My mom would hate this video. She said I was the most "Why" asking kid she ever seen. "why why why why!". I was a curious child. My brain was wide open on thinking. Why, how's it made, how it works, what's it made of?. She had just gotten a new Electrolux vacuum. I think it was $1,200. This was late 70's, and a new car was probably $5,000. Well the salesman said you could paint a car with it. Mom said, "No you can't". The salesman, "Yes ma'am you could". Again, mom said, while looking at me, back to the salesman, back to me, "No! You Can't!" He picked it up and said "No ma'am, you're right, you can't". Too late! I was probably 11, building and painting lawnmowers to sell, and wanting to paint a car. I did at 12. But, one day, I wanted to know, how that vacuum was made so good, you could paint a car. Guess what I did? I took it apart. Mom knew if I was quite, something bad us happening. She opened my bedroom door, saw Electrolux vacuum cleaner parts everywhere. That painting secret must have been hidden well, I couldn't find it. But she looked at the Vacuum, looked at me, back to the vacuum, then back to me. And in the most eerie calm said, "I'm closing this door. I'm coming back in 30 minutes. My vacuum had better work". Nothing else. My mom usually wasn't that calm. I felt the fear of death, literally. I thought parents were allowed to kill children, legally! When she came back, it was together, and it worked for 20 more years. But she would have something to say about this "Why" video. She's about to be 84 in a couple months. Still as fiesty as ever, thou a lil more broken down.

Funny old world, I needed this refresher for myself more than my horses needed it. I needed it for my day job and not my life at home with my family and horses. I'm like you, I'm older working with younger folks. Young bosses now challenge me all the time. Why. I know why and they don't. Sometimes you get lost in knowing why and trying to help others learn why. But sometimes they just don't want to know why. Thanks

Well again i learn something here that helps me in life... example i play music and frequently come in to find my gear moved...so end up dragging a chair across auditorium and now instead of cuss'n under my breathe i can wonder why out loud. And most likely make a difference for my life and someone else's..sure beats the why did I do that afterwords...Thanks for making the hard thing easy.

I absolutely love this video because I think and learn through asking questions, i have pissed people off a lot just because I watch how they work and question why are they doing it the way they are and they never really have a good answer. It’s just how their mentors showed them and they just never questioned it, or tried to learn better ways of doing stuff in life.

I'm a musician. And acustomed to ask 'why' all my life long... ... they don't like me very much on the ranch because i'm always asking 'why' ... Yes, i'm a very uncomfortable one.... 😁 There is not always an answer, but sometimes the old man there has really good ones - when he starts to look in his head for his memories.... and when his daughter comes on with me for them. 😁 Now que will have a clinic with a veterinarian to explain certain issues of horse handling, feeding, training.... 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks for posting this thoughts. They are so true and so important!! 👍👍👍👍

Like the good information. Sometimes when you think you know everything, it makes it hard for you to learn something new. It also makes you hard to get along with. If you find yourself moving from job to job to job, you might ask yourself whether you are being too overbearing which can hurt relationships, especially with your boss.

Yes sir, doing things just because that's how you have always done it, or that's what everyone else does, does not always make it right. I especially find that to be the case with my horse tack. I started with all the gear I could get. I gradually eliminated the back billet, quit riding with my halter under my bridle, went from a full browband to a single ear and lately, I have stopped using a breast collar. I just eliminate what isn't necessary for my horse and my riding.

Started a little slow Dewayne, but you finished strong. I laughed out loud at, “I’m old enough that I just don’t care.” I always shortened the nearside rein of a horse that I knew, or suspected, wouldn’t stand still for me to get on. I didn’t care if he moved around me, I just didn’t want him to move away from me as I was stepping up. I’m not an everyday cigar smoker, in fact, I make it a point to be an occasional smoker, since giving up cigarettes, then chewing tobacco a long time ago. Yesterday was pretty nice for December in Wyoming though, and I had a nice RP Decade with a wee bit of tequila for an afternoon treat. Merry Christmas, Dewayne

