Clifton, where did you get that banjo? I am in love with it. Until last week, I didn’t even know they existed. The moment I saw one, I felt a strong intuitive inclination toward it. Maybe I would learn easier, better on a fretless. (I’m good at finding notes to melodies on piano, guitar.) And that bulge in the neck appeals to my hand & its fingers-more space on the neck. I’m taking up banjo again after a brief, but intense attempt almost 30 years ago. I’ve been learning a lot, but I’ve got a cheap (it’s nameless) fretted banjo. If I start relearning on it will that make a fretless harder? I won’t be surprised to wake up tomorrow morning & realize I dreamed about your banjo here. Any guidance is welcome!

@@CliftonHicksbanjo I am still figuring out if my left hand can do something different in concert with my right. I am willing to be patient, resourceful, and dogged.

What the hell is it about a well played banjo that it's able to flood someone with emotions it feels like the sound is coded into the history of my blood

What the hell? The banjo AND the voice. Clifton is very good.

Banjo is a very primal instrument, theres something about it that can bring out my wild energy. The syncopation, the rhythm. Its almost trance inducing at times.

Really cool, that chord shape looks a lot like a G (and a C when dropped 2 strings) on the guitar also. Great old tune thank you sir God Bless!

Have you ever experienced a noticeable change in sound over time when a new banjo like yours breaks in and settles ? Thanks for the great vid.

They change from day to day, with the weather. And there is a breaking-in period. I don't know how noticeable it is.

the banjo is a really sensitive instrument when it comes to tuning. temp changes, humidity changes, you look at it funny, bam tuning shifts lol

Love this song. I’m trying to tune 100% relatively by ear, so it would be super helpful for me to have that marked in the description. For example, when I tune to “standard” I just write it as: 5435, so I know where to fret to tune the next string up. Tune the low string by ear, fret 5 and tune the 3rd string. Fret 4 on the 3rd string to tune the 2nd etc… I’m probably over complicating things and missing something, but I’m new to banjo and trying to find my way in the world.

Thanks, Nate. Tuning is in the description: d♯CFB♭C ~ fDGCD

That’s cool. If I ever can perform seriously, having a starting point and a prepared set of numbers like that sounds like a plan.

“f DGCD … the F chord shape” 🌹EDIT … Clifton. I have a Sweeney reproduction which has Aquila 7b strings. According to a Aquila customer representative answer, “The 7b minstrel set is for minstrel type banjos using low D Briggs tuning or dGDF#A. For today's "standard" G banjo tuning get the classic nylgut.” …. What do I do??? Right now, my banjo is so engrained in that type of tuning, (I use d ADF#A) that all I do is move the bridge according to the weather to stay in tune. Mr. Hartel’s work is amazing. QUESTION: Can “I Saw A Man” be played using the FShape and that type of minstrel tuning? If I try the tuning suggested in the video, there are too many slack or tense strings. Thanks. Rob🌴Subscribed and Patreoned. ☑️

what gauge strings do you use for this kind of banjo? if I were using nylon like a classical guitar. they look and sound great.
