This is probably not the type of TPS video that will get tons of views-but man, I really appreciate you committing this to video. Music is, for me, just the pursuit of sound that moves me. Whether that’s guitars, pedals, orchestra-so watching you hunt these sounds-what a great adventure. And it sounds ace.

In all of my years recording and engineering professionally, I don't think I have ever seen anyone use a loop on a preamp - I didn't even know that's a thing! Thank you for this video and teaching me something new, you guys are awesome!

Inserts!? Every decent desk has them……
@mammothaudioengineering Жыл бұрын
@@ThatPedalShow I have honestly just never thought about it. I also don't have a huge desk haha. I tend to go source -> mic -> pre -> comp -> - daw. If I record any time based effects, it's always before the mic. If not and I need a delay or reverb or whatever, it's most often on a send. I have a 500 series rack and the heritage audio 1073, none of my pres have a loop. It's honestly something I never even thought was a thing!
@ThatPedalShow Жыл бұрын
Ha! Cool! More fun to have. To be fair there’s not a //huge// difference in just running them in series when you have separate pres and 500 stuff….
@mammothaudioengineering Жыл бұрын
@@ThatPedalShow no, I agree, the difference is negligible, but it's still great to be aware of these options. Of course one could always reamp or send it out like you did with the reverb and delay for the drums, but still. Learned something new and that's what matters!

One thing I absolutely agreed in this video is your happy face, Mick, beside the chance to twist knobs and create every single time something weird and totally new, that is the must important part of Music History. Many times we trying to recreate exactly what Pink Floyd did at Pompeii or Garcia did in Monterey Pop Festival or whatever we want to recreate but tha was magical just because of the analog nature of the equipment available at that time! And this new Echorec promise to do exactly the same things…4 thumbs up to T-Rex!!!!

The Two-rock, de Dual Mesa EVs, Two-rock + Matchless, The 60s VOX, VOX & Lazy J, Two-rock + Marshall,... C'mon, Mick! Make that episode about IRs and give us a bit of your Engineer ears so we can support TPS with some IR packs.

A tip to get only wet from a piece like this echorec is to print the track two times with the device. One wet and one dry (at the same volume) . Then flip the phase of the dry track and you're left with wet only, and you can print the sum of the tracks to a new wet only track. Just did this with my Binson.

That Echorec sounds really cool, lots of info regarding the finer points of using it in a studio, much appreciated. Gotta mention it....the drums obviously have the Bonham vibe, however you also got reallly, really close to nailing Alex Van Halen's woody snare tone on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance albums. Alot of drummers have pondered how to get that sound to no avail. You're very close tho. Nice work!

I recommend getting some in ear monitors if you want to hear what the mics are hearing when you're in the room with a loud amp. Most people only think of them as something to use in a live context but they can actually be super useful in a studio context as well.

Mick - loved the “song”, and that smile on your face when you got the reverb buss working. :) I have a hypothesis that the “real” advantage of analog is the three-dimensional workflow. We’ve all seen the shootouts by various companies (Universal Audio among them) demonstrating how close we are getting to emulating analog gear. In fact, in most cases, if the sound is all there is, I’d advise to buy good digital gear. However, humans really don’t do well in a two-dimensional world. We really are supremely advanced in operating in physical space, and I really don’t think we will ever be completely satisfied working on a screen, in menus when you could just turn a physical knob.

G'day Mick, That was an excellent mixing job. The wet & dry guitar tracks came through my home sound system very well ( for Noel's knobs, PS3 -> Marantz amp @ 30% -> 2 Klipsch 30w speakers & a 10" subwoofer). The separation wasn't at a "Whole Lotta Love" level, but great, nonetheless. It was a joy to hear. Keep up the good work Andrew

Hi Mick! Awesome video! Seems a bit of an oversight not to have a simple kill dry available on the new echorec. I use an Echofix tape delay as outboard and it does have this feature. Having all the effects parallel to the dry signal keeps things organized and flowing. Looking forward to more pedals as outboard videos! Now you got me gassin for some Neve…

Good job Mick! I much prefer using outboard to plug ins because as you say it inspires and of course is more fun. I am surprised however at the lack of kill dry without a mod on the echorec. As others have said, I think the use of effects pedals as outboard could be a really interesting series to see what will and won’t work. EG the origin Effects or Empress compressors v a modelled plug in or what overdrives may work on vocals.
