I'm glad you moved this beautiful performance to the top of your long list of requests. It is my single favorite concert moment. Peter is my musical hero. His selfless global humanitarian work is as meaningful as his music catalog. I was really distressed when he left Genesis, but i'm so glad he did for several reasons. If you are feeling down about life, his video duet with Kate Bush for "Don't Give Up" will inspire you. So much more I want to say! 😊

You mentioned the infuence of world music... I don;t know if you realise it but Peter was one of the people to start the Western interest in it.... He started the W.O.M.A.D. festival in Britain in 1980.... In fact he sunk so much money into it that Genesis got back together with Peter as the front man again to put some money back into his pocket. And it is STILL going... He is truly an inclusive artist. I was lucky to see him in 2013 with the drummer, guitarist and bassist on the stage here when he toured the anniversary of the SO album.... They were also his base band on the album. Peter is one of the most innovative musicians I know.... He even had a PC game back out on the 90's I think... back in the early days of computers... And you were able to re-mix a bundle of his songs. Keep on Rocking Lee..... And watch more Peter live or at least listen to the album tracks.

Peter Gabriel introduced Third-World music to the Western World, with his 1980 and 1982 albums, both heavily influenced by his travels through Africa and South America. The song "Biko" from 1980 not only brought African polyrhythms to the West, but changed world politics by decrying South Africa's Apartheid horrors. He started it all, and then went further by creating and producing the annual WOMAD Festival, World of Music, Arts and Dance.

Yes but not the only.😉 Remain in Light by Talking Heads was also released 1980 took the music world by storm fusing Fela / Afro-Beat polyrhythms with funk and electronics. Their first was I Zimbra in 1979. Library of Congress deemed it culturally, historically, artistically significant and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

This song is featured in the movie called “Say Anything” starring John Cusack and directed by Cameron Crowe. Many people believe it’s the greatest use of a pop song in movie history. Peter Gabriel himself always mentions that movie in any interview in which this song comes up. if you’ve never seen it you’re in for a treat. I’ve seen polls that say the John Cusack character is the ‘greatest boyfriend’ in history of movies, and the ending of this movie is my favorite of all of the hundreds of movies I’ve seen in my life.

Bassist Tony Levin was also a member of King Crimson, one of the first and finest of Progressive Rock bands. Levin, in the late 1970s, was one of the first musicians to play and record on the Chapman Stick, when it was still largely unknown to the public. He is one of the most inventive and ingenious bassists ever.

We had been building the stages for a month, I had been awake 96 hours, mostly 105ft in the air, keeping the roof system together.Ti say I was Exhausted doesn't begin to cover it. This tour has become legendary for obvious reasons 😎 This song and Shaking the Tree especially. It SLAYS me that I missed it, but, you know - sometimes life demands attention. These audiences remember this for the rest of their lives, you’re absolutely right about all the world’s cultures sharing beauty and joy and kindness and yes: love. German filmmaker Wim Wenders wrote that dreams are the soul singing to itself. And the arts are the human soul singing out loud: the arts predate LANGUAGE! I’ve a musician friend who still goes to see Gabriel live tours including just last year and says he’s still great.

the "black haired lady" is Paula Cole... she actually had a couple of pretty big hits, probably best known is "where have all the cowboys gone". but in this context, she's just one part of a very complex whole. I totally agree... this is the life they don't tell you about, the one we should concentrate on... what it can be. it gives me hope for the world when little else does. oh dear... dark and cheezy at the same time. anyway, nice reaction... another excuse to check out an amazing track. thanks!

It always amuses me that there are so many connections between prog bands. The bass player here is Tony Levin, playing for Genesis founding member Peter Gabriel. Levin was also the bassist for Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (a spinoff of Yes), as well as being a prominent member of King Crimson off and on since 1981 (along with Adrian Belew, the dress-wearing guitarist from Zappa's "Punky's Whips"). He was also the first choice for Mahavishnu Orchestra, but he turned it down. And he was in a supergroup with Terry Bozzio.

