Had a father but absent a lot. Also he never really liked me much. And I suspect he’s a psychopath because all he ever wanted was to prey on my vulnerabilities. Grew up with a half crazy mother and half crazy girlfriend for most of my young years. Had 2 brothers by my side who were just as lost as myself. Been a mess of a life without ever being able to feel like a real man. I’m 31 now. Slowly catching up maybe. This channel is inspiring to me. Guy really cares about young people and other men’s mental state and strenght. It’s much appriciated.

I spent the better part of 15 years feeling perpetually pissed off after returning home from Iraq. I smoked and drank too much and put more effort into giving up than into building myself back up. Best advice I can give you, I got from Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. To paraphrase: Voluntarily take on as much responsibility as you can handle, and make the effective management of that responsibility your highest priority. Develop a routine which aids you in the proper execution of your duties, watch your diet and get some good physical activity going, and don't introduce too many chemicals or intoxicants into your brain chemistry. Gave my life meaning again. I've developed a career, reconnected with my family and friends, and I'm now considered something of a pillar in my social and work circles. A leader in thought and in deed. I took the positive things I'd learned in the Army and retooled my behavior to conform* with and reflect both the values instilled in me by my time in service, and the wisdom I've gained about life and people in the civilian world. Let your best self shine out through the inner darkness until it casts it all back into its rightful place in your past. Hope that advice helps you put your mind back into balance. Best wishes, respect, and brotherly love to you.

Take the time to write down the steps it took to make you angry, then give a different emotion to the steps( disappointment, fear, remorse, surprise, )...then use these instead of anger it will help you to find your calm brother.

​@@JayZoop I think personal finance is a good example. Debt can be okay but if you let it get out of control you could lose everything. Conflict is also okay but chucking all the fuel you have in a conflict is just gonna cause problems. And just like fires these things could be started by you, others or by the environment, just gotta be sure you can keep it in control. Is this a fire that you can walk away from? One that'll endanger you? A fire you really need to start? etc. It's been a minute since I watched but hope that helps

@@JayZoopif you leave a fire unattended you can't prevent it from turning into a full on inferno. Typically the rule of thumb is that you need to be able to run your hands through the ashes. If you can't do that, then its hot enough to turn into a bigger fire. Lets say you're camping and your firepit is still lit but dying and you decide to go fishing. Then the wind kicks up. An ember blows into a nearby dry bush. The bush catches. More embers spread. Your whole campsite is ablaze and shortly after the surrounding woods. You can't just assume that the fire will die. Because any number of things can cause it to move or get more fuel from another source.

You should talk to your own father, there is no replacement for him out there anywhere. God calls us to honor our parents. Now that doesn't mean honor them only if they are worthy of it, it means honor them in spite of their unworthiness to be honored, honor them *especially* when they are not deserving of it. If your father refuses all your attempts and he is the one who wants to maintain the distance, despite your best efforts to close that distance, then of course you cannot force it, but you can rest calm and assured that you tried to your best to mend your relationship with him. This will be hard to do if you don't consider your father to have been a good one to you, but ultimately it will lead to your growth and to you becoming the best man you can become. Forgive your father, especially because it's hard. Forgive him and you yourself will be set on the right path in this life, you will find that peace we all desperately seek. Forgive those who have wronged you, and this is how you honor your parents. No one is saying love them or do this and that, to honor simply means to show them respect and to look after them/help them in the ways in which you can. Some parents simply do not warrant honor to begin with and attempting to honor parents that have in fact abused such honor over and over can lead to a lot of horrible hurt in the child. Your parents are not some immovable thing that has to be looked after regardless of whatever nightmares they might have put you throught (god knows monsters are parents too so you're being insanely irresponsible with the feelings of those who aren't yet monsters just to adhere to scripture). Obviously be kind and be gentle and listen honestly to your parents and people around you but its absurd to pretend like the answer to every parental situation is just "respect them". There's merit in forgiving and forgetting and moving on but saying you just need to respect any and every parent and always look after them period is sincerely naive to the point of being callous to the horrific realities people actually face.

Yeah I thought that was very neat too That's what we call a "fire break" and he describes it perfectly well the soil is turned up so there's nothing on the bottom of it for the fire to catch on and burn it so it just stops at the firebreak As long as the firebreak is done correctly and they tilled up the soil deep enough as sometimes the fire and the Sparks that come from it can jump a firebreak and continue to blaze onwards

If people sat and thought, a lot of activities out there are showing us lessons which we generally choose to ignore for the sake of the moment. For example, during the Pandemic I spent my time in Mexico, learning to surf. (i was lucky) In my time sitting out on the water, waiting for a wave to try and ride; it occurred to me while on the paddle back out to the break point that it is important not to rush against the current. It's much stronger than you and doing so will only wear yourself out, leaving you fatigued and too tired to catch the real wave. Likewise, when catching a wave it is important to pick your run wisely and not to get upset when it is stolen from you by other people. Just like in real life, it is important not to fight against the flow and struggles of life; just keep pressing forward and you will meet your goal. Pushing too hard will only create more obstacles and tire you out. As well, you should pick your battles wisely and choose what you spend your energy on with intent. Don't get upset from other people who are more successful around you. Watch and learn from them. You will gain more insight and skill than just jumping headlong in competition and fighting over skewed opportunities. Be safe out there!

