The Band: ‘Hey Columbia Records. We have all this material for our first LP so we’d like to release a DOUBLE album with all the trimmings. Lyrics, custom art, etc. and it will be very expensive to manufacture and ship and we have no idea how well it will sell.’ Columbia Records: ‘OK, sounds good.’ It was a different time for music.

Gambled paid off. Immensely
@craigw1911Ай бұрын
Producer James William Guercio had to BEG Columbia Records for that double-LP. The suits at Columbia were like, "WTF, no!" and Guercio had to plead with them and make some concessions to get it done. The studio limited Guercio and the band to five days of basic tracks and five days of overdubbing, recording in 8 tracks. According to a Wikipedia article on the first album, the first song they recorded in the studio was "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and they tried recording it all at once live as a full band. It didn't work so they recorded drums, bass, keyboard, and guitars first and THEN recorded the horns and vocals.
@craigw1911Ай бұрын
It was definitely ballsy that the band debuts with double-LPs as their first THREE albums, then put out a FOUR-LP box set recorded live at Carnegie Hall for their fourth release. Plus bonus posters and booklets. Vinyl beats CD in that regard. We Chicago fans got goodies in a few albums. Chicago at Carnegie Hall included a 4 foot by 6 foot poster, and Chicago VIII included an iron-on transfer of the album jacket design.

I say this a lot about bands: I love their early stuff the best. This is true with Chicago (Transit Authority). There are exceptions like the Beatles but It’s the lifers who give you a lifetime of music where this is mostly true. Stones 60’s and 70’s. Springsteen - first six albums. Chicago also 60’s and 70’s. Love this first album. It’s like it’s been memorialized by the bands original name before they were forced to change it. You’re the best. I sound old. Keep it up.

Nice! "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" is one of the first songs I remember hearing when I was a really little kid back when the song was new. That trumpet solo intro is catchy. Dig how once the song gets going the rhythm resembles a jaunty walk down the street just as described in the lyrics. Pop stations never played the piano intro, but many FM rock stations would later in the seventies as a way to demonstrate their credibility.

Of course, this was one of the first albums I bought and I love most of it (sorry, “FFG”!), including “Someday”. Lots of guitar on that song. A great guitarist, like Terry, does what the song needs and that one needed killer rhythm playing and some cool atmospheric stuff during the intro. Great reaction.

So, today was a Robert Lamm showcase and we got some great piano work along with his vocals (Plus Peter Cetera on the chorus of Someday). These two songs do rely more on rhythm and brass than on guitar work. Someday is all about piano, bass, and drums to drive the tune and the brass comes in to accent the vocal. These two songs really show off some of the versatility of Chicago back in those early years.
