The bit about covering a difficult song applies with any instrument. I can write things that are so much more intricate than I could pick up on quickly while learning someone else's part. Sometimes just goofing off jamming, you can stumble on a cool sounding part that it would be difficult to even explain or count for someone, and you just do it by feel.
@coversandcommentary4 ай бұрын
Absolutely! That's way better said than how I was trying to say it!

@@nickjman1987 also, i've written some crazy stuff in DAW and then went to learn it on guitar, melodies or riffs I'd never get to fiddling around or improvising/trying organically. A side-effect is that I forget a lot of those fingerings or songs within a week of recording them. Very technical songs with 10000 notes or difficult fingerings can have the same effect. I can show a recording of me playing it quite well a month ago, but ask me to play it now and it'll seem like I deepfaked myself onto a much more proficient guitar player for the video lol. Such a large part of music playing (especially at higher levels) really comes down to muscle memory and being well-practiced and rehearsed. I read an interview of Polyphia where the members said they all (have to) practice 1-2 months in advance of their tours, and there's no space for improvisation given their harmonies and tight/dense compositions.
@alexhoyt95914 ай бұрын
also, what's really awesome about the is performance is you can see at the beginning he's super rigid and trying to play it perfect, but by the end you can see he's got the feel a little more and can really let loose a little more

Nice!! Definitely one of the better reaction videos to this that I've seen. :). The whole time you were obsessing about the snares, I'm like, "just hang on, he puts them on in a minute.." Heh. And when he says "The vocals help" and you're like "nope, I don't think they will.." Heh. Same.

Dennis Chambers played Schism on Drumeo, but it was one of the videos where the drum track is missing and the drummer does their own interpretation.

the odd time signatures are bad enough but Danny Carey makes it even more complex by slapping polyrhythms on it as well

Oh, there is actually a similar video where Jordan Rudess did this same thing. It was friggin cool.
@MikeTaffet4 ай бұрын
The funny thing about Tool songs is that if you don’t worry about time signatures and instead memorize the melody, it all sort of falls into place. “Don’t count it, just feel it”. Then again I’m a guitarist lol
@mapexzildjian63614 ай бұрын
You're right, I have to feel what I'm playing. I never count it. But, I do have to know the count "the code" before I can play it, to feel it. ...does that make any sense?

@@coversandcommentary i never dissed Portnoy, it's Carey i dont understand why he's in high regards
@coversandcommentary4 ай бұрын
Oh! Got it! I’d guess it’s probably because of his surgical precision and consistent tendency to write songs with complex and odd time signatures. There are plenty of drummers who do that, but Tool kind of has a huge and dedicated following and probably extends to each member. But drummers lock in on Carey.
@AgenteusaRR4 ай бұрын
@@coversandcommentary Loved your gentleman response :P +1 I know what you mean, but if you want to take composition into this conversation, its a different beast. For instance , to me Stevie Ray was the best raw guitar player ever, but Brian May was more adaptive . Love them both. Maybe its my thing, never like Tool (although like i said and you said Pneuma has this creative drum composition, but its nothing special to me). Guess it's a matter of taste :), and i like the drum here, again but its nothing over the top for me :)
