i wish Legend of Korra showed how Zuko ended up raising Izumi. from the brief appearance of Izumi, we clearly see that she’s levelheaded and honorable, but i wonder what steps Zuko deliberately took in being a good father.

Spoilers for the Search, but Ursa does return and has her former appearance restored after it was altered by the Mother of Faces. So, Zuko does have parenting tips on hand from his mother.

As a victim of child abuse and gaslighting, ozai gaslighting & maintaining fear in his victims is one of the attributes that narcissistic & machiavellianisn abusers use on their victims thus when zuko's mother called out ozai's bluff - ozai was angry like any narcissistic & machiavellianisn abuser that they are losing control & their victims are fighting back. Not bcoz they are guilty or even remotely ashamed of what they did but only that they might lose the ability to abuse victims anymore and that's a harsh reality. This is very essential to realize bcoz your abusers will never acknowledge that they abused you while your guilt as the victim who let the abuser abuse hurt you simultaneously. Thus when I was in therapy for dealing with abuse, the only main thing I learnt was that it's not my fault as a victim to either confront them nor feel ashamed for being abused. My sole responsibility is to heal myself so that I don't become like my abusers and abuse people who genuinely love me while simultaneously understanding that I need to speak up when I am in a better place so that others don't get abused as much as I did. That's something that ATLA, video essays by people like Dr.Upauli & my therapist taught me and I am proud that I am a survivor while doing maximum that I can do for others abused like me to heal themselves. Afterall, iroh once said - "Sometimes the best way to help yourself, is to help others" I do vouch for this but also emphasize that your healing comes first!

Well done on your success! Keep going on that rout in life it is so worthwhile! I used to treat people poorly thinking I had good reason too (during childhood and teen years) then I realized though numerous people helping me that I didn't have a good reason and that my behavior wasn't really that bad in the first place. I now spend my time learning to be better and acquire skills needed to advance professionally. I want to get into leadership again and enjoyed my first time (senate at college). I look forward to doing a lot of good and have an inspiring story like you do in the years to come. Forgiveness is the best medicine for sure. It is also true like you mentioned that one cannot heal others until they are healed. Stay blessed and have an awesome life here and beyond!

Although it's only briefly hinted at, we see that Iroh was Azulon's favourite child. I can imagine that had great psychological impact on Ozai. Yes, he was most probably born a psychopath but on top of that he never received love, much like Azula. So he never knew what love actually was. It's partially Azulon's fault that he showed favouritism for his second son to turn out this way. After you think about it, lack of fatherly love is a common issue with dictators. Both Hitler and Stalin had bad relationships with their fathers. This shows how important parenting in early childhood is and also how impotant it is to show love and compassion. Similarly, Ozai never showed love to his children (because he was incapable of that), resulting in Zuko's anger issues and Azula going mad at the age of 14! Zuko was thankfully saved by the love he received from his uncle and mother, but his sister didn't have that in her life. Makes you think how messed up the fire nation royal family is. Lack of love form Azulon probably made the situation with the already problematic Ozai worse, lack of love from Ozai ruined the life of his daughter...

Victoria B yes we do get to see that but it's still not enough , his and iroh relation and probably more to him , I mean it would be better to show if he was somewhat redeemable , I mean even iroh was not a good man before lu ten's death

I like to think that at a point ozai cared for his family. Yes he was always sadistic and never a good father or husband but zuko says in ember island players episode that there were happier times when they went to ember island as a family.also in the storm and the beach episodes we see ozai sitting beside his family with his hand on zuko's shoulder. I think ozai changed mostly after ursa's banishment and taking the throne. He became more cruel and cold hearted to lead the nation in war and expected his children to be like him as well

Funny to notice that all the enemies of the Avatar áre based on USA enemies: Ozai: monarchy Amón:comunism Unalaq: religious fundamentalism. Zaheer: anarchism Kuvira: nazism...
@adamjacobs66442 жыл бұрын
7:23-7:25 The statement by Ozai makes perfect sense, it is ultimately up to the Fire lord to make the right call. "Their is no right or wrong apart from what you (Fire lord) decide", "What you choose, by definition, is right"- Former Fire lord Ozai. Other than that blemish this is an excellent breakdown. I've spent a lot of time studying leadership and practicing it. In fact, that's most of my time spent as a kid, teen and even a young adult. One thing I've found is in life their is really no right and wrong only what needs to be done. This world is about cause and effect. Something causes an action or a reaction depending on the situation. The situation controls the response and the response controls the effect. An extreme example would be a mass shooting incident. The aggressor fires multiple rounds of ammo injuring and killing a number of people. Police and Swat officers are called and strategize how they are going to take the perpetrator down. The perpetrator is taken down and the situation ends. It can also be as casual as a customer wants a product and buys the product from a store after the customer determines the product wanted. I used to think a lot like Ozai, Azula, and Sozin. Now my thought process and behavior is more aliened with Zuko, Iroh, and Aang.

Not trying to defend Ozai but I feel like he wasn’t born evil I think that what turned him evil is because he was made to believe that power is everything and also him being his father’s least favourite I feel like he always wanted to show the world that although he is the second born he was still powerful enough to rule the world

The thing is, all that diagnostic criteria could be applied to a narcissist or a sociopath. I think Ozai is a little more complicated than just a pure psycopath because he's a fictional archetype - we don't really know what he suffers from because he fits the categories for all 3 disorders.