PG developed an interest in African music in the late 70's (mainly because he's always been a drummer himself at heart), although African music had been a presence in the UK for years, through groups like Osibisa and musicians like Rebop Kwaku Baah who had played with the band Traffic. Peter's interest in promoting musicians from 'the third world' prompted him to found WOMAD in 1980. It nearly bankrupted him, but it's why he brought them along on his tours all throughout the 80's. In the 90's his interest in world music was sort of replaced with a fascination with emerging technologies, especially those around communication. It's one reason his albums take so long, is he's doing all this personal R&D work that then goes into his new music.

A couple of things… Peter Gabriel started out as a drummer… so his career is a testament to rhythms. (His third solo album, he took the cymbals away from Phil Collins and other drummers for the whole album). Check out “Rhythm Of The Heat” or “Intruder”… His live work is ALWAYS phenomenal… his performance with GENESIS on “The Musical Box” from The Midnight Special is mesmerizing. Amen to your closing rant.

Hey dude, late to this one but thanks for your great reaction and beautiful comments regarding how similar we are as humans. If you want another great Peter Gabriel performance, he wrote COME TALK TO ME to his daughter, who was a young girl at the time. Peter was going through a divorce, and his daughter, unable to process her emotions, stopped talking to him. He wrote the song to let her know that it had nothing to do with how much he loved her and that he missed talking to her. Years later, after they made amends, she became a singer herself and joined him onstage to sing the song together at this 2004 concert in Bruxelles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anuUmIqDgceJbZI Alternatively, here's the version of song from the Secret World concert, it's the opening song performed with Paula Cole instead (both versions are worth checking out IMO for different reasons) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIOvm6OOgaqjZ6M

I hear you - the world is a very scary place right now, and not just in the US but here in the UK too, and neither of our countries have it bad compared to the majority (at least materially). But then you get moments like this, where you can see real humanity, and what people can do together. We just need to stop putting the sociopaths in charge IMO and we can sort things out more sensibly! PG really cares about people and the world. He has been a long-time supporter and promoter of Amnesty International, and started the WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) festivals. I finally got to see him live for the first time this year. He manages the amazing trick of putting on a huge multimedia show which nevertheless feels very intimate (it probably helps that it started with a group of musicians gathering around a campfire). He told us that he was actually an avatar, because he wanted to spend the time lying in the sun, but that unlike most artists he was using the tech to make himself look 20 years older and fatter, so he's definitely not lost his sense of humour! Many people have suggested _Biko_ next, his song about the South African anti-apartheid activist of that name. I agree - it was the show closer, and was a very powerful way to end it. Enjoy!

I wanted to leave a rather lengthy post but perhaps I will add more later, for now I just wanted to say that the female singer named Paula Cole who was best know for a song in the 80's, that no where nearly showed her vocal abilities IMHO called Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? You may want to check it out because it is a great song, nonetheless. And yes! Truly a creative genius! Thanks for this! Tony Levin on the cream colored bass. Surprised you didn't recognize him.

I honestly prefer the studio version of the song (I just think it does a better job of highlighting Peter's voice), but this is a gorgeous performance nonetheless!

"In your eyes' has that African percussive feel - great music. Very happy. I can see you really enjoying this. Should listen to Peter Gabriel's song 'Sledgehammer' with the original video clip - what great music against a strange video. I love it.

I got very emotional the 1st time I saw this video. One of the most joyous live performances I've ever seen. How lucky were the people who saw that tour!? I HIGHLY recommend Shaking The Tree from this same Secret Live tour video, along with Red Rain. Both are simply epic and amazing like this one is!

Great track. You should have a listen to Peter and Kate Bush’s duet. ‘Don’t Give Up’. That’s a great song with a fab’. Video too. 🎶❤️🎶
