I saw Zappa eleven times. He's the best guitarist I ever witnessed, and I went to a lot of concerts b3sck in the day. Frank NEVER disappointed.

I know , it might seem strange to some , but ZAPPA has been in my top 5 of guitar gods for 40 years ! In no particular order , Hendrix , Jeff Beck, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, and Frank Zappa , , and Tommy Bolin, Ritchie Blackmore , , , Keep on jammin !!

Zappa plays the most interesting guitar solos I have ever heard. There are hundreds of those solos out there to be heard and they are all different and most of them are musically really exciting. These live improvised solos with Vinnie reacting to Frank's playing are miraculous.

That's the reason Vinnie colaiuta is glorified, but Bozzio was a better fit for Frank just before you children got into Frank, he was even better before 1978.

@@Royale_with_Cheeze Mark Perenteuo, (spelling??) he also played Dynamo a few times. He played all the tunes that other stations would not dare. You had to be lucky to catch one, these tunes were not on a play list. They would play them once or twice. When was the last time you heard: Don't Bogart that J... my friend, hand it over to me... Or "Everyone is an A-whole"

@@alldayadventures5418 Funny you mention Mark, although I inquired. I just mentioned him yesterday in a YT comment that mentioned WBCN. I can always tell it was Zappa who mentored Steve Vai. Vai is the guy that carries the Zappa torch onward!
@BobBenson-qz8lp3 ай бұрын
Hey, was dumb all over song on you are what you is Frank or Steve solo? I say Vai soloed on that because in the original LP ,the solo was in its full length, then they cut it out for the CD era. Could indicate Frank didn't want to pay royalties to Vai for that solo. That guitar cut had Vai tones all over it.Many spots idn't even sound like a Frank style but more of a very young Vai style.
@Royalle_with_Cheese3 ай бұрын
@@BobBenson-qz8lp According to the website that has info on everything on every Zappa album, Steve Vai isn't even credited as playing on Dumb All Over. As to paying royalties, that doesn't make sense. When a player takes an improvised solo in concert and Frank releases it, does he have to pay royalties to that person? Did he have to pay royalties to your beloved Terry for improvised drum solos?

Zappa had one good thing going for him. Lowell George, founder of Little Feat, and Roy Estrada, Little Feat's original bassist, both got their start in Zappa's band. So, the man does recognize talent.

Two stories on why Lowell George left the Mothers: One was that he wrote the song "Willin'" and it had drug references in it and Frank didn't want any of that, although on the Uncle Meat album, which has Lowell on it, In The Air, Frank writes: *My hands* *Are gripping* *But they're slipping* *And they're dripping* *'Cause I'm tripping* The other story is that Frank told Lowell he was too talented to be a sideman in his band and should go out and start his own band. Little Feat was great!

I loved his serious instrumental. It was beautiful with the little bell sounds in the background. “Treacherous Cretins” - so wry of him to call it that and make such a beautiful tune. (or the other way around) Thank you, Peter and Lee!

FTR Treacherous Cretins was played sometimes in 4-4 and sometimes in 11-8. This 4-4 version obviously is from London, early in the 1979 tour. But my favorite version of TC is from the Copenhagen gig - its first segment is one of those "suddenly Frank's let his guard down and is making his guitar weep, for a reason" type moments. Almost as good is the one from Zurich (...and what a guitar night that was!)
