His wallet! It's actually fairly common for drummers to put a wallet on their drums. I guess experimentation has led lots of people to independently discovering that wallets mute drums really well! You don't wanna drum with a wallet under you, and a floor tom is a great place to toss it. Turns out it has the benefit of actually sounding good too. Now there are products called "wallets" that aren't even wallets, but try to mimic the muting properties of one.
