Honestly a solid attempt for a country that's not one's own, as someone who was formerly terrible with my country/state/province/territory/county locations I feel compelled to say that it's a very quick process for learning this stuff through rote memorisation, far quicker then people probably assume. If you think knowing let's say all 50 US states' locations is cool (or a light flex) and you have literally just a single free hour, don't stop yourself and give it a go. I apparently found it satisfying enough to go and learn where everything is which I know a lot of people don't care for but it really does something for your grasp of the world.

Honestly, I would say Vedal did decent given that he got 19 of the 50 states correct. He has some good knowledge as a Brit. I would like to see him trying to place the capitals of every state too. Some thing like Santa Fe may be more easy to figure, but Jackson would be rather mundane, and then a doubler like Columbia and Columbus. Mmmm. Also, 16:37 I like this tip. It is valid. Similar to the tip of “What did Tennessee see? The same thing that Arkansas saw.”. Which really only works if you pronounce Arkansas without the second “s”, for some reason. Same thing with Illinois, pronounced without the “s”. Why have the letter if it is silent? Rather silly, that is. Any way, enjoyable video.

General rule of thumb, if it's something like "New [placename]", "[Name]ia]" or "[Name]'sland" it'll most likely be on the east or gulf coast, since most of those states were European colony names, while a large percentage of the rest are named for Native American groups or words. Also, as a Wisconsinite, how dare Vedal say Wisconsin is Michigan. Though I love how he decided the UP is a separate state.

Honestly, I'm impressed. He probs did better than a lot of random Americans you could ask on the streets. If you take into account the ones he got right and the ones he was only 1 state off from, even better. My favorite one he got right was Kentucky, not just because of his explanation of why he remembered, but also because that's the state making a lot of bourbon and whiskey and I feel like liquor is up his alley. "My favorite mistake was what Koko said when he put West Virginia *east* of Virginia. Either way, he has a lot more awareness of a foreign country than most people and he did get all the big states right with CA, TX, FL and was close on NY. If the shoe were on the other foot, I doubt you'd find many Americans that could confidently point to where Wales or Scotland were on a map of the UK.

See, the thing is, none of these are political entities in international terms. These are internal administrative divisions within a country. My country's got almost 90 of these. It'd hardly be reasonable to expect people, even highly knowledgeable ones, to remember all or even most of them. But actual full countries, that's a bit different.

The main reason why a non-american knows its american states is pop culture. So we know California, Texas, Florida and New York because those are represented in movies and series. We know Alaska and Hawaii because they're the outliers. We have a vague concept of New England and the South for those who are a bit historically aware. And that's pretty much it.
