"Humans" isn't mistranslated, it's a deliberate choice in terminology. Current consensus in this part of their world is that the difference between "human" and "demi-human" is the number of bones, and elves, dwarves, gnomes, half-foots, and tall-men (closest real-world-human equivalent) all have the same number of bones, so they are all considered "humans."

@@MrOsteost Yes, Shuros' homeland in particular has almost only Tall-men and Ogres, so Tall-men are "humans" and Ogres are "demi-humans." By the bone-# method Ogres are also "human," but far scarcer outside of "The East," and also not yet introduced to anyone only this far in the show.
@sirbig8292

This. Though in this case, while she said humans, I think "humanoids" might actually have been the better choice. As proven multiple times in the story(mainly by Kabru's party so far), demi-humans can be resurrected too. While this isn't explained in the story, I would guess the soul needs a certain level of self-awareness for it to work?
@catmatt777
@catmatt777 3 ай бұрын
@@sirbig8292 At that point we'd be getting more into the fact that the bone-# method is not like a scientific fact of their world, it's more akin to something like phrenology. Short-lived "human" races go along with it because it seems scientific enough and let's more of them be part of the in-group than whatever system they were going by before it, long lived "human" races go along with it because it allows them to keep discriminating against the least desirable of the short lived races while minimizing backlash for it from the others/dissenting voices from within their own races, and short lived "demi-human" races aren't allowed to build the kind of infrastructure that would allow them to push back against these ideas academically.
@sirbig8292
@sirbig8292 3 ай бұрын
@@catmatt777 That's some interesting thoughts. Though what I mean in this instance specifically is that it isn't limited to the races that are considered "human" in this setting, but at the same time it doesn't work on animals either. Since it works on demi-humans, I would guess it is more related to the soul and level of self-awareness a creature has. I wonder if it would work on mermaids too. While mostly played as a joke, they were shown to be the most mentally developed monsters in the series.

My favorite detail about post-resurrection Fallin is how she almost always has her eyes wide open now. Because originally, she had very short-sighted vision and was always squinting. But because of the dragon infusion, her eyesight has become perfect and she doesn’t need to squint anymore.

I was thinking about commenting this, and then yall brought it up in the discussion! A fun (non-spoiler) fact one of the series extras brings up is that dark elves don’t actually exist here! It was actually a misconception between races, where non-elves first met really ‘nice’ elves - and then upon meeting a group of mean/rude elves, reason that these new elves must be ‘dark elves’! Ryoko Kui put SO much thought into the details of this universe 😊

"Dark Elf" isn't a race in Dungeon Meshi, it is a misconception. In Dungeon Meshi there are just 'Elves", Dark Elf is a term races used to use to describe "Elves who were assholes to us" in olden times and became a theoretical race of elves in the zeitgeist of other humans.

I will say that Falin healing Laios's leg like that isn't because she's *different* from being resurrected, but rather that she's just far better at healing magic than Marcille is. I believe the anime mentions this, but the manga (as you can expect) goes more indepth with an extra comic on it lmao. It's actually better for a healed wound to still hurt or itch afterwards, because that's how you know things are 'natural', in a sense. Messing with the perception of pain is leaning towards neurological stuff, and that's dangerous for obvious reasons. Marcille isn't an expert healer, so her heals are rough and notable. Falin in contrast is much better, so she *is* skilled enough to wipe away the pain and also accurately heal things.
@FlubbedPig

In this setting "humans" refers to "the human races" of Elves (ie. Marcille), Dwarfs (ie. Senshi), Gnomes (ie. Tansu), Ogres (haven't met yet), Half-foots (ie. Chilchuck), and Tall-men (ie. Laios). It's also sometimes used colloquially to refer to Tall-men, the short-lived races collectively, and a bunch of other stuff, too. Basically, rather than have terms like "humanoid" or "demi-human" and have them be weirdly centric to a single race, everyone being "humans" helps decentralize what WE would call humans from just being "the norm" in a way that culturally wouldn't make sense in the setting.

According to the official guidebook, in DM world, "humans" includes tall-man (Laios, Kabru, Falin, Shuro, etc), halffoot (Chilchuck), dwarf (Senshi, Namari), elf (Marcille, the Canaries), and gnomes (Tans, Holm). The classification is according to number of bones. Orcs and Kobolds have different number of bones so they are not considered human

@@Protomethau First of all I must thank you for the citation, because it made me go look it up in my own copy of the Adventureres Bible, and now I am sitting here rereading it. And it is an absolute joy to see the amount of work that have gone into the world-building and characters. Apart from that, part of the fun of shipping is that it doesn´t matter whatever it´s canon or not. And in this case there is plenty of material to work with. In the same vein, it is incredibly easy to ship Laois and Marcillle, as they also have a lot of moments between them. Through I was mainly trying to be funny with my statement. Furthermore, I would point out that all of the relationship charts in that book is a very simple summarization of the characters relationships. So it is hardly ironclad evidence (Don´t really want to get into the actual, potentially, ironclad evidence, as that would veer straight into spoiler territory).

@@MrOsteost Laios has such great goofy sibling energy lol Also Proto changed the wording a bit, the chart says they're "friends" but it doesn't limit them to "just friends" and also mentions Marcille hating Shuro for pursuing Falin, (which isn't what I'd call "just friend" behavior). From what I've read, even if the author may not want to commit to any romances in the story herself, she actually does support shipping and has fed it. So imo, there's nothing wrong with seeing and treating it as romantic. It's a valid interpretation that doesn't conflict with anything and enhances the enjoyment for many people.
@MrOsteost

@@Ash_Yu I think that even if you don´t ship them, it is very clear that Falin is one of the, if not the most, important people in Marcilles life. Which makes boiling it down to just "Friends" a pretty big simplification. Which also tracks with pretty much everyone else's relationship chart.

A big fumble of the adaptation, I feel, si not explaining the rules of resurrection until they are being broken. In the manga a few chapters prior we have an extra scene of Namari and the twins were she explains the need of a full intact body and the risks of failure when one is not available. It set the stakes for this and last episode when Falin's skull is found. We are meant to know it is a very bad thing right away to find a skull without any flesh left, and Marcille reveal of knowing forbidden magic to get around limitations is the shock information. In the anime it is all thrown at you at once, so it has less impact.

You're telling me the *mad mage* who has been built up since episode 1, and for the past 5 or so episodes has been being set up as the long-term goal... should join the party and and be friends with everyone? What? How do you even arrive at that? What in the show would give you even the faintest idea that's where things are going? Did you see his entrance? What about that give-off "Friends" vibes?! It honestly feels like sometimes they get an idea in their heads that they like and try to warp reality to conform to said idea. Some of you reading this might think I'm making a big deal over nothing, but think about what they said. "They shouldn't have him be the main antagonist (read: that would be bad), instead he should join the party (read: because I would like that)"- completely ignoring any of the circumstances in the actual story! I like fanfiction as much as the next guy, but this is bordering on "Then Harry and Voldemort kissed" levels of living in your own head.

I don't see the problem. They and the audience at this point did not know that he's the mad mage. When this manga chapter originally came out, nobody expected anything and just speculated random stuffs because they had no idea. A lot of people actually thought he lived in the painting and came out for some reason yet to be explained. Only few suspected he IS the mad mage. And animes and medias do this thing quite often where a character shows up at the very end of an episode cliffhanger looking intimidating and turns out to be friendly in the next episode. It's really not that deep.