Your presentation makes me think of what I think an Equestrian Yogi might say of your philosophy, Dewayne, and that is to "consider Mindfullness but not the point of Neuroses." By "Mindfullness" I mean that we need to have a sense of purpose, a sense of reason, and an understanding of being present in the moment to make sure we are conscious of what we are doing and why we are doing it. ... Namaste Dewayne! 🙂

What you’re saying makes perfect sense to me. I asked myself why should I let my mare turn around and walk out of my 3 horse slant load but not my older 2 horse old style bumper pull? Well the 3 horse slant it’s further off the ground with plenty of clearance to maneuver turn around and come out front 1st safely. The 2 horse bumper pull is lower to the ground and she gets stuck and panics if she tries to turn around in it. (Train wreck waiting to happen) She’s adapted to both now and does fine in either one. I could probably back her out of the taller wider trailer but why? If I’m wrong please tell me. I’m open to suggestions. Horse people always have a reason of their own whether it’s right or wrong. I only feed 1 time a day because my horse doesn’t get worked on a regular basis real hard. Some of my horse buddies tell me I’m cruel because horses are supposed to be fed 2 times a day. The mare looks good. Happy dapples and all. Has free choice hay and good pasture. Really enjoy your videos, advice and logic.

Another great video Dwayne. If you get fired, Georgia is still an option 😅 Edit. I think the exact same way. I tell my help, " either listen or think. Don't do both.". I would prefer that they think. Excellent. Critical thinking is so important in life to grow as a person and be the best we can be with horses and with life in general. God gave us a brain to use. Mandates suck. Had to throw that in. Common sense is a virtue these days. The reward of doing it God's way is by using the brain he gave us. If we ask for wisdom it will be granted. Growth as a person is as a very spiritual experience.

I worked for a janitorial service one time and apparently, I must of had some unusual methods because almost every day for a couple of weeks My boss would asked me why I did something the way I did. After a couple of weeks of this, one day he stoped me mid answer and said, "You always have an answer don't you". Never once did my boss tell me I was wrong and needed to do it differently.

Totally with Dewayne when it comes to asking yourself why you are doing [whatever] with YOUR horse. Excellent advice. But trying to justify going against the owner's feeding instructions instead of discussing it with the owner first has nothing to do with that. I'm even older than Dewayne and I know what it means to feel like you know better at this point in your life. But being an old guy (or old lady in my case) doesn't give you the right to be a disrespectful employee. I also don't think it was his place to challenge the young guy about round penning the horse. He, at least, was following instructions and would prob like to keep his job. If Dewayne had thoughts about that, he should take them to the owner. FWIW, I agree with Dewayne about the feed and the round penning, but don't think he handled either of those situations correctly.

Dwain good evening.Ive been asking why this week myself. I had shoulder surgery in July, I rode my TN walker that is 21/70ish for the first time since surgery, nice and easy here in TN. Everything is going good, get to a pasture and he starts to canter on his own not a problem, but I didn't que him.3 seconds later we crash his chest is on the ground, then mine is in the ground, hurting my other shoulder.Hollywood is ok, me I'm healing shoulder is starting to work again. Conclusion, why? He is out of shape rode a handful of times by a friend's daughter. Ten weeks out since last trim, farrier came the next day. Debating weather to retire to Auburn vet school. I rode him eleven miles earlier in the spring ,no issues. That is the worst crash ever on a horse, the second worst was riding HW bareback and bailed off before a hip replacement needed for 48 years. Another words bad hip all my life replaced two years ago, riding is fun now. He has tripped before with my uncle who has owned him since he was two. He would like h donated to veterinary medicine, your thoughts please sir?

I had a really nice stout foundation bred quarter horse years ago that stumbled a lot. I had a good farrier that kept her trimmed and shod proper, but she still stumbled. It is just as natural as it is for some of us to stumble more than others. I am not sure about the thought behind donating this horse to veterinary medicine, I’m sure I just am not fully understanding the question. But just from what you stated here, I see no reason to do so.
