This game was my obsession when I was a little kid. I also discovered a hidden control feature in this game. I say 'hidden' because I have not found anyone else using it on yuotube, this video's player included. It goes like this: hold the B button, the mech will fire the primary weapon (machine gun, cannon, etc), the D-pad now control the rotation of the mech's head. Rotate the head towards the nearest enemy unit (tank, mech, etc) and let go of the D-pad, the head will now track the enemy unit and the D-pad now controls the legs.

Yes, it explains it in the manual, but people rarely read manuals, or look the manuals up if they lack them (not possible back in the day if you lacked the manual, unless you're lucky enough to find a lone manual). There's two fire modes, one is hit-and-run, and the other is the automatic fire control system (which is the one you described).

funnily enough, dropping one mech in the middle of a heavily fortified enemy installation is exactly what the Clans would do. Which is why they lost.
@kevinW826Ай бұрын
Very true. And if I remember correctly, it was always the least amount of soldiers used for a mission because of the betting of lower? I forget. Loved the idea of strictly one on one and the Trials that were available. I grew up on the novels so my favourite character was Khan Vlad Ward of Clan Wolf. He was the ultimate survivor after the fall of the clans.
@MMDelta9Ай бұрын
@kevinW826 Yup. The Clans would always try to out bid each other by better fewer materials and man power for a given operation. Which is why they'd end up taking on an entire Draconis Combine garrison with 2 heavy mechs. I got into Mechwarrior and BattleTech with a used copy of Mechwarrior 2 I found at a garage sale so I used to love the Clans before I learned more about the setting. Tho Ghost Bear gets a nod of respect for not being absolute pricks.

Love how the fucking Marauder flies around in the intro like a Zentradi Officer Battle Pod from Robotech in the intro, like FASA didn't get in enough trouble from Harmony Gold without Malibu Interactive coming in like "We know where you stole this mech from, and we're gonna make it WAY more obvious by making it do shit that it did in Robotech and CAN'T do in your board game. Good luck with your lawsuit!"
@KlaaismАй бұрын
FASA originally had permission thru Twentieth Century Imports to use the mecha designs from the various original animes, including Dougram, Crusher Joe, and Macross. Robotech itself was a western invention taking footage from various anime such as Southern Cross and Macross, then redubbing new dialogue. FASA abandoned the designs years later during a lawsuit from Playmates Toys and Harmony Gold, who had bought the international rights to the old animes and kitbashed them into Robotech.
@raelik777Ай бұрын
@@Klaaism Yeah, that whole FASA/Playmates/HG triangle was actually... pretty messed up. FASA went to Playmates to make BattleTech toys, they said "Nah.", then Playmates released those ExoSquad toys, one of which was an OBVIOUS rip off of the Mad Cat (the Heavy Attack E-Frame. Google it. It's hilarious). So FASA sued them. Then HG gets Playmates to make Robotech toys, and almost certainly at the prodding of Playmates, they sue FASA over the whole TCI thing, claiming TCI never had the rights to sell licenses to use those images. FASA lost their suit against Playmates... which is honestly utter bullshit, because anyone with eyes can see the Heavy Attack E-Frame was a direct rip off of the Mad Cat (they WERE able to force Playmates to not release the toy though. Probably why no damages were awarded). And FASA got HG to back off by just dumping all those designs, and the issue of TCI having or not having the rights to license those images was never actually resolved legally. Since TCI wasn't even in business by that time, nobody had a dog in that fight anymore. This game came out a year before the HG suit. FASA clearly got fucked over by, well, everyone.

It will always be a mystery for me how it was possible that games like this are officially licensed and approved by FASA. This game completely ignored the details and tactical depth of mech based warfare and reduces it to simple stompy-robots-shoot-at-everything-that-moves-action. Every true mechwarrior would sell his soul to the devil in trade for a mech with a heat management and ammunition depots like this! 😂 Anyways: I have a weak spot for games like this and it is a great game even if it doesn’t cover the specific aspects of the Battletech universe that always made it so special for me.
