One of my alltime favorites. The guitar sound is torturing "just as evil as you could be" and the solo is fire. Ricky Lancelote is "the zombie woof behind your eyes". This silly, funny sh¡t in combination with the playful arrangements is pure genius. I was a teenager when I heard this album for the first time 50 years ago, my eyes and mouth wide open (it was my first Zappa experience), just thinking okay, this is how it feels when a train hits you?!😂

woof woof - I don't know if you read, but there are 2 great books about Zappa. One by his late younger brother: "Bobby & Frankie", early stuff growing up and becoming the Zappa we all know. The other one is by his English secretary at the time: "Freak Out, my Life with Frank Zappa" by Pauline Butcher. These two are kinda - fly on the wall - books with juicy anecdotes.

Frank Zappa - Dupree's Paradise (1973) live kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6OZnoeipL59gNU Orchestration: 2 flutes, 2 oboes (2nd = English horn), 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, percussion (bass drums, bells, castanets, chimes, cymbals, Chinese cymbals, gong, maracas, marimba, piccolo snare drum, pop gun, slapstick, snare drum, tam-tam, vibraphone, woodblock, xylophone), harp, 2 pianos (= celestas), and strings “Dupree’s Paradise is about a bar on Avalon Boulevard in Watts at 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday in 1964, during the early morning jam session. For about seven minutes, the customers (winos, musicians, degenerates and policemen) do the things that set them apart from the rest of society.” Zappa’s Varèse-inspired point of reference is apparent in his sheer exuberance with the ringing, clanging, abutting piles of sound he marshals. Zappa takes the opening optimistic tune down the rabbit hole, from which it emerges at times sounding like Gershwin, at others like a serialist’s lost weekend. As for his rhythms, Zappa notes they are in general derived from speech patterns and “should have the same sort of flow a conversation would have.”

L33… Zappa’s “THING-FISH” (1984) originally released as a triple LP box set . Billed as a BROADWAY “Cast Recording” (Terry & Dale Bozzio… Stevie Vai … the usual suspects)… for a proposed musical. The PLAY was never produced by Zappa but it was partially performed in 2003 … 10 years after his death . Originally the LP was poorly received by “critics” … it has since been reappraised for its highly satirical content . Start at the beginning … it’s basically one long song/story . I think you are the only creator who could tackle Franks incredible sense of humor on this highly profane & TIMELY concept album . Love Frank Friday . Peace !!! 🎸🎸🎸

I used to have a mini cd of Frank Zappa playing Zomby Woof live, it also had Variations On The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression. I think it was a bonus cd that came with Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar. If I dig through all my cd's I'll probably find it lurking there, it's on my ancient iPod so I must have it somewhere.

Man, I can't tell you how good it feels to see a younger brother and fellow musician getting into Frank. And if you are into him, I'm sure you would love a lot of other stuff you may not have heard. I hope you have a good mentor. It makes all the difference in the world. There is so much good "older" music out there and it's great to see some younger cats discovering it. There is more than you could imagine my friend. If you like some of the newer stuff, great. But you are wasting your time because there is so much that is constantly overlooked by everyone other than the die hard melomaniacs who are ALSO serious musicians that surpass musically and creatively anything you hear today. That's a bold statement that might piss off a few people. But I will die on that hill because I know if I can get people to hear the music they will agree they were missing out 99% of the time. I'll give you a tip from a fellow musician who is NOT a drummer. but has played with many drummers. Learn to play quiet. It won't be necessary for rock, funk, punk, grunge, or whatever. But it will give your playing nuances you never dreamed of. Go listen to some of the great jazz drummers and listen to the sublet licks they play. Keep at my friend and if you ever want my suggestions I'll be glad to speak out. Be aware I do not keep a You Tube account as I do not make videos. I just check out what some other are doing. If there is a way, I'll shoot you and give you my two cents for what it's worth. I'm certain I can cause your ears to prick up and pay attention. Best wishes and keep grooving to that great "older" stuff. You just can't miss with some of it.

hey L33 - if I may… perspective, my dude… we all need to seriously cut ourselves some slack (in terms of self-criticism. I get it - but ya’ know… we’re all on this ‘ship of fools’ and… it’s like that line from some horror movie from the 70’s; “it’s only a movie, it’s only a movie”, lol perspective is where we’re at risk of going off-the-rails (in terms of anxiety, depression, etc.). I know - easy for me to say. but - if we’ve got a character of decency, compassion, an molecular level appreciation for beauty (e.g., music, art, nature), a laughter (a human-unique blessing right up there with sex), we’re righteous - and need to give ourselves a break on self-criticalness. Love is in that ^^ set too, but… *that* one can of course cut both ways, but… there’s no free lunch, right?.. in physics and humanity there’s no UP without a corresponding DOWN, no left without a right, etc. internalizing these axiom a taking a sort Albert Camus posture on it all can help liberate us from self-loathing and worry. oh, and Frank Zappa is mui goodness for the soul! 😎 thanks L33 - be kind, to *you* please. seanM

Best MOI album ever w/ their best lineup. Sadly, shortly after the success of this album, Zappa fired most of the Mothers w/ some bs excuse, & hired a new backup band that was nowhere near as good as this lineup. The MOI were furious- toiling away for years on $200 per week per man & woman, then when they thought they finally made it big Frank dumped the lot of them & never paid them another cent until they sued him & collected a few measly bucks many years later. Sorry but it's true. Zappa spent his whole life (and much of his music) raging at big record companies, while he was one of the WORST ripoff artists there ever was at ignoring the contracts of his hired hands & then letting time & legal fees grind them down, knowing they didn't have the money to fight him in court. Ok rant over, I love Zappa & his music, but I woulda loved to hear 5 or 6 more albums from this group (the MOI changed personnel a LOT.) But that's what they say about geniuses like Zappa- thats just the way he was, if it weren't for his faults he would've been a different person & maybe never have been half the genius he was. Anyway someone oughta react to this entire album, every single song deserves to be on one Top Ten list or another. PS If I understand correctly Zappa mellowed somewhat, towards the end of his life, but I don't think he ever apologized to the MOI. I'm not even saying he was a bad person, I sure never knew him, but he was a lousy boss. One thing I DO know from rough personal experience, as do most older folks like me- money does that to people.
