The great Terry Kath, the most underrated rock guitarist of all time. R.I.P.
@midnightrambler7716

@@HiddenSymmetry He is underrated though. You’ll rarely find him on the “best of“ lists of the greatest guitarists of all time. Forgotten in the dustbin of time. He’s definitely one of the top 10 best I’ve ever heard. And I’ve been around since the 60s.

@@CarlEichmanMusic I know Rolling Stone is a terrible magazine compared to what it used to be but it’s still a major publication. He didn’t make their top 250 for example. I’m sure there’s all kinds of indie magazines that pick him. And people in the know. But that still doesn’t mean he’s not underrated. He gets overlooked all the time from what I’ve seen. We’re pretty much talking semantics here. There’s three choices. He’s either overrated, been given his due respect, or underrated. I have rarely seen the first two among the masses. Yes of course, people in the know like yourself and myself give him all kinds of the respect that he deserves. And yes, it’s a long time since he died so that’s part of the problem. But nobody has any problem remembering Jimi Hendrix or giving him his due respect.

I use this song to both say "this is what Terry, Peter, and Danny would have been like as a power trio," and to counter those people who only know Peter as the '80s Chicago pretty-boy love song crooner. Dude had chops.

Chicago was my favorite band for a few years. I was a little kid when this album came out. Bro would crank this 8 track and especially I'm a Man in his green '68 Mustang (like Bullitt). Great bro who turned 75 this year. He was a mechanic when I was in college and he used to give me $20/wk spending money so I always had money for dates, concerts, things I needed and other good times. Gave him and his wife a nice vacation in Puerto Vallarta for his 75th. Loved everyone in Chicago but Terry Kath was my fave.

Whenever someone is skeptical about the greatness of Terry Kath, I play this song for them and their jaw usually hits the floor. Terry, Danny on drums and Peter on bass make up one of the most talented trio of musicians in rock history. You mentioned Hendrix: Chicago’s “Oh Thank You Great Spirit”, is Terry’s tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Definitely worth a listen.

The first few minutes are basically a 'power trio' section, with all three of them just going wild on ther respective instruments. An amazing song and an unbelievable debut album. For most bands a best-of album wouldn't be that good, for them it was just their first album! Robert Lamm wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on CTA, so he deserves huge props for that. I never hear anything that sounds like two guitars. Terry does an octave thing on the guitar for a bit in that first soloing section, a little trick most guitar players know. You play the same note on two different strings, with one an octave higher than the other, and you slide up and down the neck. Maybe that's what you were talking about.
