Thank you to our patron Jane for this gut punch of a pick... it's been a while since we have done a Tori track. And wow, she broke me once again. What a talented artist... she is so wonderful. This video is a literal punch to the kidneys as a father of little girls... they are growing so quick :(

I’ve seen her in concert and heard all her albums. And I’ve never watched this video! Was pretty good. Favorite song. But live in Montreux is what I always watch for this. Will move your soul. Sorry for your troubles! We’ve all had those experiences and I understand you. And Tori speaks to us!!!!

Tori is scary potent. This can be a wake up call being asked by Tori herself, a lover, Mother Earth, Life itself. Reminds us love is always present and is as foundational as consciousness. Maybe it's the same thing.... Remember.

I love this song so much. And the studio version is very good, but there's an even better version. Please watch Tori Amos - Winter (From "Live At Montreux 91/92") on youtube. A brilliant live version where she expresses so much emotion and the piano playing is so amazing.

Jane, thank you so much for this pick and happy belated birthday! Tori just has this way of grabbing your soul and pulling out the same raw emotions that she gives out. I love her fearlessness in uniquely expressing all human emotions in different songs through her experiences and the experiences of others.

Even though most people suggest it be done first, I'm glad you did the studio version before the live one from Montreux. You do need to watch that, whether for a reaction or simply for yourself on you own time. So many Tori songs that one could do. Pretty much anything from the first two albums including all the extra tracks and B-Sides she released, at the point she couldn't seem to contain her creativity and was producing music faster than the label could work with it. I'd simply start by looking up a list of her released singles and going from there if you want to do songs, but her first 5 albums in particular could use a full listen through reaction, and then do some of the bonus tracks and such from the singles as one-off song reactions.

Masterpiece, and i don't say it often... Tory is a frwak of nature, in a good way. She told that in music school she started surpassing her teachers at some point, whennshe made a pact with her piano. Seen her twice, and will never forget it.

I hope you understand, this was a loving tribute to her father, how he taught her not to let anything else get in the way of loving herself first, it's a lesson many young women need to hear, the earlier, the better. The song in the third verse and chorus, is Tori turning the question back to her father, when you gonna love you as much as I do? All the white horses have gone ahead, in this case, represent sacrifices and missed opportunities by her father(and mother) to make sure Tori fulfills her dreams, and there's a bit at the end where Tori sings "never change" to her father, which is cut out of the music video, because record companies suck.

Great reaction, sincere. This song reminds me of Pink Floyd "Time" and Led Zeppelin "Ten Years Gone." The one thing we can't get back is time. Also, as a huge Tori fan, seen her many times live, my favorite album is still "Boy's for Pele."

Winter is one of Tori’s best.. Simply beautiful! FYI, the version in the music video is edited, not the complete song as recorded… Also, as others have suggested, the live Montreux version is mandatory listening..Her emotions in that live recording is something to behold. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ7OYXSMg7d1f7ssi=h3EyCZvhE_TzRmgR

Coming back to this to say again that Tori's work potentially could be helpful to your recovery and overall wellness. I hope I don't come across as fanatical in saying it, but she has been my favorite artist (of any medium) since 1996, and I've met her several times and every time, many fans of hers have told her in front of me that she "saved my life." She didn't save my life, but her music and her words (She's written two books and has given a lot of interviews.) have enhanced my life greatly. Her work was my music-as-art awakening, and it has led me into so many different directions of spiritual, political, and other types of investigations and understanding. Her music can be very confrontational, but it is entirely founded in empathy, and within even really knowing it, her music has supported my natural empathy for others while stealthily developing my empathy and care for myself. Little Earthquakes is generally the best "starter album" for Tori because her music becomes increasingly complex and complicated and challenging to decipher with subsequent albums-but I think it would also be best for you because it drives straight to the root of some of the types of personal challenges you're living with now. As you said, this could be coming to you at exactly the right time, just when you need it. Given what you've said about your life right now, I think her albums From the Choirgirl Hotel and her most recent album Ocean to Ocean could be rewarding for you. I also think her albums Night of Hunters, Boys for Pele, Scarlet's Walk, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, and Unrepentant Geraldines also could touch a nerve with you (in a positive way) during this period of your life, but all those albums are less immediately accessible in different ways. Some are wild and cryptic and some might sound too sedate to get into very easily without already having some familiarity with her work. I do hope you'll listen to her music offline and not only when people on Patreon request it, just because, truly, Tori Amos's music is a gift to humanity collectively and individually, and all the personal information you disclosed in this video strongly suggest that her music could be really good for you-so give her albums a listen for your own sake, whether or not people ask you to watch them online. Take care of yourself and your family.

Great reaction! I've always adored this song, bc it reminds me of my own dear dad, whom I lost when I was just 20. I really felt your heartfelt reasons for the connection here & hope life changes frequency for you bro! I understand! Sometimes its just fact that when it rains it bloody pours. But if I can say anything of value, it's that there's literal power in being & paying forward gratitude for the good stuff. Anything & everything, from watching the birds in the neighbors tree, to a child's smile, to great service at the market... whatever it is. They change frequencies & and become processions of little miracles of hope in your day. It just somehow works precisely when we need it to. Take care x

Beautiful song - and I commend you for opening up as you did at the end. There’s a lot to read into Tori’s songs, and I’m glad you got the message. Please make sure your daughter grows up to love herself as much as you love her. Me and a Gun is an even more haunting performance. Buckle up for that one.

Not quite. She's the youngest person accepted into the Peabody Conservatory of Music, not Juillard, at age five. She was there on scholarship and her scholarship was not renewed when she was 11 years old because of insubordination. She was interested in contemporary music and wanted to compose her own music, and the school told her that women cannot be composers and that she needed to focus on playing the classical music composed by men who were long dead. She had different ideas. Interestingly, the Peabody invited her back after she had become a star and she declined to make an appearance. However, she did go back a few years ago when they presented her with the Peabody's highest honor and her acceptance speech can be seen here on KZbin. She's usually very well composed and confident but her speech was kind of angry and disorganized. She basically told all the students that the music business has nothing to do with art and they would all have to choose between being faithful to their muses and honor their artistry or else sell out and betray their muses for the almighty dollar. It was an intensely felt and personal warning from her.

Beautiful. So simple, but packs a wallop. Have you done much Joni Mitchell? This song reminds me of her Blue period. There is a vid from the BBC of her alone at a baby grand piano singing Woodstock that is absolutely, gorgeously ethereal.
