Welles had just come back from a shoot in Las Vegas which went on all night. He took a sleeping pill expecting it to kick in during the limo ride to Los Angeles, but he didn't feel it until arriving at the commericial set. He explained it to the director, who suggested Welles film a few disposable takes before going to sleep so that they could tell the insurance people that Orson worked today.
