gabriel's own "Solsbury Hill", I guess.) I urge you to look up the video of Gabriel live in Athens, in 1987. Watch and react to two songs in a row: "No Self Control" followed immediately by "Mercy Street". Peter's theatrical versions are not merely a musician playing before an audience. They are transformations of his songs into experiences that will transform the audience, including you. Oh, and since you already like "Lay Your Hands on Me", watch how he performs it live, also in Athens 1987. BTW, after he released this song, a half dozen or more other musicians, some already famous, copied the title for their own songs, hoping that the aura would lend their tracks some power. Many other singers also copied Peter's performance "move", which you will see in this live show, but they all do it without the context that Peter gives his move, without the deep and meaningful background that "Lay Your Hands on Me" creates. Peter Gabriel, though, has been using this performance move since his Genesis days, to one degree or another. Good job, fellow. --OronOfMontreal

I have 15,000 songs (aka my entire CD collection) on there that have no need for streaming or an internet connection. Plus better sound! You’re not missing much without the BluRay. It has the bright-side and dark-side mixes in stereo and the in-side mix in Dolby Atmosphere. And each song just has a still photo for its duration. I bought the triple disc set from Amazon just because the price was briefly so good. Having been a fan of Gabriel from his Genesis days and throughout the duration of his solo career, my advancingly aged ears can’t discern a lot of difference from each mix, to be honest. But I’ve only listened to all 3 a couple of times! Side note: When ripping the 2 CDs all the wrong songs titles came up from some band I had never heard of. Had to manually change them all to the proper names. Apparently it’s a known metadata issue with the discs which doesn’t affect their sound.
