I've been dry brushing for years now, also a massage therapist that specializes in lymphatic massage and I can tell you that it's great for lymphatic drainage. Of course people that suffers with skin conditions should stay away. I'm 42 my skin looks 10 years younger.

I have been dry brushing since I was in my 20s. I'm in my 30s now and my skin is soft, smooth and young looking. I think it has to be noted that dry brushing is very gentle. I wouldn't describe it as "rubbing" at all.

You're gorgeous! 😭 I'm 24 and just started dry brushing, but there's so much information online as to the true way of doing it. I've always been doing it as brushing "towards the heart", but some say to brush back and forth, some say to brush away from the heart. And then I dont even know how much pressure is too much lol I guess if my skin isn't turning red then that's good?

I dry brush (using a $14 brush) and no soap unless i am dirty so maybe soap 3-4 times a month. I did it very gently. I have had 5 or 6 family and friends compliment my skin. I understand your points about friction and skin damage but i think that would only happen if you do it wrong. There is no way i am convinced gently brushing/exfoliating my skin can be worse than removing layer of skin and damaging skin from the ingredients in many soaps and other products. I look at it as a gentle natural skin exfoliation. Now that i do this i do not use face soap or moisturizer. I love the details of your videos!

I also dry brush very gently on dry skin with a loofa each morning, after I rub my body down with coconut oil. My skin is silky smooth and feels great! I do not go over areas more than once and my skin has improved a lot. But this video was very informative and I took a lot from it. Thank you!

Dry brushing goes back 5000yrs with Ayurvedic roots. The brush doesn’t need to be expensive, I recommend one with a handle. I started dry brushing 2yrs ago (w/a soft natural bristle brush ($14). Everyday before a shower then lotion up w/Cerave thick cream. Start at the feet, brush towards the heart and you will softly go over the chains of lymph nodes (hence the health benefit). And then there’s there’s the removal of the dead skin which is why I started in the middle of winter. Tired of cracked hands. And wow-my skin, head to toe, has NEVER been softer. That’s brushing through 2 northern winters. I look at as relaxing and part of my self care. It takes 5min. After a few sessions you’re hooked. I do agree, like everything, it’s not for everyone.

I, respectfully, disagree- at least for my skin type. I don’t have any skin issues other than some dryness. Also, dry brushing is not new. It’s been around forever. The benefits for me include, not only lymphatic drainage, but a decrease in cellulite and more energy. That’s me, though.

I'm seeing a lot of people here stating they gave up their dry brush instantly. However, I dont believe dry brushing once in a while can causes these "thickening of the skin." It would require constant, if not daily for this to even occur. Which i dont believe people are dry brushing their skin everyday and if they are, they are doing something wrong. Chronic dry brushing =/= dry brushing once a week. It is a mechanical type of exfoliation rather than chemical. It isn't anymore harsh than having chemicals (acids) exfoliate your skin.

Ummmm essential oils should never be put on your face or anything delicate as they are super concentrated and strong, maybe diluted or with a CARRIER oil (jojoba, Argan etc) but as an esthetician um yeah no. People really need to do their research before just believing the first thing they hear. Essential oils have amazing health benefits but never directly used on the face.

Science is a religion within itself. Some people will believe anything as long as people say it's "backed by science." But science is controlled & funded by billion dollar companies & industries. If there was a free way to anti-age, you would never hear of it because companies cannot profit off of it. So just because something isn't proven by "science", it does not mean it doesn't work. I believe legit testimonials and results matter more.

Dr. Dray is the dermatologist so listen to her. I will agree that dry brushing is not for everyone due to skin issues and most importantly if it is done incorrectly. Let’s be clear: you do not dry brush your skin the way you brush your hair. All that said, dry brushing has COMPLETELY turned MY skin around. My skin is beautiful and baby baby soft. My moisturizer sinks into my skin so much better. Also, the African black sponge along with African black soap will have you looking like royalty 👑. Two each his own, but I will keep a dry brush in my beauty arsenal-ALWAYS.

I was about to start dry brushing, too. A practitioner of Eastern medicine whom I respect gave me a dry brush and said to use it for lymphatic drainage. Maybe there is something to it (as with Gua Shua), but because I have severely dry skin (and skin writing / histamine reaction), I think maybe it depends on the integrity of one's skin. I have no idea. I am so grateful to you, Dr. Dray, for helping me come up with a new skin routine for my 65-year-old skin and for recommending good products for excessively dry skin and scalp that keep me awake from itching. I thought a "natural" cream with lavender and oatmeal would help with my skin, but I was wrong. I am grateful for you every day and will tell friends who ask me about you. I mentioned to my forever friends on Facebook that "a dermatologist on KZbin" had helped me with maskne and painful skin breakage on the bridge of my nose. They recall me as the girl who never had a zit in our school years! Your advice is changing my life for the better in ways I didn't think were possible. My regular derm docs say to live with painful, flaky, crusty dry skin, or have me coat myself with petroleum. For me, that's a laundry problem as well as an ethical one, since I spent my career as a technical editor working on non-petroleum energy solutions.

