Hardie board ("Hardie Trim") or composite is far better for fascias then wood. Obviously you don't want to tear out an entire fascia to replace it with better material... but if you're getting a new roof, especially if the fascia has a decent amount of damage, it's worth looking into replacing a wood fascia with a material like a composite or Hardie board ("hardie trim"). They make it in dimensions for the drip board and the fascia and it's always straight (not bowed, cupped, crooked, or twisted like wood often is/gets). This is an excellent upgrade, especially if you can handle the install yourself. Hardie board is really easy to paint and it lasts forever... you never have to worry about termites or dryrot... I believe it's water proof or near waterproof before you even paint it... any composite material you would want to use is waterproof for sure and you don't have to paint it, you still have to caulk it obviously.

Agreed the composites are much better in so many ways. On all my new houses that is what we put on. You are right the time to do it is when you replace the roof. In this case the seller wasn't in a place to do all those upgrade, just needed to solve the pest report issue.