Another much needed message for the world and especially this country. Thank you Sir! My wife and I were true soul mates. We were made for each other. When she passed, life as I knew it, ended. We were also both pretty strong-willed. Which led, occasionally, to some knock down, drag out raging arguments. But I found that if I just removed myself from the situation, the fire would go out fairly quickly. I would go upstairs and read or work on one of my stories for just 10 or 15 minutes and when I came back down, I was fine, she was fine, the fire was out and we could interact again in a civilized manner, whereas if I had stayed downstairs, the fire might have raged all night and done irreparable damage.

@@godshelp6068 I'm not sure that I have moved on. It's been 3 years and I still miss her every day. I always will. Some days I think I'm not really living, just surviving. The good news is that the unbearable agony gradually subsided. Though I still have occasional moments when I lose it completely for a few minutes, I am now able to enjoy the memories of the times we shared and even laugh about some of them. I think it is important to spend time with others you love if you can. I can't do that easily and have been mostly alone since she passed which has only exacerbated my grief. Be around people who love you. Or just call and talk to someone. It sounds too simple, but it really does help.

This was something that I finally realized earlier this year, and was reinforced by this video. Only reason I'm commenting now is because I've thought about it plenty but haven't been able to properly put words to it yet. But I finally realized that I needed to stop fueling the fire to three very large, very heavy subjects in my life that kept me in a constant state of anger and bitterness. It's true. Parts of my family get upset with me because I don't care what other people have, and I like people who don't care what I have. Another point is that what you do doesn't matter much . Some folks will have your best interests in mind and others won't. There's plenty that let other people do their thinking for them. For them, nothing will change their mind about you. They'l first think dumb things, and then they'll do dumb things. Whatever you do isn't going to make any difference so why fret about it.

"Hurt people, Hurt people." A glorious clip on the wisdom of letting fires flame out. Don't engage. We probably in many ways are very different from one another, I practice zen Buddhism. You practice Christianity. Yet, we are similar in our spirituality. That's a blessing to share. Differences can be strength and beautiful. At least, as I see it. I mainly watch your channel because of horses. I was young, and infant, when I was introduced to horses in the southern Utah deserts and mountains. They are my spirit animal. I so wish I could live on a small farm like I grew up on with my grandparents. Alas, 64, and time is running out. I would hope I could join one of your retreats with each of my adult children. Or myself. It would remind me of the time I set out at age 40, after a divorce, to dream and claim to own my own sailboat and sail her by age 50. I did so when serendipity intervened. I taught women how to sail on the Great Salt Lake. Dream has come and gone. Lessons learned not forgotten. I wanted to say, the reason I started writing, is to share something I heard in my meditation practice that to me has to do with choosing to put fuel on a fire or learn to not engage the embers. The words I heard were, "Emotions are indicators, not dictators". Often my common enemy is my mind. I have lived through many traumas in my life and they still interfere with my life. If I take these words of indicators vs dictators to heart, I can find a more peaceful, calm place from which to observe my emotions, so they don't dictate my responses and feed my fears. As I listen to your analogy of fire, I see the embers from a fired up log split apart in the pit as just indicators of how close I am to allowing the fire of emotions to consume me again, or just watch the embers, the indicators, slowly burn away and out to Ash, and let there be no more flame to burn. So, there ya go. I do wish that you would decrease the amount of smoking because of the risk of cancer. As a retired nurse in a cancer hospital, I saw too many disfigured souls from pipe, cigar and chew tobacco. (I was a former smoker in my teens). I do enjoy the aroma of pipe tobacco burning and thought I could maybe just burn some like incense. Not sure what that would look like. If it would bring pleasure. I am glad you have found pleasure in life and give back to many who need some of your advice/lifestyle to measure their own world with. Now that's a Jesus/Buddhist gig. May you be sage. May you be happy. May you live with ease.

@itsmichaelmai I bet it is :( They program you along with the phone, use those apps enough and it can eat a person alive. They are a great tool, much as a hammer is. But if the hammer actively conditions you to use it "the wrong way," it's only a matter of time before that hammer destroys something you don't want to break :/ I'm sorry we live in a time where we are essentially prescribed and then forced to use these tools :( I managed to avoid the big ones, but some are not really a choice. Good luck getting a bank account without a home address, good luck getting a home address without an email address and phone number, good luck getting those without money, good luck finding employment without virtually all of the above... and before you know it, we forget we are people, not cattle. It's a cruel joke that 1st world countries have played on enough generations to make most of us forget our roots, to become easy to manipulate, and ideally, to be docile. If not docile, then they point our anger (that they instill in us from birth) at anything and anyone else but themselves. And if we don't follow the road they predetermined for us, we are at best outsiders from society (🙋‍♂️ like me), at worse the veil is torn off and we are thrown into smaller pens which we can't leave. At worst, we are all geared and conditioned to hurt others, or ourselves... and then they blame us when it happens :( I'm sorry if I just "spoke down to you", that wasn't my intent, the opposite. I aim to lift up every human I can, at every chance I get. Thank you for your reply, I respect your honesty! Both inward and outward... Much love, friend. I hope you can learn to put the hammer down and use it to build when you pick it up ❤️

One of the best pieces of advice i ever received was : "you don't have to attend every argument that you are invited to." Ppl are lashing out at strangers online for personal reasons you'll never know and a fight isn't going to do anything positive for anyone involved. A waste of time.

