We work with our red gum for many things. absolutly beautiful heart colors. I basicaly cut a 2 inch section out of the pith area. that's a big failor area. and knots of course. but our trees grow so striaght we get lots and lots of good baords out of it. I have uaed black gum off the property and i'd say it's better for beams /headers extra.. a bit more harder to keep straight if cut thinner. agood luck with that batch..

As a home owner/wood worker I had a sweet gum cut and sawed into boards. Stacked them in my green house to dry. Not enough air circulation and got a heavy crop of mold. If blue stained pine is sold as Denim Pine, what could I call my blue sweet gum? Blue Berry Liquidambar? Grape Gum? I had the same problem with the top few layers. Pretzels. My friend tells me that back in the day they stained it and sold it as walnut furniture.

The mold goes away after processing, but you need bands or weights on top to keep down the warping.

Regarding weight, use a pallet and throw in 5 80lb concrete bags. Let me get rained on. Now you got 400lbs of weight on an easy to lift pallet
