BC is a great place to build a life and enjoy the natural beauty of our province. But our weather and climate is getting more extreme and unpredictable. Dry conditions with low snow pack continue across much of BC. Right now, the province has the lowest levels of snow pack in more than 50 years, at 37% below average. Unless we get significantly more rain or snow, drought could be a serious issue again this year, and in the year to come.
Understanding the early signs of drought will help us all respond. We're taking strong, early action to make sure everyone is prepared for drought. That includes ensuring we have all the information to make important decisions about water use.
Dr. Joseph Shea is a professor at UNBC and studies snow pack and glaciers.