Words cannot convey how I needed this when I was a teenager. My trait of going out to make more trouble out of trouble didn't do too much harm in my general social life but it sure did bring a lot of pain into my personal life and messed everything up. I was really really in love later in life multiple times but I just couldn't make things work no matter how I tried. This is such a tragedy not a lot of people would understand. Because you do think and you do want to put out that fire but you're just keep adding and adding to it; you're ready to die trying but the other person don't. They just leave you and the cycle repeats. It's just a horrible ordeal. I was raised by a very good but very emotional mother that cried a lot and was scared of every little thing, and I think that influenced me to a degree. But the most important reason was my pride and my attitude towards God. I was too proud to ask Him long enough for help, I got upset and rejected Him, and my life spiraled in a horrible way. When you're full of pride you think you're the master of fire but in reality you aren't. Weak and foolish men think they can tame fire while strong and wise men know their place. It's as simple as that. You do less and you achieve more. But in order to do that you have to be a healthier person, you need to put out that fire within you first. Even if you see what's "right" (you probably don't), even if you do something out of the best intentions you've got to make sure you're calm and the other person is calm. If you care for them make sure they're calm and feel loved, act gently just like you would with fire because it's dangerous. Gentleness with people is calmness and love.

I wish I would have had you as a male figure in my life growing up, simply to soak up all of your wisdom. My dad kicked the bucket when I was a young child & I had to figure out life on my own. Horses have always been my deepest love & strength. It’s where I’m happiest. They basically taught me everything I needed to know about human behavior by the time I was seven. Well, that & music. When I was a kid being raised by criminals I looked for insight and wisdom wherever I could find it. Some of it stuck and got me through and much if it didn’t make total sense until I entered middle age. What’s amazing to me is wisdom is the same values told or lived in different ways and the key is “let it be”. Of course there are times we need to act or choose or even flee but if you let most things just BE those other times (when action is needed or a choice is to be made) become clear and simpler. You are a gem and have that glint and smile of those who saved my sanity if not my life.

Once again, for a man who is different in his spirituality than I am, different in his politics than I am, different in his societal opinions than I am, we sure seem to see eye to level eye on a great deal of things! I listened to the podcast, as I always do, and the message was one I couldn’t agree more with. If anything, it is our differences that interest me the most! Why? Well, my wife and I will be there for school in eight weeks time, and while my main goal is to soak up as much learning as I can concerning horsemanship and horse care, and wrangling, I can honestly say, I cannot wait to simply sit around a fire and listen to you, talk with you, and hear and discuss our differences openly and not only with respect but with genuine interest and a very open mind. It is from those who are different and have a different view that we can learn the most from. When all we do is surround ourselves with those with whom we agree that we find ourselves in an echo chamber, learning nothing. A discussion should never become a fire. It should be had around a fire.

I went to school, got my degree and all with tons of debt. Graduated 5 years ago and I’m still working in fast food and the girl I was with for 5 years left me because she didnt think I was trying hard enough. I was very close to getting that ring for her after years of saving and I’m glad we didn’t get to that point where she’d divorce me. I try to look at these obstacles as more of opportunities. Life gives you detours and many times those detours are more scenic than taking the interstate. My grandpa went through similar struggles I went through and everything worked out for him and that didn’t happen until he was in his 40’s. Keep your head up, the sun always rises after cold dark nights.

I found this channel sometime ago and I always love the message and I also love to read the comments of guys around my age that are taking to listening to this. I feel like at my age I’ve learned that one thing I think is fundamentally missing in society. At least with men, is we don’t talk with the older generations of men. History shows us older men would pass down wisdom to the young bucks so that we might be better or that we might not make the same mistakes they made. I feel that a lot of men are lost in some regard not having an elder to pass down wisdom. Now I’m not saying every older folk you talk to’s advice will be gospel but. They have lived life far longer than we have and there is always a nugget of wisdom to pass down. Guys at least in their 20’s like me speak with older men. Just talk to them listen to their story that you might find some sort of advice. I know from watching this channel and doing a journey to be a better man I’ve spoken with many men from coast to coast and all walks of life and each although we disagree on some things we don’t burn a fire. We simply talk. And I have found that my knowledge and outlook on life has grown exponentially. I wish you all the best and hope your all blessed.