There are some autoimmune diseases where the body is so full of toxic material, and most of the cases the affected person is not able to do agood cardio workout, that anything that helps the movility of the lymph to help detox is better that none. Besides, it´s not as if you 'rub' vigorously for hours and hours everyday. I think that it´s just a question of deciding what´s the priority at the moment. But it´s a good advice to always be gentle with our skin.

This is so true. I had scabies for nearly 3 months. During this time I did a number on my skin using sulfuric acid and exfoliation to try and get this infestation to leave my body. After I was finally "healed" my skin started to shed. Like my clothing was COVERED in dead skin from my skin trying to get rid of all of the waste product and cadavers left by the mites. I decided to try dry brushing to see if that could help. About a week later I had scaly skin all over and what look like tiny stretch marks all over my belly. It has been months and very slowly is the scaly skin improving from ONE dry brushing session.

Hi Dr. Dray. This question is about sunscreens. I have both mineral and chemical sunscreen that I like I could use either one. I know the chemical sunscreens are not bad for my health, contrary to what the EPA might say. But the two ingredients that were banned in Hawaii are in my chemical sunscreen. Is there really a concern for the coral reef with these chemicals I won't wear them to swim in bodies of water but can they get into the ocean through shower water? From rinsing them off in the shower? Please let me know if you have any insight to this. I wouldn't mind only using my mineral sunscreen even when swimming if the chemical sunscreen is bad for the coral reef

I recently got a face wash which has these ingredients- glycolic acid 2%, salicylic acid 1%, aloe Vera extract 5%, vitamin e acetate 0.5% and gel base. No other ingredients. There is also no fragrance mentioned not can be smelled. I have used it once in 50° weather on normal skin and it is not as drying. Do you think glycolic acid as face wash is a good way to get it in a routine?

I'm a guy and for some reason when I don't exfoliate my skin every once in a while I get very itchy all the sudden when exposed to hot or even just warm temperatures. It kinda seems like my skin is trying to sweat but can't because the pores are clogged and itching helps loosen the pores up to allow the body to sweat as it should. I don't plan on doing this every day, but maybe a few times a week to help prevent the itching I get, seemingly from lack of exfoliation.

👋 Hi Dr Dray! Just want to say I greatly appreciate you sharing your professional opinion/advice with us. You are also a pleasure to watch - I enjoy your sense of humor and how articulate you are. Skimming over comments, I always see viewers saying how much you have helped them. I am now going to join those viewers! I had cystic acne and dry skin, both of which were just being exacerbated by products that (I thought) were supposed to help! For a long time, I dreaded leaving the house and facing people. Since discovering your channel, my skincare routine takes less time, is simplified, much less expensive and most important, effective! And I no longer have problems facing anyone! Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your family! 😊

I dry brushed for about a month every single night. I already had small stretch marks on my arms and after dry brushing, it made my stretch marks worse! They were red and they appeared longer. I was horrified and never did it again. I still use the brush while I'm in the shower to clean my back but I will never use it dry again. Thanks for this vid. I knew I wasn't crazy.

Dr. Dray, I have a 2 part question. I’m very fair. I got a lot of sun exposure a as a child & although I am excellent at protecting my skin now, I have significant sun damage on my chest and arms. I’ve had laser treatment on my face that’s worked wonders. I was considering using the obaji blue peel on my chest and arms. Is this a good idea and is this indicated for the sun spots/freckles that regrettably are on my chest, arms and even sides of my neck. Second question: do you have an opinion about IPL vs. the next-generation combo laser that combats pigment but also does some work to improve texture? I’ve had fraxel and active FX on my face and am interested in attacking the spots on my chest & arms, and my neck to a lesser degree. Also, can you address the efficacy of ultherapy for tightening the sagging skin under the chin? My lay person’s opinion is that a neck lift is required and that this is a waste of $$ and a neck lift is really what is required. Thanks, love you videos!!

When I got bitten by an infected tick spring 2016 (lower leg), the rash itched so much (it was very atypical in me) that even the strongest cortisone creams did nothing for it. My skin thickened locally as well just from scratching; thank goodness it went away eventually, but I had that rash for a year after the bite.
