I talked to Bill after a gig last year. He was incredibly friendly and humble. - undoubtedly one of the all time greats.

@@a5dr3 i was fortunate enough to study with Bill back around 1989. He was fresh out of William Patterson and had just moved to the city, when he got a teaching gig at the University of Connecticut. It was a great experience!

Bill is good and used to be exciting, but this is like these guys were called out of a nursing home to play a gig, insanely boring.

Wow. 😂 I studied with Bill. He's definitely one of the greatest Jazz musicians of the last 40 years. Your comment is pure ignorance ( or jealousy?) You think Roy Haynes or Papa Joe would've said what you did? Yeah Buddy Rich looked down on matched grip, but he was a colossal asshole - not saying he wasn't a killer drummer. Traditional grip was utilized originally from marching a snare slung across your body forcing the trad grip (makes sense with drum at an angle) but with modern drumset why bother? Play the way you're comfortable playing. I've studied with guys who played both ways, one of them finished 2nd place in a National Snare competition in the 80's - awesome hands, great player - and he could rip with both techniques.

@@GrandeCapo_PallaPesante my first teacher when I was 11 ('70s) was a local guy who was a regular working drummer in CT taught me with matched grip even though he was a traditional grip player. He could do both. I don't play timpani with a traditional grip nor did I use that when marching tenor drums in college. Guess what? I can do both if needed. Again, it depends on the players comfort level.
