My favorite part of military history is actually told to me by my mother-in-law. She was born in Riga, Latvia, in the 1930's and witnessed the invasion of Stalin and Hitler. What surprised me the most about what she told me and that was the reason why her family fled Latvia and came to America, and that was because they learned that Hitler was losing and Stalin was coming back.

I think Jack is making points that complement TFE’s but just doesn’t realize it. Jack says that everyone, even “anti-war” journalists, were supportive of WWII at the time, which supports TFE’s argument of how it shifted so drastically to people looking down on WWII. Solid points on Japanese vs Germans. And I am married to a Japanese woman. For Americans yes there was little relatable conversation between Veterans from those two theatres. It was different for Australians. Almost all of our WWII personnel who served in Europe or the Mediterranean theatres later fought Japan in the Pacific theatre. In Australia that divide simply didn't exist. Because unlike WWI, the fighting was on our doorstep. We had troops dying in PNG for example that were closer to our northern and eastern coasts than the distances between our major cities.

One of my grandfathers was in the battle of Okinawa. After the battle, he wanted a war trophy. He found a Japanese sniper who had been killed and was still wearing his helmet. When my grandpa went to take the helmet, the whole head came with it. He didn't want to get dirty, so he took a rock and started bashing the head to try to break it loose from the helmet. It just made a mess of the helmet, so he left it there. He was well into his eighties, and I was in my thirties before I heard that story. My sister is still traumatized.

He had to throw his bdus(or green jeans, I don't remember now because it was so long ago, but basically whatever his combat uniform was) over the side of the ship just to cross the gangplank into the US, because there were so many protestors that he was afraid for his life. The only thing he kept were his combat boots and field jacket(only reason I know that is because he told me about it when i joined the civil air patrol in 1991 and happened to wear the same size so i could wear them as part of my uniform, with his USAF insignia). And that was while he was on his way to being stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB where I was born

Jack is very much wrong about Vietnam veterans. My father was in Vietnam and was proud to come home in 1972. He’s told the story many times how he wore his uniform getting off the plane in New York and walked out of the airport to be called a baby killer, had shit thrown on him and spit on. He went to jail for beating the crap out of some hippies that day and then reenlisted to go back because he felt he wasn’t wanted in America anymore. American exceptionalism is real because we have been kicking ass for a long, goddamn time and it's about time that someone started talking about the accomplishments of our troops in every combat theater. 7. TFE's depiction of our troops is accurate. Past Operation Praying Mantis, the US military has been fully capable of dropping nations with impunity, yet we've never kept more arable land than was necessary for us to bury the soldiers who gave their lives to keep that country free. 8. Taming down history is kinda the problem because it takes away all the context as to why things are the way they are. Like the cleansing of Europeans into "refined Gentleman" which is the biggest load of f***in bullshit. They are worse than the US. The only reason WW3 didn't start in Europe is because America kicked their asses, twice. Though it might still happen because Russia is technically European. Or even modern times where people act likes its all sunshine and rainbows in Europe while France is borderline on civil war and farmers throughout Europe are showering government buildings in cow poop. Of course, audience is everything. You shouldn't talk about what the vikings did to anglo-saxon women to 3rd graders, but yeah.

@the_fat_electrician legit needs to add a "Hot Takes" style segment/episode in addition to his regular show where he goes into exactly the same type of (for lack of a better term) rant as he did about "winning Vietnam". That was such an articulate and brilliant argument he made.

I'm 42, and legit, Vietnam was BARELY touched in my history classes. Everyting I learned was from my parents who lived through the "Conflict"

American "war crimes" in WW2 were standard war practice for all of human history. Some soldiers will always take out frustration on civilians, it is part of war. Compared to other countries in WW2 American soldiers were saints. "Assaults" on civilians and some level of looting, which was reported and punished way more frequently than any other army. The Soviet Union, Germany, and Japan did all the things America did and way, way more. Death camps, mistreating prisoners and civilians on large scale and as common official practice, including: torture, "assaults", experimentation, starvation, etc. Even the English intentionally targeted civilians far more often than the U.S. What I am getting at is for every 1 war crime U.S. forces committed the other countries committed 100.

Sometimes I wonder why KZbin holds these works of art hostage for so long. And then, the episode drops, and within the first 10 minutes it all makes sense! 🤣 I absolutely love the super long episodes!
