The thing is Kabru is good at killing humans, not monsters. That's why he said humans are easy to kill, and they get killed by monsters so often, they don't have monster killing skills or knowledge like our party

The funny detail about the explosion Marcille did is that it was supposed to confuse the Basilisks' heat vision so that she would appear bigger to Basilisk (just like Laios taught her). So it was both a comedy effect, a reference and also practical. Ryoko Kui is DA GOAT

I know that they already finished watching the series but in case they still don’t know, Kabru is supposed to parallel Laios. One’s interested and knows a lot about monster but is confused by human behavior while the other is interested in human behavior but sucks at understanding how monsters move. That is why Kabru, who is good at fighting humans keeps getting bodied by monsters while Laios who is great against monsters would get folded by humans who can trick his naivety.

Part of why Laois collapsed doing magic was that a) He wasn't used to it. If you've never cast a spell before your mana tends to go crazy, giving you mana sickness. Once you cast more spells your body gets more used to regulating the mana as it courses through your body. b) Marcille's Elven magic system uses a lot more mana than the Gnomish magic system. So a simple healing spell for Marcille might cost Laios most of his mana while for her it's just a drop in the bucket. The tradeoff for spending so much mana is that the spells Marcille casts are generally much stronger and more precise when compared to a gnomish caster.

There is an important detail that will apply to the entire series (and the main plot of the saga, keeping spoilers in mind): in episode 02, Laios mentioned the DESIRE to see a cockatrice after they faced the basilisk. That cockatrice did not appear by chance.

Speaking on Kabru and his crew, the reason they might be contantly dying despite being competent is because kabru is really good with undertsanding people. their motivations,their desires etc, but is not very good with understanding monsters where as Laios on the other hand is great when it comes to understanding monsters how they work , how they hunt, how they breed etc but is not very good with understanding people, example the time when they were eating icecream and he randomly said , "maybe Falin getting eaten wasnt so bad" , he really did not undertsnad what was so bad about what he said, just some interesting parallel between them
