Awesome tutorial and slick video production! I've never seen this kind and skilled drybrushing, amazing work and a greatly needed addition to the available KZbin painting scene. Mega respect!

Amazing video! Do you thin the paints that you use for the colour base?
@MiniQuest649 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes I always thin my paints (except for drybrushing), on big terrain though, I tend to thin them a bit less to get some good coverage =)

I wonder where the stigma, that dry brushing is "For beginners", "Cheap", or "Cheating" comes from. Its rather ridiculous lol, great video, as always!
@MiniQuest642 жыл бұрын
I think that comes from being a really beginner friendly technique (like it was the first thing I learned) and since beginners lack the experience of painting miniatures(they are in fact beginners), it produces a paint job that doesn't look very appealing. I love the technique =) Glad you liked the Video Thanteus, I was quiet torn about it :D

I’ve been painting action figures for over 14 years and I prefer dry brushing to air brushing.
@MiniQuest647 ай бұрын
I've never used an airbrush before, so I can't compare those. What would you say are the advantages of both?

Idk why but whenever I try to dry brush all I get is either absolutely nothing or it globs out despite me rubbing it into the paper towel / foam. Am I using a bad brush? Its a cheap flat head from a discount store, was always told you never use good brushes for DBing.

You're right about not needing to buy expensive brushes, I only use cheap makeup brushes. So, regarding your problem, it sounds like you are maybe not patient enough? The best dry brush layers are barely seen in the first layer and need some time/layers to build up. It really depends on the structure you're painting and the movement you're making. One thing that makes drybrush impossible is a wet brush, but I guess you are aware of that! Pretty difficult to answer this without seeing your mini, mind messaging me on insta? I'm sure we can figure out what went wrong :)

@@MiniQuest64 May need to wait on the insta pic since I don’t have one yet and a lot of my practice models are mothballed. As for the build up that may be the problem, as well as not being 100% sure when a brush is dry enough as I may be dry brushing with a brush that has paint hidden in the recesses that gets out.

You really don't need that much paint, just a little drop of pure paint onto the tip of your brush, and then you work that onto a paper towel or piece of wood (which I prefer) until there are no brush strokes visible anymore. Then you can proceed with linear or rotating movements and not much force onto your miniature, just don't clean your brush in between. You can easily switch paints without cleaning, too. I only clean the brush, once I'm completely done with dry brushing of a chosen color line, like grey tones.

@@MiniQuest64 The single drop tip may be the most useful bit of advice I've gotten for dry brushing, I always dipped the brush in paint like I did with basecoats or the like.

I do a lot of drybrushing and I had some issues before as well. One thing that really helped me was going from wiping on a paper towel to using a dry brush pallette. You can make one by even gluing an empty sprue to some cardboard. It gives you a surface to wipe off excess paint on without completely drying it out. It will remove the chalky look you get with drybrushing and you'll get to actively see how it's catching on surfaces as you're wiping off the excess so you can decide when you have the desired look.
